~ Chapter Seventeen ~
~~ All's Well ~~
The end of January was brisk and cold, and a light snow had fallen the night before. The fluffy goodness covered the sidewalks haphazardly. The snow was something between ice and slush, a dangerous combination. The icy wind didn't help, either. Emily hurried her young daughter along, who kept picking up the snow with her purple-gloved hands. She adjusted her other daughter in her arms; she had slipped and fallen on her bottom on the ice and now didn't want to walk. Molly had her face buried in Emily's jacket-covered shoulder, sheltered from the wind.
"C'mon, Kenzie, put down the snow," Emily urged, even though she loved watching Mackenzie dance around in the snow. It was just so wondrous to see her out and about and... alive. "Let's get inside and get warm."
Mackenzie threw the snow she already held in her hands up into the air. "Weeeeee!" she sang, twirling around and laughing when it sprinkled on her polka-dotted coat. She caught up with her mommy and sister, and saw her twin watching her. Kenzie smiled at her, wanting to cheer her up. "Do you wanna build a snowman?" she started to sing from their current favorite movie, Frozen. "It doesn't hafta be a snowman."
Molly smiled, but tried to hide it in Emily's shoulder. They reached their destination, The Brew. Emily pulled the door open with one hand, and ushered Mackenzie in ahead of her. "Oooooo, it's so warm in here," she cooed to the girls.
"Yeah," Kenzie murmured, taking her hat off her head. "We have hot chocolate now?" She looked up at Emily, taking off her gloves.
"Mm-hmm, in a minute," Emily told her, spotting her friends over on the sofa, their usual spot.
Hanna and Aria were already there, talking, and waved her over when they spotted her, too. Liam and Leslie were kneeling on the floor in front of the table. Liam was attempting to explain to Leslie the different types of Pokemon. Leslie was more interested in looking at the pictures on the cards and flipping the pages of his binder. A baby carrier sat at Hanna's feet on the floor, and she and Aria were fawning over Hailey.
"C'mon, girls, let's go over here," Emily said. She tried to put Molly down on her feet, but she wouldn't have it. They walked over to the group.
"Hey, Em," Aria and Hanna greeted, in turn. "Hi, girls."
"Hi," Emily replied back, and the girls mimicked her. She sat down in a chair, setting Molly on her feet. Molly flopped back against her mommy. Emily started helping her take her coat off as Mackenzie took hers off by herself.
"She doesn't look too good," Hanna noted, peering at Molly. "Is she okay?"
Emily smoothed Molly's hair back, glancing down at her then back at her friends. "Molly's just getting over a cold," she explained. Aria and Hanna gave Molly sympathetic looks.
"And she fall on da ice," Mackenzie added, pulling the backpack she brought off her back.
"Ohhh, are you okay Molly?" Aria asked her, kindly. She glanced once at Liam who plopped down beside her on the couch with sigh after Leslie had walked away from him, and pulled out his hand-held DS game. He muttered something about too many girls.
Molly nodded quietly.
Leslie moved up to Mackenzie. "You look like da Fozen pincesss," she commented, pointing to Kenzie's single braid.
"Uh-huh," Kenzie confirmed, twirling around. Leslie's interest broke Molly out of her funk and she took a couple steps over to them, smiling. "I Elsa and Molly is Anna." Molly showed Leslie her two braids.
"Wow," Leslie gawked. "I got Fozen dolls."
"Us, too," Molly replied. She wrapped her arms around Leslie in a hug and spun her around. Leslie giggled.
"We bought coloring books," Mackenzie was saying, pulling three Frozen coloring books and crayons out of her bag. "You wanna color?"
Leslie nodded. The three girls sat down on the floor, leaning on the table, and started coloring. Emily watched them, smilingly, and then turned to her friends. "Spencer's not here yet?" she observed.
"No. She texted just a minute ago saying that she was running a little late," Aria explained, glancing down at her phone. "She said she had good news, though."
"I hope it's about the baby," Emily mused. "I know what it feels like to see your child lie in the hospital and not be able to do anything." She ran her hand down Kenzie's head lovingly. Hanna and Aria nodded in agreement.
Changing the subject to something lighter, Emily said, "Did you guys talk about anything or have you just been fawning over this little girl the whole time?" She leaned down to peer at Hailey in the baby carrier, grinning. "She's so adorable," she murmured. Hailey smiled and cooed as Emily tickled her under her chin.
"I know, I can't stop looking at her sometimes," Hanna smiled, taking the hand Hailey was swinging around. The baby curled her little fingers around her mommy's finger.
"Well, now, you see, how we only got as far as the date," Aria laughed, also gazing down at Hailey.
"Oh, you set a date," Emily repeated, picking her head up.
"Well, not specifically," Aria answered, sheepishly. "But Ezra and I did decide that we'll like to get married in the summer, outside."
"Ahem!" Liam interrupted, without looking up from his game.
Aria glanced at him, then back to her friends, chuckling. "Actually, Liam suggested it, and Ezra and I agreed," she amended. Liam nodded proudly, going back to his game.
"That's a wonderful idea," Hanna agreed, excitedly. "But...what would you do if it rains?"
Aria turned to her appalled. "Hanna, why would you say something like that?" she questioned.
"What, it's a genuine question," Hanna shrugged her shoulders. "It could be a possibility. Wait,...did I just jinx it?" She looked over at Aria with a worried and apologetic expression.
Emily cut in before either one of them could panic further. "Ok, ok, we'll just hope that on whatever day you choose that it won't rain," she reasoned out. "But, on the off chance that it does happen, then we'll just set up a canopy or a tent. Problem solved." She sat back in her seat, smiling satisfactorily at her friends.
