Eddie shook his head. "There's nothing we can do. All we can do is wait." A hint of a smile appeared on my face. "What are you thinking, Patricia Williamson?" He gave me that stupid smile I fell in love with a long time ago.
"Maybe we should catch him in the act."
"I can already tell this is a bad idea."
"I talked to Eddie earlier, and I was right, he did know something." I stared at my hands. "Fabian told him who he was going after next." I looked back up at Lindsey. "You."
"The house and its residents will be under the supervision of our best officers twenty-four seven. Especially you know who." He sighed.
I laughed. "Everyone knows you just like Lindsey because she looks pretty similar to Amber."
"That's not true." Alfie replied quickly. "Lindsey is the coolest girl I've ever met. She's nice, and funny, and she's so easy to talk to, and she's beautiful, and just perfect in every way." He took a deep breath and glanced at me.
"I know." I sighed. "I just didn't realize you did." I trailed off for a second. "But I still don't think you should just..."
Alfie cut me off. "You're wrong."
Jerome kissed me passionately as we made our way to his bed and he unhooked my bra. Before I knew it, we didn't have any clothes on at all.
I gasped for air as he kissed my neck, then my jawline and my ear. "Jerome?" I whispered.
"Hmm?" Jerome muttered, his lips grazing my cheek.
"Do you have..?"
"Yeah."
"Jerome?" He pulled away to look me in the eye. "You know I can't break up with him yet, right? He's on our side for now, and, until we catch-"
"I know." Jerome sighed. wrapping his arms around me. "I don't care. I'm in love with you, Patricia Williamson."
I grinned at him. "I love you, too." I stared at him, and I was sure. I knew. "I just wish that we could-"
He cut me off with a strong kiss to shut me up, and I sank into it easily, running my fingers through his hair. Our bodies pressed together, breaths in sync, minds on the same thing: us.
And in that moment, our love was eternal.
She was about to leave, but Alfie whipped her around. He looked into her blue eyes, wrapping his arms around her waist as he pulled her closer. Lindsey stared at him, holding her breath.
Alfie leaned down and planted a soft kiss on her lips. He pulled back almost as soon as he kissed her. "I'm sorry." Alfie wrinkled his nose. "You just said that you don't feel the same way about me, and I'm still being insensitive, aren't I? Wow, I'm-"
"I never said that," Lindsey cut him off, looking up at him.
"What?" Alfie's eyes widened. "I just assumed that you didn't. I mean, look at me, then look at you, and it's just-"
She laughed at him. "Alfie." Lindsey smiled. "Shut up and kiss me already."
Alfie grinned, not sure if he believed what he was hearing. He planted his lips on Lindsey's and she kissed back. She grabbed his hands, which were handing limply by his sides, and moved them back to her waist. Lindsey grinned in between kisses and draped her arms around Alfie's neck.
Alfie pulled back for a second to look at her. She tilted her head to the side. "What?" Lindsey questioned. She seemed genuinely happy for the first time in a long time.
"Why the sudden change of heart?" He asked, pushing a strand of hair out of Lindsey's face.
She bit her lip. "Because... I think you're right." Lindsey paused. "And there's no way I could stay away from you."
Alfie pulled Lindsey closer, his hands moving down her body as he kissed her passionately. He held her close as she suddenly wrapped her legs around him. Lindsey gasped for breath, wanting to stay with Alfie forever.
But forever could only last so long.
"Lindsey and I are dating."
"Wait, what?" I turned to him, gaping.
"Oh, did I forget to mention that?" Alfie smiled at me. "I asked her, and she said yes." I just looked at him, shocked. He laughed. "Looks like you were wrong, after all."
"Are you okay with that, Lindsey?" I questioned.
Slowly, she nodded.
"Are we sure this is a good idea?" Eddie asked, seeming just as anxious as Lindsey. "What if it doesn't work?"
"It has to," I replied quickly.
Hesitantly, Lindsey attempted to agree. "If the police are going to watch me, it should work."
I smiled. "And then Fabian will finally be behind bars."
"Sorry. I didn't want to wake you, I just..." Lindsey shivered. She wrapped her arms around herself anxiously. "I... I couldn't go to sleep. Do you care if I stay in here? My room is especially eerie today."
He gave her a concerned look. "Yeah, of course."
She slipped into the bed with Alfie. "I was just... Thinking a lot."
