Think they know you more than you do

"She's in denial," James says as he watches the retreating form of Lily Evans. "She secretly loves me."

Sirius laughs and pats him on the back. Peter looks back and forth between the door to the Great Hall and his friend. Remus shakes his head, laughing with Sirius. "Yeah, if you classify shoving pudding in your hair as love, she loves you a lot."

"Now isn't the time to be sarcastic, Moony," James groans. "She loves me, I know it."

They don't disagree with him because they know the speech that would come with it. So instead, they lead him back to the common room. James, Sirius and Peter take off towards their dorm while Remus hangs back. "Are you coming, Moony?"

"Yeah, give me a minute," he calls back. He finally spots the person he wants to talk to, "Lily."

"Oh, hey, Remus," she replies without looking up from her parchment. "What do you need?"

"Why do I have to need something?"

"Because you usually only want to speak well of Potter, or you want my notes. Since I know you took notes, it must be the first," Lily answers. "But I really need to finish this essay, so can we get on with it."

"He's not that bad," Remus started. He ignores her when she laughs, "He's only trying to impress you, you know? But you don't notice him unless you're in an argument with him. So I don't exactly blame him."

"Don't assume I don't notice him when we're not fighting, Remus. You know what they say about assuming?" Lily's cheeks turn slightly red, and Remus knows he's angered her. "And you don't blame him for annoying me constantly! I certainly do."

"So you're saying that you do notice him. That's interesting," Remus says, avoiding the latter of the conversation. "Because he just might stop pestering you if you try to be civil with him outside the classroom."

"Thanks for you advise, Remus. But I really need to get back to my essay."

Remus knows he's been defeated so he stands, "Just think about it, Lily. That's all I'm asking. Because you just might find out he isn't so bad after all." He doesn't wait for a reply. By the time he makes it back to the dorm, the others are mid-way through planning a prank. Some things never change.