Aria considered it, nodding, but Hanna grimaced. "Ew, a tent," she complained. "Won't that ruin the beauty and magic of the day?"
"Okay, I think it's time for some hot chocolate," Aria stated, changing the subject quickly before Hanna could say anything else to jinx her and Ezra's wedding day. She stood up to go to the counter, and that was when Spencer and Tyler came into the cafe. They walked over to the group in good spirits.
"Hey, what's going on?" Aria greeted her, touching her arm. "You said you had good news."
"Yeah, sorry I'm late," Spencer apologized, and then went on. "I'm still so happy right now. Everything is finally turning around." She couldn't keep the smile off her face, and it was contagious; her friends couldn't stop their smiles either.
"What is it?" Hanna prodded, urging her to tell them. The suspense was getting to them.
"Well, Eliza has been making really good progress these last couple of weeks," Spencer explained. "The infection had gone down, she's been gaining weight. We've been able to hold her for a couple minutes at a time during the last couple of days. So, the doctor said-"
Tyler, who had been impatiently bouncing on his toes next to his mommy waiting for her to finish, suddenly blurted out, "Lizzie's coming home!"
They all reacted at once to Tyler's announcement with smiles and congratulatory praises. They gave and received hugs in all of their happiness. The kids felt the excitement coming off their mothers in waves, but it didn't detour them from what they were doing. The girls kept right on coloring and singing the song 'Let It Go', and Tyler leaned over Liam's shoulder, watching him play his game.
After they all settled back down, the kids finally got their hot chocolate. Molly and Mackenzie helped Leslie with her drink, making sure she didn't spill it. They loved being the big girls to someone younger, they always want to help. Aria also brought back a plate of chocolate chip cookies for them. The cookies started an all out boys vs. girls war.
"Boys get the biggest ones!" Liam announced, pulling the plate over to himself. He selected the two biggest cookies for himself and Tyler.
"Nuh-uh!" Kenzie argued, pulling the plate back over before he could take both cookies. "More girls, we git the big ones!"
"No, I'm older!" Liam argued back. He put his hand on the plate to pull it back, but Kenzie kept her hand on it and Molly joined her. The twins stuck their tongues out at the boys. Leslie looked at Molly and Kenzie, then stuck her tongue out at the boys, too.
"Ok, we can divide these up evenly," Emily refereed. "Girls, stop that."
The cookies were divided up evenly, two to each child. "I sitting o'er here," Tyler said, scooting over to the end of the table. Liam followed him, putting up his arm blocking his cookies and drink from the girls. The girls weren't ones to be out beat by the boys. Molly and Mackenzie moved to opposite end of the table from the boys.
"Leslie, o'er here," Molly told the younger girl, who hadn't moved when they did. They each took one of her arms and gently pulled her over to them.
"My cookies!" Leslie squealed, as she was pulled away from her cookies.
"I git 'em," Molly said. She gently slid Leslie's cookies and hot chocolate over to her. Things were calm after that as the girls and boys stayed on their staked sides, without conversing with the opposite sex. Emily, Spencer, Aria, and Hanna settled into a quiet conversation after the kids were done fighting for now. Hanna fed Hailey a bottle on her lap.
Suddenly, a shadow fell over all of them and they glanced up to see blonde hair and blue eyes. "How come no one invited me to this party?" Alison smiled, her hand on her hip.
"Ali," the four of them stammered together.
Emily cleared her throat and tried again. "I guess we're still not quite used to having you back," she explained, weakly. The others nodded helplessly; they hoped Ali wasn't too mad or upset. It definitely took time to get used to having Alison back.
Alison laughed, making them breathe out sighs of relief. "It's fine. I wouldn't have been able to accept anyways," she said. "I have a date." She smiled flirtatiously over her shoulder at a tall, dark haired guy standing in line at the counter. She batted her eyelashes, giggled, and waved at him. He waved back, his gray eyes only focused on her.
"We're glad you're back to your old self," Aria replied, returning to look at her friend. "Who is he?"
"Never mind that," Alison waved the question off. She perched on the arm of the chair Emily was sitting in. "I'm glad I ran into you guys. I wanted to tell you all something."
"What is it?" Spencer asked, leaning forward.
Ali grinned, holding their attention. She ran her gaze across each of one them, before finally saying something. "I'm getting my daughter back," she revealed.
The four of them were stunned silent, slightly confused at what Alison just told them. How was it possible that she was getting her daughter back? Ali had given her up for her own protection nearly seven years ago. She could be adopted already, living with a nice family. Did she know where she was? Or was this just an idea she thought of this morning? All of these questions and more swarmed around the inside of their heads, needing answers. But, clearly, Alison wasn't going to be giving them any answers.
"See you later, my darlings," Ali smiled cheekily. She turned and sashayed off, linking arms with her new beau. She accepted the cup of coffee he handed her, winked over her shoulder toward her friends, and was gone.
Hanna, Aria, Spencer, and Emily were left to stare at one another, puzzling over what just happened. A may be gone, with CeCe and Wilden behind bars, it would seem that the excitement and chaos weren't quite so over yet.
Because when vengeance is wrought, the repercussions must be dealt with.
The End.
A/N: And there it is. I hope you all liked it. For any of you who would like a sequel (and how can not after this), I'll try not to keep you all waiting too long for it. Remember, please review one last time and tell me what you thought. I love hearing from all of you and seeing your reactions. :)