"About what?" Alfie turned on his side so he was looking directly at her.
"We're doing it tomorrow." Lindsey gulped. Alfie noticed there were tears running down her face. "Patricia's plan. I can't stop thinking about it." She shook her head.
Alfie took a shallow breath. "You're going to be okay." He promised, looking into her eyes.
Lindsey didn't seem so sure. "What if it doesn't work? What if I just die anyway? What if-?"
Alfie pressed his body against hers, leaning in for a slow, gentle kiss. When he pulled away, he wiped a tear from her cheek.
"Why did you do that?" She breathed out.
"Because, you're going to be fine." Alfie brushed a hair away from her face. He gave her another quick peck on the lips. "Get some sleep."
Lindsey nodded. Alfie turned onto his other side, and Lindsey threw an arm around him, cuddling up against him. For a few minutes, they stayed silent. Then, Lindsey questioned quietly, "Alfie? Are you still awake?"
Alfie tried to keep his voice down as Jerome started to stir. "Yeah."
"I just wanted to let you know, in case it doesn't work..." She paused. "I love you."
Alfie grinned to himself in the darkness, grabbing Lindsey's hand. "I love you, too."
Chapter 57: Last day?
When I woke up, I realized it was the day. The day we would catch Fabian. It would work. It had to.
I quickly found Lindsey and Alfie sitting together. Alfie held Lindsey's hand tightly, glaring at somebody on the other side of the room. When I walked in, I realized it was Fabian.
I hadn't seen him much. Mainly because I'd been avoiding him. Just being near him was nerve wracking.
Chills ran up my spine as he caught me staring at him. "Patricia," Fabian said casually, smiling. No, smirking.
I sat down, clenching my fists under the table. "Fabian," I replied, keeping my eyes locked with his. "You know, I've been thinking a lot lately."
"Oh, really?" He sipped some tea out of a cup. "What about?"
"Having the police watch you all the time must be really hard for you." I faked a grin. I could feel Lindsey's eyes on me. I could only imagine how wide they were. I was sort of taunting a murderer, after all.
Fabian raised an eyebrow. "I think it's been hard for everyone." He glanced over my shoulder. "Don't you agree, Lindsey?"
I turned toward her. Lindsey stiffened, and Alfie's grip on her hand tightened. She opened her mouth, but no words came out.
Fabian drew his attention back to me. "But they don't really make me nervous. I don't have anything to hide." He stood.
"For some reason, I highly doubt that." I crossed my arms.
"Maybe you're right." Slowly, Fabian made his way to me. "I mean, we all have our secrets." His face was suddenly inches from mine. "Like you. I bet we could talk about your secrets for hours." Fabian chuckled, and I drew in a breath. Did that mean he knew? "But that's none of my business." He sighed, patting my shoulder. I quivered at his touch. Fabian grinned. "Have a wonderful day."
He left the room and I looked at Lindsey and Alfie. He held her close to him protectively. She looked like she was about to cry. I closed my eyes in disbelief.
It was possible that Fabian would take her away from him in only a matter of hours.
Later, I met up with Lindsey and Eddie in my room. When Lindsey walked in, my eyes widened. "What the hell are you wearing?" I questioned, looking her up and down.
Lindsey wore a tight pink dress with a black leather jacket over it, paired with matching black heels. Her neatly curled hair would probably cover the scarf she was wearing if it was any longer.
"What?" She shrugged, sitting down. "I at least want to look good if I'm going to die."
"You're not going to die." I sighed. "Are you ready?"
Lindsey bit her lip. "Almost. I, um, just need to make a call real quick, if you don't mind."
Eddie nodded. "Sure. We'll wait for you downstairs."
She gave us a small, insincere smile and we started out the door. Lindsey grabbed my wrist before I could leave. "Don't you think this is too easy?"
"What?" I asked, furrowing my brow.
"You don't feel like this is too obvious?" When she noticed my confused look, she added, "Fabian being the killer, I mean."
I shook her hand off my wrist, then crossed my arms. "What are you trying to suggest?"
Lindsey looked around nervously. "Nothing, it's just... Why would Fabian flat-out tell Eddie that he was murdering people?" She let out a huff. "What if..?" Lindsey trailed off, licking her lips. "What if Fabian's covering for someone?"
"Like who?" I stared at her.
