Craig heard the laughter shortly before the door opened, and an astronaut led Indiana Jones in the apartment by the hand. The little astronaut slipped off his oversized plastic helmet off and set it on the table before he swung his star-covered pillowcase full of candy onto the couch and scrambled up onto the cushion with it.
Craig stepped out of the kitchen and met his husband and son. "Did you have fun?"
Rick chuckled and mussed Neil's blond hair. "Yeah, we got a lotta' candy. Didn't we, buddy?"
Neil looked up at his father and gave a muffled, but enthusiastic agreement through a mouth full of chocolate.
Craig sighed and crossed his arms. "Don't eat too much candy, or you're going to get sick." He turned towards Rick. "Did you take Debbie with you?"
"Oh, yeah, we just took 'er home. She was dressed up as a lil' witch," Rick took hold of the brim of his hat and tossed it onto the table next to Neil's helmet. He ran a hand through his hair. "Iain had ta' come with us, though. And he never let go of 'er hand, even when she went up to th' door."
Craig rolled his eyes and shook his head. "They're much too protective of her."
"Did ya' get any trick'r treaters, Peaches?" Rick grinned and wrapped an arm around Craig's waist. "Ya' weren't scared without someone here ta' protect ya', were ya'?"
Craig scoffed and pushed Rick away lightly with a hand on his chest. "Of course I wasn't scared. A few children came by, but that was it."
Neil continued chomping on candy. "Can I have the candy you didn't give out, Dad?"
Craig pried himself out of Rick's grasp and grabbed the pillowcase full of candy from Neil's side. After peering inside, he raised an eyebrow. "Is this all you got?"
"Weeeeell, he ate a lot of it," Rick shrugged and adjusted the whip that hung off his hip. "But I ate a little too."
Craig glared at his husband, not surprised in the least that he let him eat all that candy. He set the bag on the kitchen counter and moved towards Neil. "I do believe you've had enough adventure and candy for tonight," grasping him under his arms, Craig lifted him with a grunt of effort and wrapped an arm under his legs. "Time for bed."
Neil instinctively wrapped his arms around his dad's neck, and groaned into his shoulder. "Do I have toooo?" he whined.
"Yes," Craig said in a similar, mock-whiny voice. "You've got school tomorrow, and it's already eleven o'clock."
Neil pulled himself away just enough to flash a pleading look at Craig. "But Daddy said we could go outside and look at the stars!"
Rick imitated the expression almost perfectly. "I did promise 'im."
Craig tightened his grip on Neil. "He has school tomorrow, Rick."
"Aw, he can sleep through math," Rick held his hands out, waiting for Craig to hand their son to him. "S'not like he'll ever use that anyway."
Craig gave a harsh sigh and a disapproving frown at his husband. "A half hour, that's it." He gripped him under his arms and handed him to Rick, who effortlessly tossed the giggling boy over his shoulder.
"I think we can see Orion; s'close enough to November, yeah?" Neil cheered and clapped his hands. Rick motioned over his other shoulder for Craig to come along.
Craig folded his arms, but a slight smile tugged at his lips as he followed.
