I had opened up my email, anticipating whom my next patient would be when I was greeted with a surprise. "Congratulations Ms. Russell," it read, "After an amazing summer having you among our staff, I am happy to report to you that your internship is now complete." I looked over at my calendar and couldn't believe it; summer was officially over and I was to return back at school in a week. I finished reading the email. "It was a pleasure to have you work for us, and if you ever need to contact me in the future for anything I am always readily available. Sincerely, Mickey Mouse." I typed up and sent in my final report before shutting everything off and heading home for the night.
I returned the next day for what was my last day at the asylum to make sure that I had all of my things. As I packed up my office, I couldn't help but feel a little emotional considering that this was most likely my last time in here. This summer was a once in a lifetime experience, and for all the frustration and discomfort I felt at times, I wouldn't trade those moments for anything else in the world. I even found myself missing my patients a little bit, including the ones who were unbearable to deal with, however that's not to say that I would ever go out of my way to see any of them ever again. I still could not believe how quickly the past two months had gone. I guess time flies when you're having fun.
Once I made sure that all my stuff had been cleared out, I took one last look at my office, remembering all the great and not-so-great moments I had in there, shut off the lights and locked the door. I decided to pay a little visit to Mickey to thank him for this amazing opportunity. "Mickey?" I said as I knocked on his door.
"Come in," he called. I went inside to find him sitting at his desk with his usual grin. "What can I do for you Ms. Russell?"
"I just wanted to say thank you for giving me this amazing opportunity to work here this summer."
"The pleasure was all mine; we enjoyed having you," he said as he approached me. "Like I said, if you ever need anything in the future, do not hesitate to ever contact me, okay?"
"Okay."
"I wish all the luck in the world for you," he said putting his hand out. I accepted the handshake. "Now you take care."
"Thank you," I said as I headed out. With that I made my way to the front desk to give the receptionist my keys and headed out.
As I got in my car, I took one last look at the asylum. It was hard to believe that this big, evil-looking castle was my second home over the summer. Taking a deep breath, I got in my car and without looking back, drove away from the Walt Disney Insane Asylum for the last time.
Author's Note: Yes, I am sad to say that this is in fact the end of the story. Just like with Dr. Russell, it has been a fun, albeit sometimes a little stressful, process and has been a wonderful year and a half of working on this story. But honestly, this story would be nothing if it weren't for all of you who reviewed and helped out with it. So this is a big shout-out to everyone who was involved with its success and popularity, so thank you, for this would be nothing and wouldn't be where it is without you.