Lindsey ran a hand through her hair, then whispered, "Nina."
I thought about if for a second. It was very possible, but, for some reason I just couldn't imagine Nina killing her best friend. "I still think it's Fabian." I shrugged. "But you have a point." We stood in silence for a few seconds. "I'll let you make your call." I gave her a supportive grin, then got closer. "And... You might want to get rid of this." I pulled the scarf over her head, throwing it on my bed. "Strangling."
I walked out of the room, but, as she dialed a number, I decided to stick around. The door was still open a crack, so I would be able to hear what she was saying.
Lindsey took a deep breath as the phone rang. When it went to voicemail, she started, "Hi, Mere." She paused. "I know you're not going to get this, because your lawyer's une chienne." Lindsey laughed halfheartedly. "But, things are getting worse, and I... I don't know how much time I have left." She let out a shaky breath. "I just... I wanted to tell you before it's too late... I wanted to let you know that, even though you've made mistakes, not matter what happens..." Lindsey paused. "Je t'aime, Mere."
She hung up the phone, and I could tell she was crying. I leaned my head against the door, closing my eyes as I sighed.
This plan had to work. It had to.
Only a few minutes after, I was downstairs with Eddie, Alfie, and Lindsey, getting ready to put the plan into action.
"How many people have you told about this, exactly?" I asked Lindsey.
"I just told Alfie," she replied defensively, crossing her arms. "How about you?"
I gaped at her. "Just you and Eddie, and... Jerome..." I looked at my feet nervously.
Eddie narrowed his eyes at me. "You told Jerome?"
"I just told him there was a plan." I glanced up at him. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw that Alfie was trying hard not to laugh. "I didn't tell him the specifics."
Eddie gave me a strange look, like he knew something was up, but I tried to ignore it. I cleared my throat, looking over at Lindsey and Alfie. "Ready?"
Lindsey, seeming terrified, turned to Alfie. She pressed her lips to his in a long, hard kiss. When she pulled away, they both had tears in their eyes. "Goodbye, Alfie." When she said it, she meant it, as she meant it, as she wasn't sure she was coming back. She was prepared to die. She looked back at me. "I'm ready."
I pulled her into a hug, afraid that the plan wouldn't work, and I really would lose her. "Be careful," I whispered.
"Of course." She pulled back.
Lindsey took a deep breath, taking one last look at the Anubis House, then walked out the door.
Lindsey walked towards the woods by Anubis House, where she was now aware was the place Amber had initially been attacked, her nerves on high. Her whole body shook even though she knew a load of police officers would be following her.
She listened closely for any signs that someone was near. "Blue, two house members just left. One of them is the girl."
Lindsey shivered. Two. That meant the killer was there.
"Follow them," she heard Blue's voice from the other end of the walkie-talkie. The cop had to be pretty close. "I want all of you to follow them, except one to stay and watch the rest of the house."
Lindsey continued walking, trying not to panic. Was it actually going to work?
"Blue, the other one disappeared," the cop said, frantic.
Lindsey nearly stopped in her tracks. But the police were following her, and the killer couldn't do anything with them there.
"What do you mean disappeared!?" Blue yelled.
Suddenly, there was a groan and a thump.
"Riggs?" Blue questioned, and there was no reply. "Riggs, do you copy? Riggs!"
Lindsey's heart sped up. It sounded like someone else had just gotten hit. A series of cries echoed out around her, and she thought she heard people falling to the ground. Lindsey walked faster as she heard Blue desperately calling the names of dozens of officers, with no reply, and more hitting the cold, hard ground.
A twig broke somewhere close behind her, and she started breathing more rapidly. Lindsey heard footsteps gaining on her and broke into a run. She instantaneously regretted wearing heels.
Suddenly, they were right behind her. She wasn't fast enough.
Then, like they had to all the fallen officers, the killer brought a club to the back of Lindsey's head. A scream escaped her lips.
And then all she saw was black.
Author's note: Hey guys! I just wanted to apologize for not updating in so long! Things have been kind of busy around here... My grandmother passed away in April and right after there were finals, birthdays, etc. From now on I will try to post at least every other weeks. Sorry again for going missing for so long.
Also, this story is coming to an end very soon! So start locking in your final guesses on who the killer is (put the name of the person and the final/locked so that I know) and the first person to guess correctly could get something in return! Thanks for reading!
