'Wonderstruck'

Epilogue

By Songsix

.*.*. Present Day .*.*.

Have you ever met a person that changed your life simply by meeting them? All they had to do was take your hand, tell you their name, and you hear them speak; suddenly, everything you've known is different. They inspire you, they rearranged your outlook on life, and they make you infatuated with the idea of something wonderful. They make you dream.

Five years ago, he met a boy who showed him to be daring when he jumped off that high dive head first with nothing but a cable and no net; who got him to do something stupid and impulsive leading to a path of bad and quick decisions; who showed him to live, by convincing him to pull his first practical joke recklessly; who inspired him to take a moment to enjoy life when he showed him the sparkling sky; who had amazing dark blue eyes that pulled him in, showing him it's not only girls who could be pretty. Five years ago, he met a boy; he fell in love – hopelessly. He was wonderstruck by a person he had only known for an hour.

Since that fateful night, he never thought he'd ever see him again. In fact, each day felt like he had spent forever wondering if that boy knew what he had done to him. Only in his dreams did he ever believe he'd meet him again…

He started in a light jog making his way towards their destination, but as his heart started to race so did his feet. He adjusted his goggles while shoving each foot into the ground forcing them forward faster and faster holding the other boy against his chest tighter and tighter. With every step, his feet felt light off the ground almost as if they were flying. The colors around them blurred from swirls of pink, orange into dark shades of blue, and purple as the sun begun to set. Flashing bulbs of white and yellow shined brightly before dimming as the stars took the sky and they found themselves heading up a grassy, green hill.

As they neared their stopped, Kid Flash made a quick gulp starting to feel those butterflies climb up his windpipe fluttering around his belly. As time began to slow, he felt more aware of everything surrounding them. The crisp freshness of the air, the chirping of the crickets in the forest, the mushy texture of the grass beneath them, the warmth of Robin's body in his arms. He could feel every movement, every twitch, every touch, and every breath. Holding this boy in his arms was always like a dream, simply too surreal to comprehend. At the same, it was like the most natural thing in the whole world, and he could spend the rest of his life standing there. Just. Like. That.

Unfortunately, he had to let Robin down knowing it would be pretty weird of him to keep hanging on to him like that. With a lot of reluctance, he let the boy down, his body slipping away from arms far too easily for his own taste. He hoped to God the boy didn't notice anything unusual. Once Robin turned to face him and grinned, he felt a bit of relief that he didn't seem off at all. Although, he couldn't help but feel slightly disappointed that Robin didn't react in the slightest bit. At least, he didn't think he did.

Kid Flash slipped off his goggles and took a big breath scratching the back of his head. He came here for a reason, and one reason only…

"Wow, this view is incredible! And the sky is so–"

"Sparkling?"…to know the truth.

Robin, distracted by the view, had to jump back for a second when Kid Flash started to speak. "What did you say?" he asked with a small undertone of nervousness as he did his best to conceal his worry. He scanned the older teen for a second wondering as they simply stood there looking him right in the eye. For a moment, he was sure the speedster could see right through his domino mask, but of course, it could only be his imagination and paranoia. No one could penetrate this awesome bat-gear…right?

Wally continued to eye him carefully. His green orbs shining and that scared Robin to know for the first time ever, they weren't so easy to read. There was something mysterious and knowing about them, but what could that possibly mean? When the speedster removed his stare, he directed his eyes toward the view before them. They were a top a grassy hill that overlooked the twin cities. There was a mesh of grey and violet as city light sky and night met in the middle. Stars twinkled from above as fluorescent lights did from below. It was breath taking. "I used to love looking at the stars when I still lived in Blue Valley, but when my family moved out here with Aunt Iris I never saw them anymore," Wally described, taking a seat plopping his bottom to the ground. He pulled his knees to his chest and patted the ground next to him, where Robin sat down as well.

"Good thing you found this place than, huh?" Robin commented, putting away his suspicion and enjoying the sight with his best friend.

Wally paused before confessing, "Franny actually showed it to me."

Robin flinched slightly, until he said, "This must be a very special spot to you two."

Green eyes closed in daydream remembering before squinting as regret swarmed over and Wally explained, "nah, every kid knows about this place. I was just the only one who didn't because I was new to Keystone."

"You don't live in Central City?" Robin asked, slightly surprised at this new piece of information.

"Yeah."

"I didn't know that."

Wally chuckled giving the boy a big white smile, "If it's any consolation, you know everything else,"he pointed out, referring to their first not so 'turbing' meeting as sidekicks. Even Robin cackled a bit.

"Good point."

They both relaxed in their spots leaning back on the elbows and legs spread a part staring up. Their gloved hands were close enough to touch, but not enough to actually do so. With hesitance and in forced confidence, breaking the silence Wally asked, "where do you live?" Green orbs now on him waiting for a real answer for once. Not one of those bullshit excuses he's been hearing for awhile now.

"Gotham, duh," Robin replied, not ready to give out anything. He could already feel the guilt weighing down on him knowing that wasn't what Wally wanted to hear. It was never what he wanted to hear. Those green orbs started to dig into him even more, he could almost feel them breaking through his mask.

"Yeah, but I mean, where did you grow up and stuff?" Wally interrogated not willing to budge one bit. He was so close, he could just feel it.

Robin looked away and remained quiet for a full second before muttering with a tight throat, "You know I can't talk about that."

