Last Time on the Virgin Wife:

Once upon a time, there was a boy and a girl who almost fell in love.

But they didn't, because she was married to the boy's brother.

Instead they did the honorable thing and rejected the possibility of their happily ever after.

Chapter Three: Silent Night

Hinata hummed along to the music whilst she flipped pancakes. She electric slid over to the fridge and pulled out the orange juice. She did a little shimmy while pouring the juice into two cups, and without even looking, she held out one of the glasses to her left at the same time as she gulped down her own.

"Thanks," Sasuke replied as he grabbed the offered juice and sipped on it while reading the newspaper.

A month had passed since school ended for summer, Sasuke had gone back to working at Uchiha Corp (after his weekend at Vegas), and Hinata had been catching up with friends and family, as well as volunteering. She could have easily gotten a job at Uchiha Corp or Hyuuga Inc, but she hated business, much to the eternal disappointment of her father.

Itachi had visited on occasion since her 'moment of weakness', but both had kept their discussion a secret, knowing that nothing could come from it. Itachi was too honorable and loyal to his family to cause a scandal and Hinata was similar. But that night, they mourned the loss of what could have been.

(Get your minds out of the gutter – I'm still a virgin!) Hinata shook her head in amusement at her internal commentary. But it was true: nothing improper had happened though the fact that they slept in the same bed together would give their parents a panic attack as they were very traditional. Hinata and Itachi had just spent the night entwined with each other. While she knew Itachi wasn't a cuddler, she suspected that he had just wanted to make the most of the one night they had together, just like she had. It had been perfectly innocent, despite the little voice in the back of her head telling her it didn't have to be. (After all, Itachi must be a fantastic lover – the man is just too good at everything else not to be mindblowing at that too!)

Sasuke was none the wiser once again – that Itachi had stayed the night, that she had been sick, and that he was the second choice. He'd come back a couple days later with a hangover, made obvious by the dark shades on his face and the deep grimace on his face at the slightest noise or light.

Today, they were planning to spend the day together in the house. Doing nothing but having innocent fun.

Piling the pancakes on Sasuke's plate, she grabbed some fruits to eat with her own oatmeal. She placed both plates on their kitchen table, which was smaller than the dining table reserved for family dinners and special occasions, and started eating without waiting for Sasuke.

"No tomatoes?" She could hear the pout in his voice and she hid her giggles.

"We'll have them for lunch. It's blueberry pancakes, though," she offered, and he immediately started digging in. He loved blueberry pancakes but refused to eat them often because they were threatening to his waistline. Hinata shook her head. (The vanity in this man – he's so careful despite the fact that he has an amazing metabolism, yet he drinks alcohol as if it's water, not caring about the damage it does to his kidneys!) Sometimes she really wanted to smack Sasuke, but not for the reasons he might think.

Hinata finished her meal quickly and left her dishes in the sink. Usually, she would wash them herself, but today was the only day Sasuke took care of the dishes. Even then, he just piled them in the dishwasher at the end of the day. (Lazy bum)

She threw herself across the sofa and grabbed the remote. Flopping onto her back, she turned on the TV and started flipping through channels, killing time until Sasuke finished his breakfast.

She had started dozing off when Sasuke came into the room and headed immediately for the PS3. She grinned, adrenaline humming through her body at the thought of Rock Band. She wasn't much of a gamer, but there was something about rocking out with a fake guitar and a microphone that made her love it. Sasuke silently set the mike into its stand and handed her one of the guitars. Since they had two guitar toys for Rock Band, they could pick either bass or lead guitar. He always set up for bass for since she liked to sing while he set up for the lead guitar. Hinata knew that later, he'd switch so that she could try the drums. Sasuke smirked at her as he clicked Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody.

For the next couple of hours, they just played like kids, rocking out to songs. Sometimes he would sing and she would try to drum, but they mostly stuck to their strengths. Hinata loved it because they both had fun – it was rare to see Sasuke smile and not smirk, but he always seemed to smile after a Rock Band session with her.

They stopped because Hinata had to get lunch ready. So while Sasuke put away the games and turned on some music, Hinata prepped the food. She smiled softly as she noticed Sasuke walk in and prop his head on his folded arms, content to just watch her move around in the kitchen. While they were certainly rich enough to hire servants to cook, Hinata found an inner peace every time she stepped in here. They only paid someone to occasionally come in and clean and do laundry for them both. Hinata made sure that the cleaning woman was a trusted old woman who used to work for the Hyuuga family. No dirty secrets would pass those lips, not even with a crowbar.

Hinata cooked a simple spaghetti and meatballs and made sure to cut extra tomatoes for Sasuke to munch on. She even carved two to look like flowers. She added a little extra cheese for herself. Dropping the garlic bread quickly onto the plates, she sucked on her fingers, which were stinging from the heat of the bread.

Again silently, they ate their lunches, only sharing smiles when one would catch the eye of the other. But even that didn't happen much because Hinata kept her focus on her food – she had worked up an appetite playing Rock Band.

This time, though, she waited patiently at the table for Sasuke to finish his dinner. When he did, she calmly gathered both their plates and placed them in the sink and returned with dessert, which consisted of fruit salad. He thanked her softly and she nodded in response before sitting down and eating. This time, when they finished, he gathered both their plates and she wandered into their family room. She set up "the Dark Knight" to watch. It was Sasuke's favourite movie at the moment, especially seeing as the finale in the trilogy was coming out in theatres in a month. Hinata preferred the psychological mental warfare that the Joker used on his victims. That, and she had a soft spot for Bale – she did like her men tall, dark and intense.

