Hannah slid behind the wheel of Finn's truck and adjusted the seat. Lord, he's tall. As she started to turn the key in the ignition, a thought flashed through her brain. This is what it's like to have family. Not just people that you live with. No, that's not family. But people that you care about. Really care about. And she cared about Blaine.
The engine turned over and she put the truck in drive. As she slowly pulled up to the front of the restaurant, she saw him. He was on his phone and talking animatedly to someone.
Hannah thought to herself that a lesser person would feel the need to step on the gas and run him down. A lesser person. She laughed to herself and put the truck in park near the front door, turning on the hazard lights while she sat there waiting for the boys. No need to get a ticket on top of everything else.
"I don't like this." Finn stood between Kurt and Blaine with his hands on their shoulders. "Dude, what's the story with that guy?"
Kurt looked up at his brother. "Not now, Finn. When we get home, ok?" Kurt looked at his husband and was filled with a mix of compassion and fear. He doesn't like secrets. And he doesn't like when Blaine hurts.
"Let's go to the house, then. I want to talk to Burt about this. And…." Finn tried to make the situation a little bit lighter, "to be honest, I'm still a little hungry." This even brought the trace of a smile to Blaine's face. As they stepped out of the restaurant, Hannah was standing outside of the truck waving over to them.
"Finn, should I leave my car here? Can we all fit in your truck?" She opened the passenger door, not sure who would be getting in.
Finn loved that Hannah planned on coming to the house with them. That she felt comfortable enough in the midst of what was shaping up to be a night of drama to be there with them meant a lot to him. She didn't scare off easily.
"Why don't you drive with Blaine, and I'll take Kurt with me." Kurt was about to say something when Finn interrupted him. "I want to talk to him about something before we get home."
Hannah walked over to Blaine. "I guess you have shotgun." Blaine nodded and walked with her towards her car. It felt funny walking alongside a guy she didn't have to look up at.
"Watch out for him. He gets a bit handsy in cars." Finn shouted across the parking lot, not realizing how many people could hear him.
"He's kind of my brother, Finn. And that's gross."
"Well, he's kind of my brother too…and that never stopped him before."
She looked at Blaine who was walking slowly next to her. "This family is weird. Awesome. But weird."
Blaine nodded his head slightly. That was an understatement.
They were almost to the house when Finn pulled his truck over and put it in park. He turned to Kurt, who was playing with the buckle on his seat belt trying to avoid speaking.
"Ok, buddy. What's the story here?"
Kurt turned in his seat. "I don't know, Finn. Why can't we just have a normal quiet life?"
"You're kidding right? You are two guys still in high school that are married. My mother is married to your father. Blaine is driving in a car with someone that he is related to but could possibly marry in some states. What about any of that screams out normal for you?"
"What it it's an old boyfriend? What if he's…you know…been with Blaine?"
"Well, first of all, if Blaine is to be believed, and he should be, he wasn't really a player. But really, Kurt…that's what you're most worried about here? Blaine looked terrified of this guy. And what you're concerned about is whether they…you know…."
Kurt immediately felt two inches tall. "I know."
"How about that Hannah? I think she's a keeper. Even our family can't scare her off."
"I think she's great. Although I'm not sure why you wanted Blaine to ride back with her. They don't really know each other very well."
"Sometimes we say more to strangers than we do to our own family, Kurt. Maybe she can find out a little bit more than we can."
"But I'm his husband, Finn. He should tell me everything. He should know I would never judge anything that's happened in his past."
Finn tried hard not to roll his eyes at his brother. "How can you say that with a straight face to me? When we get to the house I want you walking a few feet in front of me so that the lighting bolt doesn't graze me when it hits you."
"I don't judge him, Finn. I just get jealous." He thought for a moment. "Ok, I get jealous a lot. But not without reason."
"This ought to be good. What reason, Kurt? What reason do you have to be jealous? You have someone that is completely devoted to you. Give me one reason why you should be jealous."
Kurt let out a sigh and fell back into the seat. "Come on, Finn. Look at him."
Finn put his hand on his brother's shoulder. "And look at you."
"I have mirrors, Finn. I know that I have a specific look that…"
"That what? I'm a little confused here, buddy. Is it Blaine you're worried about, or yourself? And in the big picture, even if this guy was someone that Blaine was involved with somehow, in that way…did he look happy to see him? Did he seem welcoming? Kurt, you really need to start thinking in terms of what is going on now in your lives and not what's happened in the past. I mean, if that were the case, do you think that Blaine would be comfortable with you and I ever being alone together? Do you think he says to himself "Oh, well, my husband had a thing for Finn so I don't think I can trust him because those old feelings may flare up? No. He doesn't. Because he trusts you. So let's focus, ok?"
