Hey friends, I'm still working on my new series, 'Being Human' but I was inspired by seeing adorable chubby children at work and decided to write a little prompt to give me some life!
warning: there's so much fluff you might become suffocated.

sorrynotsorry

Hiei had been having a lot of internal conversations with himself as of late. Mostly comparing his life in its current state to that of his former life, seven years ago.

If someone would have asked him seven years ago if he would fall in love, especially in love with a human girl (mostly human), he would have drawn his sword and called that man a fool.

Now, if that person had pressed further and asked if he would call her his mate, and have a child with her, and live in the human world with her, well that person would be dead before he could finish the question.

But, all of which were true. He did have a human for a mate. They did have a child together and they did reside in the human world. His brows furrowed as he drew deeper into his thoughts. What would the Hiei of seven years ago say to the Hiei now? Would he even recognize himself.

He shook his head to clear his thoughts. It was a fruitless question. Besides, he had more important things to address.

Hinari.

Though he was worlds apart, he could still watch her. Dendera may has sliced it open years ago, but had been training vigorously to restore its strength; so much so it had surpassed the power it had before it was cut. He could now see for thousands of miles and sense things he could have never picked up before. The Jagan had powers that even those who were born to it didn't understand, and there was still much to be revealed. If he had this understanding and power in his former years he would be an unstoppable menace, now he only flexed his powers to be an overprotective parent.

From the Jagan Hiei watched his young daughter roll around in the tall grass outside of their home. Her smile filled her face while she giggled louder at the grass that was tickling her legs and arms. A breeze swept through the grass, causing Hinari to jump to her feet and dance around in a circle. Eventually her small legs became tangled and she fell forward onto her stomach. Hiei's stomach began to lurch as he watched Hinari's lip begin to quiver, but all was quelled as Ruri came swiftly to her side, pinching her cheeks and patting invisible dirt off her back. Once again, a large smile filled Hinari's face and she continued to play in the yard.

"There's a word for people like you," Mukuro's smooth voice called. She and Hiei were seated across from each other, tucked away in the main chamber of her roaming compound. "Suffocating."

The Jagan began to pulse slightly before slowly closing. Hiei narrowed his red eyes at Mukuro before snarling out a "Hn."

"You're going to drive her away from you if you keep hovering over he while she grows up, you know."

The snarl turned into a slight smile, "It's that obvious?"

Mukuro relaxed in her chair, "It's not like you to look out the window like a love struck fool when spying on my recruits." She smiled as Hiei's face began to blush slightly, "How is she?"

"Perfect." Hiei responded shortly. He was definitely becoming one of 'those parents' as Ruri had warned him months ago.

"And her gymnastics?" The lord added. Hiei stared at her causing Mukuro to continue, "Your mate has been keeping me well informed about my heir."

"She's not your heir." Hiei corrected her swiftly, "You need to find a new hobby."

Mukuro stretched her legs while she stood upright, "For once in my nearly 500 years of existence there is a overwhelming calm energy that has swept across Makai. I've taking quite a delight in informing myself about Hinari and the other children. In fact," She walked over to a large chest on the other side of the room. Opening the oak cabinets she pulled out a small rectangular box and tossed it into Hiei's unsuspecting hands, "Give this to Kazue...oh don't tell me you forgot. Your nephew has his ceremony tonight."

It dawned on him. The ceremony. The weird, human behavior of sticking your child in a complex study like martial arts but giving them high praise and awards for just showing up to practice or throwing a lousy kick. Though it was obnoxious, embarrassing, and a three hour pain in the ass, Kazue begged him to be there, and he promised he would be.

"Shit."

Mukuro stared at the sun, "If you hurry now you'll get there in time." She stretched her hand outwards before Hiei could hastily jump out the window. Gingerly she leaned down to place a delicate kiss on the side of his forehead, "I'm quite proud of you, by the way."

Hiei bristled at her bizarre touch and overly affectionate behavior. Turning his head he stared into Mukuro's eyes. "You're becoming too sensitive."

Mukuro punched him in the shoulder. To her it was to be playful, but Hiei could feel a bruise forming, "...Tch! I take it back. You're still the lazy, hot headed-"

Before she could finish her rant Hiei had disappeared out the window leaving Mukuro with an annoyed but sentimental look on her face.

O.

