Title: Red and Yellow
Words: 376
Kurt forgets the flowers.
Blaine thinks it's weird. He remembers hearing Kurt call the florist the night before, whispered from behind the bathroom door. His husband had been trying to hide it from him, but Blaine couldn't help but overhear.
"I'll pick them up tomorrow at eight," he'd heard Kurt say, and had been elated, knowing immediately what color the roses would be: red and yellow, just like always.
Eight passes though, and his boyfriend remains in the home. Blaine can hear him cooking breakfast.
It's not until they're eating that Kurt's hand flies up to his forehead.
"Flowers!" he exclaims. "I forgot the flowers!" and Blaine chuckles.
"It's okay, dear," he reassures, but Kurt is already grabbing his coat and running out the door.
Blaine laughs at Kurt's apologies, and reminds his boyfriend of the things he's forgotten in the past week or so (his keys, his wallet) but the smile slides off his face when he sees the roses.
They're white.
The next year, he forgets the holiday altogether.
Blaine wakes Kurt up with a kiss to each eyelid and a warm smile.
"Do you know who I am?" he asks cautiously, just as he always does, and Kurt's sleepy smile and nod lessens the knot in his stomach.
"Do you know what today is?" he asks, hopeful, but not surprised when his husband shakes his head.
"It's Valentine's Day, dear," he announces, and the smile that lights up Kurt's face when he pulls out the roses makes the knot shrink even less.
That doesn't happen often, these days.
The third year, the house is empty.
Blaine packs up all the boxes, making it easier for when their friends and family to clear out.
He visits the florist. They're busy today, but they know Blaine well from the past two months, and the lady at the counter hands him a bouquet of yellow and red roses free of charge.
Blaine empties his wallet onto the counter anyway.
The graveyard is mostly empty today, just a few elderly people visiting spouses long dead. Blaine feels no sadness. They'll join their loved ones soon.
Just not as soon as he'll see Kurt.
The pills rattle in his pocket as he kneels beside the headstone.
Not bad for less than thirty minutes, I don't think.
