Hi boys and girls, it's me! It's been almost six years since I finished INCYD and, apparently, people are still reading, favoriting, and reviewing it. Which is pretty crazy to me. I figured if people are still going to be looking at this (and with the fandom reviving in a month) I might as well pretty it up. I went through and edited the whole thing. Most changes have been slight, misspellings and poor grammar. I did make some semi-major changes to chapters 5 and 11 but the outcome is the same so you don't need to reread those if you don't want to. I also deleted all the A/Ns for my own sanity while editing.
If you're new here, welcome! I hope you enjoy the show. As all the A/Ns are gone, a bit of context: this diverges from the show roughly right before the season 1 finale. Episode 22 is probably the last episode that could logically happen before this story.
If you've come here after getting an alert for a story you finished long ago, there's something for you too. Chapter 26 is a brand-new chapter! Come by and check it out.
They were partners; there was no father-daughter relationship between them. It was strictly business. They both knew that. So, why of all the people did it have to be Oliver Queen? Why not some gaudy rich man from Gotham, like that Wayne guy who was no stranger to adoption? But most importantly, why her mom?
Artemis wrapped her arms around her legs and stared absently at the green wall of her room at the cave. Her attention fixed on anything but what was happening right now. She knew Batman and Green Arrow were discussing her future at that very moment but she couldn't bring herself to care. Past, present, future, it just didn't matter anymore.
Falling back on her bed, she attempted to rest a little but every time she closed her eyes, she could see her mother and their ruined apartment. Oh God, she thought as she sat up, fighting back nausea. She couldn't let her mind wander like this. It'd tear her apart.
Slowly, she ambled over to a small mirror hanging on the wall and dried her eyes. With a deep but shaky breath, she marched over to the door, stepped outside, and desperately hoped the team would leave her be. She noticed her movements were stiff and tried to calm herself a little. Her efforts to walk normally only made the quick trip to the gym seem uncomfortably long.
The specialized gym usually held at least one occupant but today it was completely desolate. Artemis had always loved this place. She couldn't see Aqualad's indoor pool from where she was standing but the scent of salt water reached her nose. There were specialized weights designed to actually challenge Conner, several gymnastic pieces for Robin, and a treadmill made to exhaust Wally- not that it ever worked. There was even a soundproof room installed for M'gann to meditate in. Artemis' time, though, was spent in the back of the gym, at the range.
And that's where Oliver found her.
He stood back for a moment watching as she released arrow after arrow, each of them burrowing into a target. Her deadly accuracy with the weapon almost matched Roy's by now. Each shot deliberate and precise, the kind of grace only came from years of strict training.
"I overheard you and Batman talking," she muttered. Another arrow buried itself in the mark. She realized how dry her voice sounded and tried to make it sound less… pained. "What are you planning to do?"
Green Arrow could hear the malice and fear in his protégé's voice. He knew what it was like to be in this position. No one had ever told him what his future held or if he even had a future. She deserved a choice, at least.
"I'm not planning on doing anything. This is your decision. I assume you don't want to live with your father or sister and you have no other living relatives." The young archer flinched sending an arrow flying into the wall. "Batman offered to take you in if you wanted to stay in Gotham and Red Tornado offered you a permanent home at the cave. The choice is yours really." Ollie pulled his bow off his back, taking his time to string it and notch an arrow. It hit the bulls-eye flawlessly. "Artemis," he added in the most serious voice she'd ever heard him use. After a moment, she met his concerned eyes. "You will always have a place to stay in Star City."
She let out a sigh. "Gotham has always been my home but I don't know what to do. I can't go back there now that my mom…" Her voice trailed off pitifully. She'd never shown this much emotion to anyone and it felt wrong.
"Perhaps we should start with Star City. If you don't like life with Oliver Queen, we can always find a better arrangement."
Artemis knew the best choice was probably going to live with Ollie but she wasn't exactly jumping for joy. Green Arrow was nice, really, but the thought of living somewhere other than her apartment in Gotham just made her grief worse. Things were definitely going to change and all because someone had decided to murder a handicapped woman.
"Fine," she replied, at last, letting loose another arrow. It buried itself in the target next to Ollie's. "But I'm not calling you Dad."