With the barriers being down it wasn't that hard for Hiei to travel back to the Human World, luckily Genkai's temple was quite close to a loophole between worlds, and it only was a few more moments until he was home.

Home.

It was odd for him to think of the human world as his home. Hiei had always referred to the Makai as his home and the Human World was nothing more than a useless place. But now, in the thickness of the forests he had a home. He had two homes. A home that was forever saved for him in the Makai should he wish to be there; there would always be meaningless work and liaison business to be done. And he had here, his place in The Human World. He had a mate, and a child. All of which were dependent on him, and quite eager to his arrival.

"Daddy!"

Hiei watched as his daughter stumble to her feet and began to run/waddle over towards him. Her large, amber eyes carried all of the love in the world while her arms stretched forward, eager to be picked up. Hiei allowed her to tackle him, his hands grabbing at her waist to pull her up into a tight hug. Hinari let out a happy squeal while she buried herself into his shoulder; her legs swinging happily for added measure.

Hinari loosened her grip from her father's neck to place her hands on his cheeks, "welcome home, daddy." she murmured.

Hiei never understood emotions, nor did he ever care to put a pulse on his own. But, every time he would hold his daughter securely in his arms he would always become overwhelmed with furry of emotions. His chest would tighten, blood would rush faster through his body, even his cheeks would swell slightly and his eyes would grow wider. Kurama had once told him it was called 'unconditional love' but Hiei rubbed that off as 'trivial human nonsense'. Whatever it was, it was the best, most overwhelming feeling he had ever felt.

Hinari had grown from the chubby infant to a rambunctious toddler rather quickly. She was at the height of Hiei thigh (which Hiei was not pleased about). Her wavy black hair was cut short right below her ears but were wild and loose all over her face. Her smile almost took half up half her face and like Hiei had stated, she was perfect.

Though Hinari shared no physical similarities with Ruri and Hiei, her personality was almost split evenly between the two. However it was mostly their friends that would argue where Hinari got each piece her personality from. Yusuke believed her kindness came from Ruri, but Kurama was just as adamant that Hinari's overly observant behavior and gentleness came from Hiei. Temper tantrums though, 100% from Hiei. There was no argument on that topic.

Luckily Hinari wasn't anywhere near a temper tantrum today. If anything she was overjoyed with her father. The father in question walked walked with Hinari towards their home. The young toddler was babbling on about what he had missed in the past three days. Though most of her words were quite incoherent he did manage to comprehend that she climbed a tree, dressed herself and saw an alligator. Though Hiei was positive she had imagined the last part.

"An alligator?" He questioned.

Hinari nodded violently. "A big one."
"You're sure it wasn't a lizard?"
Her black hair tussled while she shook her head. "It purple!"

"Are you talking about your imaginary friend darling?" Ruri's gentle voice spoke while she approached the two. Hiei gave a soft stare at his wife (he didn't like the term 'wife' but Ruri would gush anytime he used it so he was trying to slowly add it to his vocabulary). Though she was somewhat demon by her blood but human in appearance Ruri had grown slightly since the arrival of their daughter. Her curly blonde hairs were kept much shorter and tightly bound and her face had the full maturity and beauty of a woman in her mid twenties. Ruri often moaned that she was getting older and uglier but Hiei found no truth in her statements.

Ruri smiled brightly at Hiei and Hinari. Reaching over her daughter she placed a gentle kiss against Hiei's lips. Hinari noticed she was no longer the center of attention and patted her hand against her cheek for her own kiss which Ruri obliged by planting a raspberry on Hinari which caused her to giggle childishly.

"Okay baby," She motioned towards Hinari, "You've got to let your daddy go now, he needs to get ready to go to Kazue's ceremony tonight."

Hinari was not having it. Instead she latched further on to Hiei and let out a cat-like hiss which didn't surprise Ruri in the slightest.

"Such a protective daddy's girl aren't you," She commented, "And she get's it from you, Hiei."

"I can recall the same vigor coming from you at a campfire four years ago." Hiei countered. Though Hinari was only two she seemed to understand sarcasm and just smirked at her mother.

Ruri let out a playful cry while turning towards the back door, "You two are going to gang up on me forever, aren't you!"

