A New Start
Please be kind this is my fist fan fic. No copyright intended all characters belong to Suzanne Collins. :)
The last thing Peeta remembers is the look in Katniss' eyes and a new pain in his leg as he ripped the tourniquet from his leg. She would win even though it meant the end of himself. He wouldn't, couldn't, live in a world without Katniss Everdeen, The Girl on Fire and the love of his life. Peeta could feel his life slowly, slipping away and he welcomed the darkness.
Then the darkness was pouring away and a bright light replaced it. There was a strong smell of bleach in the air rather than the familiar smell of the forest he had grown used to during the games. Peeta sat up sharply, but soon regretted it as a wave of dizziness hit him. He felt a soft hand upon his shoulder. Looking up he saw a nurse. She had a kind, sympathetic look on her face and he began to worry.
Did Katniss make it out? Is she badly hurt? What's going to happen now? These were the type of questions running through his head, not about himself or his own fate but of those of the girl he loves.
His thoughts were interrupted by someone entering the room. Peeta thought it would be Haymitch, a gamekeeper or even President Snow, but what surprised him was that the person entering the room was his stylist, Portia. As she strode across the room to embrace him Peeta tried to do the same but when he tried to get out of bed something was wrong. He couldn't feel his leg. As he pulled back the thin hospital sheet he let out a gasp. His leg was gone. He still had a look of shock on his face as Portia held him close and tried to tell him everything will be alright but he never lost the look on his face until she told him that Katniss was doing well. After that he just sat smiling while Portia told him about everything he missed.
Their strange reunion was interrupted when a doctor entered the room, "ah Mr Mellark, you're awake and just in time for your surprise."
Peeta just looked at him with his head cocked to the side. The doctor, upon realising his confusion, gestured to the far wall where stood a prosthetic leg and a silver cane. Peeta just smiled. Everything was going to be okay. There was going to be a new start.
