Complications

"HAH!" Rukako cried out with a mighty swing.

"Again!" shouted Okabe Rintaro with clear displeasure.

"HAH!" cried Rukako with visible effort.

"Listen to me my student, only when you are truly worthy, will the Dark Blade Samidare awaken and allow you to unleash its full powers!" ranted Okabe.

"HAH!" panted Rukako, visibly tiring after a mere dozen swings of the unremarkable and otherwise cheap blade that Okabe had bought when they had first met.

"That is enough for today, my honoured student. I see that your practice has payed off and that you are stronger then you once were," said Okabe magnanimously.

Rukako's face perked up with hope. The Miko clad 'student' of the self proclaimed mad scientist had harboured a hidden crush on Okabe for some time, a crush that Rukako dared not unveil.

"However," stated Okabe, his voice taking on the note of reprimand, "You have much further to go before I can count on you to stand by my side against the vile forces of the organisation! Until then, do your best!"

"Yes Okabe! I will!" beamed Rukako with pleasure as Okabe turned to leave the shrine, "I… I should probably say the words, shouldn't I? El. Psy. Congree!"

Okabe stopped and glanced over his shoulder. Though his face carried the look of displeasure, the twinkle of a smile shined in his eyes.

"Congroo!" he corrected with the underlying affection of a treasured friend.

Rukako watched as Okabe Rintarou strolled off, answering his phone briefly as he rounded the corner away from the shrine.

The Miko looked longingly at the way Okabe had left, then turned and glanced at the blade that was the centre of their indulgent world of make believe, the Dark Blade Samidare.

"I wish…" whispered Rukako softly.

"Wish for what?" asked a diminutive voice.

Rukako jumped at the sudden voice in startled surprise.

"Huh! What?"

"What is it that you wish for?" asked the voice again.

Rukako span around, looking for the source of the voice. All that the Miko could see was a strange white furry creature with long ears flowing out of its… ears, that couldn't possibly-

"I can grant any wish!" exclaimed the creature proudly, "All you have to do is form a contract with me and become a magical girl!"

Though the creature's lips never moved Rukako was both startled and convinced that this creature had to be the source of the voice.

"I… ah… what? A magical girl? A contract?" stumbled Rukako.

The creature bounded up and perched itself on a nearby waist high wall.

"I sense that you have the potential and the latent talent to become a magical girl. The life of a magical girl is fraught with excitement and danger however! Foul demons stalk the land, invisible to all but those that become magical girls! If left unchecked, the malevolent demons will curse and destroy countless innocents! If you make a contract with me, I can grant you any wish! In exchange, all you have to do is fight the demon menace!"

Kyubey was quite proud of himself. He had gathered that this Miko desired the strength to protect others and carried themselves with a sense and desire for justice. That well practised line almost never failed to draw in a new potential recruit with those qualities.

"But… but…" hesitated the Miko as though heavily thinking it over.

"It doesn't matter what kind of wish you make." assured Kyubey, "It can be as large or as small as you desire."

"But… I'm a guy!" exclaimed Rukako as he blushed fiercely.

For the first time in a very, very long time, Kyubey tilted his head in genuine confusion. It should have been a simple contract, easy by all standards.

Things had just become complicated.