It didn't take long for the trio to get ready for the ceremony, much to Hiei's displeasure. Hinari felt like such a little adult he was almost proud as he was distraught over it. When he went to help her put her dress on over her head she simply threw her hand towards his and commanded 'I do it. Sit daddy.' And when she smiled at him all but three seconds later he had noticed all her baby teeth were fully grown in. He was almost certain the last time he had left her she was still missing two teeth. But now they were all there, and he had come to the realization that Hinari was growing up entirely to fast. Perhaps if he held her and never let go she would stay the same height and age and never grow up. He had seen what terrors teenagers were.

The thought popped up in his mind about having more children, but then again if he was having a internal meltdown about teeth he couldn't possibly stomach that same feeling over and over again. Ruri was 100% correct. He was definitely turning into one of those parents. Luckily Hinari called out to him a moment later to be carried and Hiei obliged, his place as caretaker reconfirmed for at least a few more moments.

The family had opted not to use a car to get into the city as it was much faster to use their speed and agility. Hinari was most pleased to get to ride on her father's back and Ruri enjoyed watching the pair have some bonding time. And besides, Hiei had extra weight on him, and Ruri easily beat him to the school gymnasium with two minutes to spare.

It did not need to be made public that Hiei disliked humans. He disliked humans, the children of humans, and crowded tight spaces that were filled with humans and the children of humans. So the preschool martial arts ceremony was not his ideal place to be. Also, the concept of children getting awards for absolutely nothing still burned in his mind. Humans were so spoiled. But then again Kazue was his nephew and somewhat human, so of course he deserved every medal and honor that was given to him.

Ruri couldn't help but to let out a little laugh at Hiei's stoic behavior as they made their way to their seats (in the very very back). Mothers would wander up to Hinari praising "How lovely!" and "Isn't she the sweetest?"

Hiei would bluntly respond with, "Of course she is.", and keep on walking. Luckily the back row was saved for demon friends and family only and Yusuke waved them over with his usual large grin.

"Hey guys," He smiled while the three approached. Taking interest in Hinari he reached his hands out to her, "There's my girl!"

Hinari practically jumped from Hiei's arms to Yusuke's while the ex detective took to spoiling her with hugs and teasing. Yusuke had seen Hinari had view Yusuke as an older brother and caretaker; after all he had been there the moment she was brought home and for all other special occasions. When Hiei would leave for the Makai and when Ruri needed to travel with him Yusuke was always there to watch over her. Yusuke was one of the very few Hiei trusted completely with his daughter and it was another unspoken bond between the two old friends.

As they took her seats Hinari babbled on about purple alligators to Yusuke while Ruri leaned over to Hiei and gently rubbed at his knee, "Never thought you'd be at a human function like this did you?"

Hiei shrugged, "What do you think?"

"Oh it won't be too bad." Ruri smiled, "And one day maybe Hinari will be up there getting her first metal."

"Hmph." Hiei crossed his arms tightly over his chest, "That won't happen. And if it does, leave Mukuro out of it. You overly inform her."

"Oh psh," Ruri countered, "she's a good godmother, and she loves Hinari. And surprisingly enough, she's actually really nice to talk to."

Tch, if only she knew Mukuro at her worst. Also, it was quite difficult to think a demon who was so powerful she could cut through damsons and tortured demons for fun was now a doting godmother who would spoil his child and family with gifts for every human occasion possible. Perhaps this was her new way of torturing him.

The ceremony began and seemed to take hours. Each child had to go up to the front stage and recreate some type of martial arts move, and each child did it horribly. Terrible balance, no form. One child got stage fright and began to cry. The cynical part of Hiei actually found a little humor in it. Then came Kazue.

"That's my son!" Kuwabara shouted. He was seated in the front row with Yukina and their other two children. Even Yukina shouted out to her son as he took to the stage. Kazue, like his twin Rima were just over four years old now. Kazue still sported is lopsided grin and orange fuzz of hair like his father. But his red eyes were much like Hiei and Yukina's. Kazue took his stance and began his series of beginner moves. And like a member of Hiei's family, he did everything perfectly. As he should, Hiei trained him on those moves.

Kazue bowed when he was completed, which caused an applause from the audience. Kuwabara of course jumped to his feet and cheered. Yusuke even joined in, holding Hinari on his shoulders so she could participate in the celebration. Ruri glanced over at the stoic fire demon, "Better be careful Hiei, he might surpass you one day."

"Not likely." Hiei mused.

After the ceremony and each child received their trophy the crowds lingered while each student received their photo and praise. Hiei, Yusuke, Ruri and Hinari stayed near the back while Kuwabara and family made their way towards them. Kazue ran out first towards Hiei, trophy in hand,

"Mister Hiei Mister Hiei! Look," He handed his trophy over, "I got one!"

