So, I got this idea watching the Safe and Sound music video. It's so good! It's simple, but haunting.
Disclaimer: I don't own Safe and Sound or the Hunger Games
Melinda had always learned about the Hunger Games in school. She learned about the girl on fire who helps start the rebellion with berries. The boy she would later fall in love with who gave her bread and the districts. Melinda had always wanted to see one of the districts, but never thought she'd get to. That's where she was wrong.
Melinda had been out for her usual walk when she got to part of the woods she'd never seen. She started to make her way through the barren and dead trees with leaves swallowing the ground she walked on. That's when she came across a huge rock in the empty field. She didn't recognize it until she sat down on the rock, thinking it was big enough.
She let out a sharp breath. It was the rock Katniss Everdeen and her friend Gale would sit on when they would go hunting together. That means she was near district twelve.
On her way through the meadow she found two graves. One read,
"Katniss Everdeen. The girl on fire, who will always burn." The other grave read,
"Petta Melark. The boy with bread and so much more."
Melinda took a step backwards. She had found the grave site of the two most important rebels in history. She got closer the stone and ran her hand over the cold stone. She climbed up on the grave of the girl on fire and sat. She brought her knees to her chest, taking in the devastation of a once strong district. After a sitting there Melinda hopped down and continued to make her way through the woods.
She found a clump of dead baby's breath along the way and collected it, hugging it to her chest. She found an old dirt road that was probably part of the district road system. She walked along the hard ground below her looking at the world around her. There weren't any buildings or huts around her except for the occasional stone ruins.
She came across a small has that had been charred. She walked up the front steps of the yellowing house and into the front room where she saw a burnt rocking chair knocked over. She walked into the bed room with the open door to see the mattress still intact. She walked to the bed side table where one thing stood out beyond the rest of the burnt collection. The Mockingjay pin. None other than the Mockingjay's herself. Melinda the burnt piece of metal in her hands, completely awe struck. She had seen the pictures and heard about it, but she'd never thought she'd touch it.
She sat down on the bed, the pin still in her hand and started to hum. She hummed Rue's lullaby, the hanging tree and the four notes that were the rebel's anthem. She stood up from the bed and made her way out of the house.
As she walked back to her district, she passed the grave site she stopped. She walked to Katniss's grave and laid the pin on top of it.
"The girl on fire will always burn on," she whispered.
The wind blew around her, picking up leaves on the way. She smiled to herself.
Melinda got home just in time for dinner, but didn't tell anyone what'd she had found. It was kept secret for a reason and she wasn't going to be the one to change that.
I hope you guys liked this. It was fun to write.