She curled into the love seat with the remote beside her and waited for Sasuke to return. He did so with her favourite blanket draped over his arm. Pausing slightly, he pulled her up off the seat before sitting down and pulling her onto his lap. They wiggled against each other, searching for a comfortable position, and when they finally found it, he gently threw the blanket over them both before pressing play. She lazily watched the Joker rob a bank and kill all his comrades. She'd seen the movie so many times that she could quote some of the lines. Hinata curled herself deeper into Sasuke's embrace while he tightened his arms around her. She let her eyes drift close while the movie played.

The last thing she remembered before falling asleep was Sasuke's fingers trailing up and down her back.

When she woke, it was to the sound of nothing but Sasuke's heartbeat. The movie had long since stopped and it seemed instead of waking her, Sasuke had chosen to fall asleep along with her. Twisting her head, she spotted the time. It had been more than a few hours – it was now close to dinner time, in fact. She carefully peeled herself off Sasuke and grabbed the phone to call for a pizza. She let Sasuke doze while she lit some candles and set them on the dining table. It was one of those ridiculously long tables with one seat at each end and nine seats on the sides. She set a candle in the center and the plates around it.

Walking over to nudge Sasuke awake, she spoke quietly into ear. "It's time."

Sleep cleared from his eyes and he nodded in response. Together they climbed the stairs before parting ways to head to their respective bedrooms.

She stepped into the shower for a quick wash before quickly climbing out to dry and apply some sweet smelling lotion. She slipped into a red cocktail dress before grabbing some nude pumps and checked the clock. She still had roughly twenty minutes, unless the pizza man was early. Pulling her hair into a fast bun with some loose strands to frame her face, she put on her teardrop diamond earrings, along with a matching necklace, just in time to hear the doorbell ring.

Snatching the pizza money off the dressing table, she walked swiftly down the stairs and opened the door to the pizza deliveryman whose eyes widen and jaw dropped.

"How much?" she asked, only for the man to continue staring. But he held out the receipt. She quickly gave him thirty dollars and told him to keep the change while she politely but firmly pulled the pizza from his stiff grip. She gave him a soft smile while she slowly closed the door, if only to make up for the fact that she was still kind of slamming the door in the stunned guy's face.

She speed-walked into the dining room, where Sasuke was surprisingly waiting for her. He had poured them both a fancy glass full of Pepsi. He looked, as always, very dashing. Black slacks and a black button down shirt with the first three buttons open to show his Uchiha fan necklace, which rested on his collarbone. His feet were bare.

He gently pulled the box from her hands and set it down on the table before placing his hands on her hips and lifting her up onto the table. Kneeling down in front of her, he gently pulled the pumps off her feet before raising himself onto the table opposite her.

Instead of using the chairs like normal humans, Sasuke and Hinata had both decided to sit on the table to be closer to each other. Mikoto would have had a heart attack at the impropriety of their actions.

Kneeling on her knees while Sasuke crossed his legs, Hinata opened the pizza box with their favourite Chicken Supreme. Sasuke grabbed a slice and served her first before taking a slice for himself. They raised their glasses in a silent toast before sipping from them.

Sasuke waited until she had the first bite in her mouth before asking, "Would you ever divorce me?"

Most people would have choked on their food, but Hinata merely blinked and continued to chew. "If I had a reason to."

"What would that be?" He nibbled on his slice.

"I'm not sure. It would have to be something big enough to cause me to forsake my family, because to divorce you would be similar to divorcing my entire family."

"Hmm." He nodded and took a bigger bite.

"What about you? Have you ever considered divorcing me?"

"No."

"Not even once? Don't lie." She didn't believe him for a moment. She knew he'd never wanted to marry her. He'd made that abundantly clear in their first months of marriage.

"I used to. But after the first year, I decided against it. I have no reason to divorce you."

"I see." Hinata did understand. Their first year had been eventful, and it was what had shaped their dysfunctional relationship.

"What about kids? Mother is pushing us."

"We'll go to a clinic. If anyone asks, we'll just say it's because I wanted to make sure we have a boy. The new clinics can pick and choose your 'Y' chromosome swimmers."

"You don't want to do it the normal way? It will tear your hymen and most doctors can tell whether or not a woman has had sex."

"No. There are many ways to lose your hymen, and most doctors can't say anything because of the patient-doctor confidentiality."

Sasuke had a hard-to-read expression on his face. Though she could see the different emotions fighting in his eyes, she didn't bother to read into it. He knew why she would choose this way.

Hinata might be forgiving but she was not forgetful.

"It will be more painful."

"It will be painful regardless. Plus, there is medication for the pain."

Sasuke kept quiet and they both ate in silence for a few moments before he switched to a safer topic. "Any plans for the summer?"

"I'm thinking of taking a course in the second half of summer."

Sasuke nodded in agreement. "I can see your boredom."

"How's work?"

"Good. I'm gaining the respect of my peers, underlings and many of the departments heads."

Hinata smiled. "I'm glad."

"You were wise to recommend me to start from somewhere in the middle of the company instead of taking the VP job that Father had originally offered me."

"You were wise to see the wisdom in my statement."

They fell silent as they finished eating. Sasuke grabbed their plates and the pizza box for sliding off the table. Hinata waited patiently for him to return.

The lights dimmed and Sasuke came back in. The candles from the cake he was holding lighted up his face. Placing it gently between them, he climbed back on the table.

She smiled. "Together?"

He nodded.

"Three."

"Two."

"One."

They leaned down to blow out the numerous candles on the cake. Without straightening, Sasuke leaned further towards her.

"Happy Anniversary, wife," he murmured against her lips before capturing them for a deep but slow and soft kiss.
