And here is the final chapter of Walks of Life. Thank you to everyone who has read this story and stuck with it for so long. I probably won't be doing any more Chaotic fics for a while since I have other projects planned. You can check out my profile page to see what's up and coming as I'm being more diligent with keeping people informed. Again thank you so much.
Tom snuck through Maxxor's castle in the middle of the night. He had a backpack slung over one shoulder. He had told Maxxor that he would meet him outside of his study.
After almost getting caught a few times by the guards, Tom reached the study. He tapped on the door.
The door opened and Maxxor let him in.
"Good evening, Tom," Maxxor greeted.
"Hey, Maxxor." Tom quickly shut the door behind him.
"Did you sneak in here?" Maxxor asked.
Tom hummed. "Maybe."
"Tom," Maxxor chastised.
"What? I gotta work on my sneaking to get the good scans," Tom defended. He took his backpack off his shoulder. "Anyway. Fresh from the press."
Tom took out a photo album out of his backpack. Written on the front of the black cover were the words "Cousin Jess and Chad's Wedding" in bold blue lettering.
"Do all human joining ceremonies create these albums?" Maxxor asked.
"Not always," said Tom. "Some just do the photos and video the entire day. And this wedding; there isn't a whole lot traditional with it. Some would call it blasphemous. I know my mom had a thing or two to say about it. So did my aunt, Jess's mother. Don't get me wrong, they're very happy for them, but they wished they did things differently."
"How so?" asked Maxxor, leading Tom over to the desk and cleaning off a spot to lay out the photo album.
"Technically, Jess and Chad were already married. The wedding was just a 'formality' for everyone to celebrate. They went to the courthouse and got married on Jess's lunch break. They didn't tell anyone though. Well, me and Kaz, but we're not to say anything to my family or Chad's."
"I won't tell," Maxxor assured. "So how did Chad and Jess defend their choices to their families?"
Tom pulled a sheepish face. "Chad's family didn't have much to say because they heard what Jess said to our family. And, well, I can't repeat what she said because I will have my mouth washed out with soap."
Tom opened to the first page where there was a picture of the bride and groom. Written in silver was a message from his cousin.
"What did she write?" asked Maxxor.
"Promise not to yell at me?" Tom asked, worried he would get in trouble.
"I promise," said Maxxor.
Even though they were the only ones in the study, Tom stood on tiptoe and whispered what was written.
"Oh," was all Maxxor said.
"It's what she said to her mother when she tried to tell Jess how to manage her wedding," Tom told him.
Maxxor's eyes widened. "She speaks to her mother that way?"
"It was a fun afternoon at Aunt Anna's," Tom answered.
The first section of the photo album was of the venue.
"They decided to have the ceremony at Jess's house," Tom explained. "She and Chad are going to be living there for a little while until they get the new house. It's why they had to do the wedding on a very conservative budget."
Maxxor nodded. He looked the pictures of the decorated picnic tables with their white table clothes. The centerpieces were glass jars with wildflowers with stones in the bottom.
"Kaz and I helped her put the centerpieces together the night before," said Tom.
"That was very kind of you," said Maxxor. "They look very nice."
Tom beamed. "Thanks. There weren't that many people invited. They wanted to keep it small. It was kinda hard since my side of the family is on the large side. They tried to keep it even with the guests, but Chad only wanted to invite a couple of army buddies and his parents and said that Jess could invite who she wanted. So most of the guests were friends and family of Jess."
Turning the page, it showed the bride and groom kissing.
"The wedding was informal," said Tom.
Chad was dressed in a basic black suit. Jess was in a white maxi dress. Her hair was pulled back from her face and she had a little veil pinned in it.
Behind Jess was a petite girl with coppery curls in a gold dress holding a bouquet of wildflowers. Behind Chad was a man in a wheelchair wearing a black suit with a black dog sitting next to him.
"Rooney was best man. Annabelle was maid of honor."
There were more photos of the bride and groom and a few with the different guests. Maxxor stopped at one photo.
"Is the next wedding going to be yours?" he asked with a smirk.
Tom saw what photo Maxxor was looking at. It was of him dancing with Annabelle. "Or it could be Kaz's," he defended, pointing to a photo of Kaz with Cory.
Maxxor chuckled. "So the ceremony went well?"
Tom's smile dropped. "No wedding goes off without a hitch. In this case, it wasn't so much what happened to the bride and groom, but what happened to the best man. Alicia showed up to the wedding uninvited and started screaming at Rooney. You remember I told you about her; they're getting divorced."