"Sometimes you're pretty wise, Finn Hudson."
He put the car back into drive and pulled out onto the street. "And sometimes I'm just really hungry. Let's get to the house before I'm too weak to drive."
"I can see that you're the chatty one of the group."
Blaine looked over at Hannah. She stared straight ahead but could sense him looking at her.
"Don't stare, Blaine. It's not polite."
"Sorry. But I don't know why I couldn't go with Kurt." He picked at his fingernails nervously. "I don't want him upset with me."
"Did you sleep with him?" Hannah turned to look at Blaine, and their eyes met. She noticed his were filled with anger.
"I'm sorry? What?" This is what everyone is going to think. This is what Kurt is going to think.
"Did…you…sleep…with…him? It's a pretty simple question, Blaine."
"It's a pretty rude question, Hannah." He didn't like the way the conversation was going. "And it really isn't any of your concern."
"See, that's where you're wrong. I was having a nice dinner with my pseudo brother, his husband and someone that I am maybe dating. It was interrupted. It ruined my dinner. I didn't get any shrimp. So yes, Blaine... it is my concern."
"I don't want to talk about this."
"Well, here's the deal. Once we get to the house, it's all that we are going to talk about. So if you have anything you want to get off your chest now is probably the time to do it. I'm not going to judge you, Blaine. You think I've gone through life making nothing but good choices?"
"Finn is a really good guy." Blaine tried to offer a half smile.
"Yes he is. And stop trying to divert to another subject. Did you have a relationship with this guy? And if you did, might I add that your taste has definitely improved. I mean, Kurt is like caviar. This other guy? I'd say no higher than beer nuts." She turned to look at Blaine, who shook his head.
"I wasn't with that guy."
"Does "that guy" have a name?" Hannah realized they were almost to the house and hoped that Finn and Kurt were already there when they arrived.
"His name is Michael Barba. We went to school together."
"He went to Dalton? I'm hoping he cleans up better than he looked today."
"No. My other school. Before Dalton. Before…Kurt." His voice cracked a bit as he said this. It seemed in his life things were always either before or after Kurt.
"Ok, I'm sure that you aren't going to like this, but I need to ask. What is it about Kurt that caught your eye?"
"Hannah, come on. This isn't about Kurt or my feelings for him."
"Just tell me. Tell me about the first moment that you laid eyes on Kurt Hummel. Tell me about what it was that made you think, hey…he's the one"
Blaine thought for a moment about the first time he saw Kurt. He was…he is…the most beautiful human he had ever seen. Not conventionally…but every part of him was put together to create this perfect puzzle that never failed to take his breath away.
"It's the way he moves. The way he looks at me." Blaine felt a blush creeping across his
cheeks. "It's the sound of his voice when he whispers in my ear. The sound of his voice when he says my name. What he says when he says nothing but looks at me across the room." He stopped talking. "I just…love him."
"And this other guy?"
"I told you. There is no other guy." Blaine was getting angry with Hannah and his body language spoke volumes.
"And that's my point, Blaine. The way that you talk about Kurt…it's obviously that there is no one else… if there ever was anyone else. You and I are pretty much strangers, really. But even I can tell that every part of you belongs to your husband. And if an objective outsider can see that, why do you think that Kurt doesn't see that?"
Blaine nodded. "Yeah."
"Great comeback. We're here." She turned the corner and pulled up to the house.
"Hey Burt? Mom?" Finn hollered out as soon as he opened the front door. Kurt walked in behind him, letting the screen door slam shut. Blaine and Hannah walked in a few moments later.
"In here, Finn. Your mother is downstairs. I thought you guys were going out to dinner?"
Kurt sat down hard on the couch. "Something came up. Or should I say someone."
"Am I missing something here?" Burt's eyes followed Blaine, who made his way over to sit next to Kurt. "What happened?"
Blaine spoke up before anyone else could. "It was my fault. Someone that I…someone that I knew came over to the table. It just sort of spoiled the mood."
"Is anyone buying what he's selling? Because I'm not.". Hannah tried to get Blaine to talk to her in the car. He had his chance.
Carol walked up the stairs from the basement to see four frowning faces and a very confused looking husband. "Who died?"
"Blaine? What's wrong, son?" Burt felt the tension between Kurt and Blaine and knew that this was more than someone interrupting a meal.
Hannah looked around waiting. "Oh for heaven's sake. So some Neanderthal walks up to the table and starts giving Blaine a hard time. I'm happy to report that Kurt and Finn stepped up."
"A hard time about what, honey? And how do you know this guy?" Carol sat on the corner of the chair where Burt was sitting, leaning against his arm.
