Chapter 10

Time is interesting. For example, not even fifteen minutes ago, Samantha was laughing and chasing her best friend around her house, like if they were in elementary school without a care in the world.

Now she sat next to said best friend eating dinner. Across from her sat her maybe-boyfriend and next to him sat his brother. Under normal circumstances this wouldn't be an issue, but today...today it was awkward.

Samantha tried her absolute hardest to avoid looking at them which made it obvious to everyone that she was avoiding looking at them. Jen (bless her soul), tried to keep her engaged in conversation and would kick her softly when she was making things uncomfortable. Brynna and Grams kept giving themselves knowing looks, which would have pissed off Samantha if she wasn't slowly unraveling from nerves. Pepper looked uncomfortable sitting next to Samantha, mostly because every time he accidentally bumped her hand Jake and Quinn shot daggers at him. The Ely brothers were even quieter than usual and tension radiated out of them. Wyatt kept looking at everyone with suspicion, trying to figure out what was happening.

All in all, it was a great damn dinner.

"Well who wants dessert!" Grams exclaimed, but before anyone could answer, "Samantha, sweetie, could you please go get the cheesecake out of the fridge, and Jen, honey, could you please go bring dessert plates."

Both girls nodded and headed towards the kitchen.

Samantha could feel the immediate shift in the atmosphere outside of the dining room. The air was lighter and she could breathe again.

Once in the kitchen, Samantha made her way to the fridge. She could feel a set of eyes on her.

Sam took a deep breath.

"Explain." Jen said, arms crossed.

Sam groaned.

"Later. I promise." Samantha responded, giving her friend a pleading look. They stared at each other for a moment, until Jen finally broke eye contact to roll her eyes.

"Fine." She huffed.

Dessert came and went in much similar fashion as dinner. To her credit, Samantha tapped into her acting skills and tried to maintain friendly conversations with Pepper and Brynna, she even attempted to bring in Jake. Jake didn't take the bait and opted at grunting and staring at his dessert plate. Oh well, she tried.

Finally, after what seemed an eternity, Sam and Jen were allowed to retire to Sam's room.

Both girls laid on Sam's bed and took a second to gather themselves.

Jen got up first and stared down at Sam.

"Okay, now explain." Jen said, taking off her boots and making herself comfy on Sam's bed.

Samantha covered her face and took a deep breath.

"Okay fine, but no judgment." She said sounding almost defeated.

"Sam! When have I ever judged you!" She said seriously, but there was laughter in her eyes.

Sam rolled her eyes. "I'm serious!"

"Okay! Okay! Fuck, relax." Jen said and laughing at Samantha's expression at hearing her cuss.

"Darrell is becoming a bad influence on you Kenworthy." Samantha fake-chided.

Jen laughed out loud, "You have no idea." She said mischievously.

Samantha stared at her friend, "Wait!" she exclaimed, "Didn't you come over to tell me something."

"Nu-uh, you first." Jen said folding her arms across her chest. "Explain!"

"Fine." Sam huffed.

Samantha told Jen everything that happened with Jake and Quinn. She tried to gloss over some of the more risque material but no, Jen was not having that. Despite her face burning red, Sam managed to get through it.

"Are you happy!" Sam said when she ended her story.

Jen chuckled.

"Dang Samantha! Aren't you a little player." She joked. Samantha fell into her bed and groaned into her pillow.

"Stop! Please!" She groaned into her pillow. Jen laughed.

"I'm kidding!" Jen said still laughing, "Okay, okay." She calmed. "In all seriousness, how do you feel?"

Samantha thought about it. "I'm not sure." she said finally. "I'm so confused."

"Well that's understandable Sam," Jen sighed, "You have had a crush on Jake for as long as I can remember and everything you all went through, it's a lot. Even without the whole Quinn thing, it's a lot." Jen said simply. "And the way Jake handled it was trash."

Samantha's eyes widened a bit.

"Sorry not sorry" Jen brushed it off, "I stand by what I said. What kind of bs was that, just disappearing on you like that."

"Yea, but that still didn't give me the green light to go and make out with his brother." Sam exclaimed.

"Twice." Jen said simply. Sam stuck her tongue out at her. Jen giggled.

"Look, I'm not sure what you should or shouldn't do, but I do highly suggest you keep your hands and tongue to yourself, or at the very least away from any man with the last name Ely." She said matter-of-factly.

Samantha threw a pillow at her.

"Help me!" Sam exclaimed.

"Okay, I'll give you my opinion but I'm not sure you'll like it." Jen started and waited for Sam to give her the go ahead.

Sam nodded.

"I don't think you and Jake should continue whatever it is that you are doing." She sighed, "At least not right now." Sam let her words sink in.