"So you did," Hiei commented while staring at the plastic figurine at the top. "You must be proud."

"My sensi said I was the best in his class! And, and-"

"Mister Hiei Mister Hiei Mister Hiei!" Rima was next to run over to the fire demon, "How come you didn't train me in dancing?"

"He's a fighter Rima." Kazue answered with boyish annoyance.

"We'll you're still comin' to my dance show right? And all my practices stuff!"

"No Mister Hiei said he would help me."

"Not fair!" Rima wined.

"Kazue, Rima! Don't overwhelm him." Yukina chastised softly as she approached her two children, "Hello Hiei."

"Yukina." He answered simply.

"Well hey the whole gang is here!" Kuwabara boasted from behind his wife. Kuwabara was a proud father, not only for his three lovely children, but for his fourth child, his brand new burly mustache. For a man in his early twenties it was a proud moment. But he was most proud of his young son on his special day.

"Kurama sends his best wishes from Paris, er where ever he is these days." Yusuke spoke while still juggling the now squirming Hinari. Eventually he let her down to play with the twins.

Apparently Kurama had gone to Paris for a 'Treasures of Europe' tour. The fox had seemed to become slightly reclusive over the years, which didn't seem to set of any alarms for anyone. IF anything Kurama was so involved in taking care of his mother and everyone in his life it was probably a nice reprieve for him to have some alone time. Though Hiei wondered how many precious artifacts will go missing after the fox's visit.

"Well speaking of treasure," Ruri reached out for the baby attached to Yukina's hip. "How is my little Kai."

Kai was the child born of the 'power of their love' as Kuwabara had stated it years ago. True, Ice Maidens never had a child out of their 100 year cycle but Kai was living testament to that. Like Yukina he had a round face and big red eyes. His blue hair was also like his mother's but he did sport a few freckles on his cheeks. Everyone was curious to see how he would grow up or what powers he would take.

Kai nervously squirmed in Ruri's arms for a brief moment before he eventually settled into a more comfortable position. Unlike Hinari who was in similar age to Kai, Kai was much more shy and reserved.

The group began to chat while the rest of the gym died out, leaving them and a few other parents. Hiei was about to gather his mate and child before the brush of the small box was felt in his pocket. Reaching into his hand he kneeled down before passing it over to Kazue.

"Mukuro sent this for you." He spoke. Kazue's eyes lit up as he clasped the white box before ripping it open.

"How sweet of Lady Mukuro." Yukina smiled, "We'll have to send her a thank you card."

"Do demons get mail in the Makai?" Kuwabara questioned.

"Oh its a daggar!"

Everyones attention snapped towards Kazue who was holding a small gold-tipped dagger, "It even has my name on it!" Kazue exclaimed.

Hiei was going to kill Mukuro.

"I wanna see it!" Rima wined while trying to grab the sharp object. Kazue swung the knife away from her, causing the group to gasp slightly.

Each of the adults went to reach for the knife while the twins were busy arguing on who was going to play with it first. Hinari decided to run and stand behind her father who turned around to comfort her.

"Hinari its a dull knife." He soothed while begging to bend down, "Its barely-"

Before he could finish his words there was a large gasp from the group and a sharp, dull pain that erupted from the side of his leg. Stretching slightly to turn around, he glanced at the back of his leg to see the golden handle of the dagger sticking out from the flesh of his thigh, just below the bass of his ass.

"Oh," Ruri began. "Uhh," Yusuke added.

Hinari was the first to make an audible reaction. Noticing the dagger she let out a shriek, "You killed dad!"

"I didn't do it!" Rima shouted with her hands up.

"I, I, Mister Hiei..." Kazue choked while holding back tears. Eventually a few slipped, morphing into round gems that clattered on the floor.

"Okay!" Ruri snapped into action, "Let go somewhere a little...private shall we. Can you walk Hiei?"

Hiei pulled out the dagger with a grunt and limped into an open classroom with the rest of the group. Yusuke closed the door as Ruri began rummaging through the closets to find a first aid kit.

"Hiei, pull down your pants." Ruri commanded from within one of the closets. Hiei who was now leaning on the teachers desk, his leg leaking blood which only further terrified his daughter and the rest of the children, gave his mate a growl of disapproval.