Finn walked over to the couch and squeezed in next to Kurt. Carol motioned over to Hannah, hoping that Finn would get back up and offer her his seat. Nothing.
"Finn…perhaps Hannah would like to sit down?"
"Oh, right. Sorry. Blaine…scoot over, man." Blaine looked at the small space left on the couch and realized that four people were just not going to fit there. He got up and walked to the kitchen, grabbing one of the chairs and dragging it back to the living room.
"You're a gentleman, you." Hannah looked at Finn. "You…you're another story all together." She looked at Carol. "Sorry. No offense"
Carol smiled at her. "I've been his mother for a long time now. None taken."
"So who is he, Blaine?" Kurt blurted it out a bit harsher than he wanted to.
"It's a guy I went to school with before Dalton. His family is…was…friends of my family. Of my mother, mainly." Blaine's voice began cracking, and Kurt put his hand on his knee. "I don't want to talk about this. It's ok. I was just surprised to see him around here, that's all"
"Oh my God. He's your father!" As soon as it rolled out of his mouth, Finn tried to reel it back in. No dice.
"And your mother says you don't need a math tutor. I'm assuming this guy is around the same age as you, Blaine? So what, Finn…did he father a child while he himself was an embryo? What is wrong with you?"
"Sometimes things just slip out. But anyway…so your Mom hooked up with him? Dude, that's gross. And I'm pretty sure illegal."
"That woman is a piece of work. She's like a tornado, ripping through things and tearing them to shreds." Hannah tried to hold her tongue, but couldn't. "She hurt David, she hurt me, she hurt Blaine. She's still hurting Blaine. The only redeeming thing about this woman is that she teaches people the type of person not to be." Everyone was looking at her. "Too much?"
Carol smiled. "No, honey. Sometimes the truth hurts. And that was a whole lot of truth in one shot."
Kurt put his head on Blaine's shoulder, but Blaine inched away. "I'm sorry, Kurt."
"For what?" Blaine never pulled away from him, so he was nervous about what Blaine was going to say. What is he apologizing for?
"I'm sorry that you always think the worst. I'm sorry that someone that hurt me in my past hurts you. I'm sorry that you can't imagine something happening that doesn't involve you. I'm…"
Finn and Burt tried to speak at the same time.
"He didn't say anything, dude. He's just worried." Finn has rarely heard a cross word from Blaine, especially directed towards Kurt. He didn't really know what to make of it.
"Didn't he, Finn? Tell me, Kurt. What was the very first thing that popped into that beautiful head of yours? Huh? You wondered if I had slept with this guy. You didn't have to say it. I saw it on your face. That look of disappointment. It's crippling. Do you know that? That Kurt Hummel look of disappointment is the worst thing that you can level at someone."
Kurt felt as if he had been stung by a slap to the face. "I'm worried about you. Not me. Not us." He thought back to the conversation that he had with Finn in the truck. Blaine was dead on in his assessment of Kurt's reaction. He needed to seriously work on his body language.
"Then tell me this, Kurt. What if I told you that he and I met in middle school, and he was my first crush? What if I told you that every moment of my middle school life was consumed by my feelings for him?" Kurt shifted on the couch, feeling uncomfortable not only with the words, but the tone behind them.
Burt looked at Blaine and Kurt. Sometimes…times like these…he realized just how young they are. Old enough to be married, yes. But not old enough to have life experience to get them through moments like this.
"What if I told you, Kurt, that I wanted him to be my first back then?"
Finn spoke up "It's ok, Blaine. I mean, remember, Kurt liked me before you came along."
Hannah shot him a look. "Not helping, Einstein."
Blaine looked across to Burt. "I need to call my dad."
Kurt took his husband's hand in his. He felt Blaine squeeze tightly. "I'll call him." Kurt started to stand and Blaine pulled him back down next to him.
"Burt, will you please call my dad. See if he can come."
Burt stood up and moved towards his phone. "What should I tell him, son?"
Blaine thought for a moment, taking a deep breath. "Tell him that what he promised wouldn't happen…has happened. Tell him that Michael Barba is in town."
Carol walked with Burt and they took the phone into the kitchen. After a quick call, they came back to the living room. "He's on his way."
Hannah looked around the room and realized that perhaps she was out of place there. "Listen, guys...I'm going to head out. This sounds really deep and I…"
"No." Blaine looked at her, sadness in his eyes. "Stay. You're family. And you need to know."
Kurt looked at his love, and asked the question that they all had.
"Blaine…what did he do to you?"
Almost too quiet for them to hear, Blaine found the strength to say two words.
"He watched."