"Yes, I remember," said Maxxor. "What a vile human to show up to such an intimate event uninvited and act like that. What did Rooney do?"
"He yelled back at first," replied Tom. "And then Alicia was none-so-gently escorted out by Jess herself. You should have seen it. Literally picked her up and threw her out the front door. I think Dimitri got some video of it. I'll see if I can get a copy to show you."
"I can't imagine what this Rooney is going through," said Maxxor.
Tom nodded. He knew it was rough, seeing as he saw how Rooney was when he was at the wedding. He also saw how bad things had been with Sarah. She had told them a couple weeks ago that her parents were going through a divorce and that was why she had been avoiding them.
Sarah hadn't known how to tell them or how they were going to react when they found out. She thought it was best to keep it to herself. Then she heard Tom talking about Rooney and his divorce and decided it was time to tell them what was happening. She was better now thanks to her friends' support.
"The divorce is almost final," said Tom. "Rooney's not getting much out of it. It's part of the reason Jess and Chad want to hurry up and get a place for themselves. Rooney's going to move in with them. He's not going to have anywhere to go since Alicia's getting the house, so Jess and Chad are getting a different place that has room for a third person and a dog without them all tripping over each other."
"Chad is looking out for his brother," said Maxxor.
Tom frowned. "Chad doesn't have a brother."
Mazzor nodded. "One does not do that for a friend, but for a brother. And Jess has agreed to this entirely?"
"It was her idea actually," said Tom. "She doesn't like Alicia that much and I think part of her wants to show Alicia she's making a huge mistake. Rooney might lose just about everything, but he's not going to be homeless."
The next few photos were of the guests sitting at the luncheon. Tom was seated with his cousins Cory and Dimitri and he didn't look too happy with Dimitri in the picture. The next picture showed a very annoyed Tom with a stripe of cake frosting on his nose and him glaring at Dimitri. The next photo was of Tom, Dimitri, and Jess. Jess was standing behind Dimitri, who had cake all over his face, holding a small cake plate and she had a smug look on her face. Photo Tom looked like he was going to fall out of his chair laughing.
There was also a picture of the wedding cake. It was a layer cake with white and blue frosting.
"As much as a pain and a prankster Dimitri is, he's not half bad in the baking department," Tom told Maxxor. "That cake was certainly better than some of the store bought stuff I've had in the past."
Other photos showed the bride and groom dancing on the patio, the guests dancing, Rooney holding Max's leash when the dog tried to jump up at the buffet table to steal food, and the throwing of the bouquet. The last photo in the album was a group shot of everyone.
"Thank you for showing this to me," said Maxxor. "Tell Chad and Jess that I wish them a long and happy life."
Tom smiled. "I'll pass it onto them."
Maxxor looked at the time. "It's late, Tom. You should get home."
Tom looked at his wristwatch. "Yeah, I didn't know how late it was. I'll see you later, Maxxor."
Tom put the photo album in his bag and 'ported out.
Maxxor settled back down at his desk to get his paperwork done. Before he went back to his paperwork, a memory of his father came to him. He had been young when his father sat him down and told him about how not everyone was the same. People came from all walks of life. Each one had their own strengths and weaknesses. Each was an individual. Some were rich, some were poor, and some were talented, others not. But one thing every person strived for was happiness. Tom's cousins had found theirs. They were not rich and they didn't have a large house or a lot of land, but they were happy together. And that was what truly mattered in life.
Coming back to my question from the previous chapter's author's note, what were some old cartoons that you grew up with that you may not be able to find to watch anymore or are such a pain to find to watch: I will admit that I did go back and find the two seasons of Action Man and watched them. I will say that I liked the first half of season one the best because after that, I think it got a little corny. I also went back and started watching The Magician that ran from 1999-2000. I still had a few memories of that show from it's short time on the FoxBox and I think only a few episodes ran in the US and the rest ran in the UK. I'm not a hundred percent sure about that but I'm pretty sure I would have remembered some of those episodes. The reason why I brought up The Magician other than being nostalgic, was because Macx, InfamousB, and Sapphire1 created series called 2nd Series for The Magician and it is just an amazing collaboration between the three authors - it could be canon, it is that good. So if any of you old fans of the show are interested of if you like those authors' works (I know Macx did something with Jurassic World not to long ago that was amazing) go on over to The Magician section under Cartoons. You may be surprised.