The children were in the back of the room with Yukina and Kuwabara who were trying to do their best to calm the still frantic children. Yusuke on the other hand was having a bit of a laugh over everything.

"I mean," Yusuke shrugged, "you've had worse, right?"
"Found it!" Ruri cheered while holding the first aid kit, "Hiei, your pants?" "I'm not," He hissed, "undressing in here."

"Hiei its your bad leg," Ruri reminded him, "it could get infected and you may not be able to walk again!" The last part was a stretch but everyone's tensions were high at this point.

"Tch, not happening-" Before his threat could get through Ruri grabbed at Hiei and pulled him around the teachers desk and in a swift move, pulled at Hiei's belts and dropped his pants to asses the damage. Hiei barely had time to cover himself with his hands.

"Ruri!" Hiei snapped while his face flushed. Luckily Yusuke was blocking Hiei from the rest of the group and Ruri worked fast and efficiently from cleaning the wound and wrapping a bandage around the tender skin.

Yusuke peaked behind his shoulder to asses the damage only to receive a sharp glare from Hiei.

"What are you looking at!"
"Man how can you wear pants so tight with that-"

"Yusuke!" Ruri interjected with a spray of disinfectant to his face. It only took Ruri a few minutes longer to finish the job and restore peace to the group, "There all done."

Hiei just glared at his wife and quickly re dressed himself. Before he could get a final remark in his eyes turned over towards Hinari, Rima, and Kazue. All the children were still recovering from the incident but Kazue was clearly the most affected of all.

"Mister Hiei I," He bowed his head "I'm sorry!"

In truth, the dagger wasn't even that deep into his skin. It was sharp as hell but at this stage in his life he was pretty much immune to pain. If anything it was a nuisance, and an embarrassment. Hiei was able to crouch down towards Kazue to lift his still bowed head up by his chin. His chubby face was getting ready for a third wave of tears which also gave Hiei a wave of emotions all his own. "Save your tears child." He spoke softly, "We are going to have to work on your aim next time we train."

Kazue immediately smiled and all seemed to be better in the world.

O.

Hiei decided that after the whole knife incident that it was the time for he and his family to say goodbye and the trio made their way back to their home. Hinari was already asleep against her fathers back by the time they walked into the house and she was easily placed in her bed without much of an argument. That left Hiei and Ruri standing together in the hallway.

"Well that was easier than I thought." Ruri said, "You should have seen here the past few nights. It's like putting down a monster."

Hiei smirked while he stared down his wife, "Your turn."

"What are you, omph!" Ruri was cut off as Hiei grabbed at her legs to throw her over his shoulders. She pounded at his back and kicked her legs while she was carried across he hall and towards their bedroom. Hiei pushed open the door and tossed Ruri onto the bed. Pulling at his belts he disrobed and joined her.

Hours later Hiei lay stretched out on his back; Ruri's bare legs dangling over his. She nuzzled closer to him, letting out a sigh before speaking,

"Hiei."

"Hm."

She poked her head up from the covers, "Are you happy here?"

Hiei stared at her. The moon outside peeked through the clouds, allowing a little bit more light so he could stare at her face. He secretly enjoyed how disheveled her hair became after they had sex. It was wild and spiraled out from her head. Ruri would always try to soothe it, but Hiei would often try to tire her so much so that she didn't have the energy to.

"I mean," she continued, "I know the Human World isn' the most ideal place for you to live. Maybe we can change? What if Hinari and I move to the Makai..." she let her thought trail off into the quiet room.

"The Makai is not a place for you and our child." Hiei commented. He didn't turn his head, but his red eyes moved over towards Ruri.

"I mean Mukuro's fortress is creepy but we could make it work. And she'll have 77 elite soldiers to look after her. We'd have to think about school though. Does The Makai have school-"

Hiei leaned in to kiss Ruri, effectively silencing her rambling. Parting his lips he spoke, "My home is with you. Wherever that may be."

Ruri smiled and nuzzled closer to him, "...In that case maybe we could move into the city where we'll be closer to-"

"Dont push it." Hiei countered.

"...You have a really cute ass by the way." Ruri smirked while nuzzling further into Hiei's shoulder, "Maybe you should get stabbed more often."

If someone were to ask Hiei seven years ago if this would be his life today he would call them a fool. However, he had finally realized, he was the fool for not searching for this life sooner.