"As much as I would like to not say this, Jake really cares about you and he made a mistake and I get it it wasn't his intention to hurt you and whatever, but he did and you haven't even been able to really process everything that happened." She gave Sam another second.

"With or without the whole Quinn thing, I think you two need some space."

Sam nodded. Her mind was reeling. What Jen said made sense. She could use some space, not necessarily from Jake, just space in general. She was nearing the end of her senior year and she hadn't even had time to process the Juilliard offer. After the play during winter break, her life kind of went haywire, what with Dana and fake pregnancies and Ely brothers taking up almost all the available space in her mind. They were at the beginning of February and Juilliard was going to want a decision soon. By the end of the month according to the email she received this morning but again had not been able to process what between making out with Jake and Quinn.

"Samantha?" Jen said cautiously.

"Sorry. Just taking it all in." Sam said, shaken from her thoughts.

"Regardless what you do with Jake, I think you should back off Quinn." Jen spoke again after a beat.

"I know." Sam said unconvincingly.

"And you need to talk to both of them." Jen said stretching her back.

"Both!" Sam squeaked.

"Yes. Both." Jen said pointedly, "What you and Quinn did was definitely not talking."

Sam groaned.

"That's two for two that you and Quinn go to talk," Jen put air quotes around the word "talk." Sam ran her hands over her face and took a deep breath, "and end up making out." Jen finished.

"I know! I know!" Sam said exasperated.

"You think you can manage a third conversation without sticking your tongue down his throat." Jen laughed.

"Shut up!" Sam said falling face first in her bed. Jen chuckled softly next to her.

"Okay. My turn." Jen said. Samantha could her excitement bubbling in her voice. She sat up to look at her friend and she was practically beaming.

Sam sat up again and faced her.

"I'm waiting." Sam said.

Jen's face erupted in the biggest smile Samantha had ever seen. Jen was practically shaking from excitement.

It was infectious. Sam laughed, "Jen! Come on!"

Jen's face flushed and she let out a nervous laugh.

"Okay!" She finally said.

"Me and Darrell," she started, breaking out into a fit of giggles.

"You and Darrell what!" Sam exclaimed, Jen's excitement really was engulfing.

"Me and Darrell," she said again, nervous, "We, uhm, we, well"

"Spit it out!" Sam said smacking her best friend's knee.

"Fuck!" Jen exclaimed, "Sorry! I know I'm cursing, it's just, it's well"

"I swear Jennifer, if you don't spit it out I'm going to start fucking cursing as well." Samantha said pointedly.

Jennifer laughed, her nerves subsiding slightly. Sam smiled. It worked.

"Okay." Jen attempted for the third time, "Me and Darrell had sex last night." She said looking at the ceiling.

"WHAT!" Sam shouted.

"Samantha! Jennifer! Keep it down up there!" She heard her Grams voice travelling from downstairs.

"Sorry!" Sam shouted at her.

"Jennifer Kenworthy!" She whispered screamed, "Are you serious!"

Jen's face was beet read but she nodded, smiling at her friend.

"Oh my!" Sam smiled back at her. "Congratulations!" she said laughing. "Wow!"

Jen just sat there, smiling.

Samantha smacked her, "Why didn't you start with that! Forget my boy drama, this was way more important!" She said, "Tell me! And if you spare any detail I'm going to smother you with a pillow."

"Samantha! I can't," Jen started protesting, "I, uhm, it's intimate."

"BS! You made me tell you."

"Yes, but you just made out with them. This is, well this is," Jen started in a normal tone and then dropped to a whisper, "This is sex."

"I do not care." Sam said simply and crossed her arms over her chest.

The two best friends stared at each other.

"Ugh! Fine!" Jen said falling face first into Sam's bed. Jen turned her face to look at Samantha. Sam's eyes gleamed and on her face a devilish smile.

"So," Sam started in a matter-of-fact tone. She leaned into her best friend, "How big was it." She whispered.

"SAMANTHA!" Jen exclaimed, shocked.

Samantha erupted in a fit of laughter.

"This is your punishment for scaring me half to death earlier," Samantha laughed.

Jen sat there, all flustered, glaring at her friend.

Samantha's laughter subsided a bit, but there was still laughter held in her eyes.

"Okay, Jen, I'm waiting." She motioned with her arms towards Jen as a signal for her to continue.

"You are the worst!" Jen said throwing the pillow Sam had thrown at her back. Sam caught it and laughed.

"Okay, well last night, I snuck out of my house to meet him…" Jen began her story and Samantha quieted down to listen intently.

Currently debating whether I should write Jen telling her story or just move on. Let me know what ya'll think.