"You can't talk about a lot of things," Wally snapped, and was taken aback even by himself. He didn't realized this was frustrating him more than he ever knew. He's only recently been suspecting something. Then again, he's probably been wondering since the very beginning…maybe he's always known…

"Wally, you know why."

"No, I don't anymore. Don't you trust me?"he demanded to know, standing up and gesturing to himself. His brow creased, his nose blazing, and his heart pounding.

Robin rolled his eyes and stood up to meet Wally on his level. Throwing his arms into the air he yelled back, "Look, I'm not like you. I can't be like you. I don't just run around telling everyone who I am! That's not safe." His voice was strain, and his teeth were gritted. He didn't want to fight, he could really use a break especially after the mission they just had. However, he could already tell Wally wasn't going to drop it. This only made him feel even more tired than before.

"What's the worst that can happen?" Wally challenged, crossing his arms.

Robin almost wanted to punch him in the gut. Did he really not understand? "What's the worse that can happen? Wally, you told Magenta you were Kid Flash. She's a villain, who knows what she can do to y–"

"Did she ever do anything?" He was quick to interrupt him. Now his eyes were close to tearing, and Robin could tell he touched a nerve. "Answer me."

"No. I guess not yet–"

"And not ever! Because I trust her. I trust her with secrets I never shared with anyone else before you!" There was a cry in his voice, and a bob in his Adam's apple. Suddenly, Robin wished he could say everything if it would make it better. But he couldn't. He just couldn't. He didn't like seeing Wally look so serious, because that wasn't who he was, but here he was making his best friend feel this way.

"I never even told Linda who I'd been with longer! I never even told Tommy, Tommy who used to be my best friend. Tommy, who…who's never going to know now…" Wally voice died out, and he had to look away to wipe his face. Robin meekly rubbed his own elbow sorry that ever had to come up. But when he came back up he was a bit calmer, still angry unfortunately. "But I told Franny, because I knew I could."

His voice was as small as he felt as a pang tugged at his chest, "why? Why her?"he asked.

Wally pursed his lips and relaxed his brow, setting a hand on Robin's shoulder searching for understanding, "because I can trust her to never want to hurt me."

"She was trying to kill you today!" But Robin slapped his hand away immediately like fire had touched him. Wally almost retaliated, but then he saw something in the boy's face that quickly brought him down.

"I mean personally. Not once did she ever use my secret identity against me." Wally continued waving his hands in expression.

"Personally? Yeah, because that's better than physically." Robin scoffed, rubbing his temples.

"You get the point, Rob." Wally stood by his convictions. When it all seemed useless, Wally stood away from him, looking back at the twin cities. Robin groaned to himself knowing he said all the wrong things, but it was necessary.

With a loud sigh Robin tried again, "Look, I get it. You trust her. I understand–"

Wally was quick to stop him, "No, you don't. Because if you did you would tell your own best friend who you are. Unless you don't trust me,"he challenged with green orbs boring into the whites of Robin's mask. Robin stared right back at him with no backing down.

"Don't ever say that. I trust you with my life." He meant it, how else would he have known Kid Flash would catch him?

"Then why can't you just tell me this? Why can't I know who my best friend is?"

Robin clenched his fists yelling out, "You know who he is, it's me!" His voice echoed through the forest, 'it's me' resounding in their ears adding to the growing tension.

When they were met with the quiet chirping of the crickets once more, Wally argued with a soft voice and pleading green, "But there's more about you I'll never know, because you have to keep your identity a secret."

Robin stood there, his mouth in a firm line and with crossed arms, for awhile letting the gentle wind blow across their bodies. There were a few times Wally was sure Robin was going to say something, and he'd start to see something familiar in the frame of his face, but then there was only more silence. Eventually, with a voice full of sorrow he muttered, "Just let it go, Wally."

Wally couldn't take it anymore, it had been eating up inside of him for too long. He took Robin by the shoulders burying the top of his head into his chest allowing the droplets to fall and disappear into the grass. His fingers dug into Robin's uniform, and his back arched and strained. Wally cried out in an almost scream, "Rob! I don't even know what your eyes look like, but you get to look at mine. Every. Single. Day." Every word was like a punch in the face to Robin.

Not knowing what else he could possibly say, he gently pulled Wally's hands from him and started to walk back down the hill, "We need to get back. Flash will wonder where we went." He bit his lip not caring how painful it was after everything that happened that day. The burning sensation was far better than knowing what he was doing to his best friend. Just as he was beginning to pick up his pace expecting the other boy to follow, Robin found himself frozen as a statue.

"Years ago, I went to this circus." Robin was sure his heart stopped. "I met this boy who was performing in it, and he was amazing. I can't– I've been thinking–I just thought maybe–you know what? Nevermind…" Wally felt deflated and hopeless. He should have never even tried, it was an impossible to think he'd ever get that close. He was just about to turn and join Robin back down the hill when a voice suddenly appeared beside him on the top.

"I was nine when it happened…" Wally was sure his heart stopped. "…there was an accident, I'm sure you've heard about it."

"And presenting the youngest of our troupe–"

"Robin–"

The boy hushed him continuing his story with confidence, "after it happened, I was all alone. But Bruce took me in. He saved me. He gave me a life. He gave me the opportunity to be who I am right now."

"Forget I said anything, you don't have to–"

With slight annoyance this time, Robin slapped his hand over Wally's mouth glaring. When he was sure the speedster would keep his mouth shut he went on, "Now I'm living in a world I don't ever regret entering. Never, did I ever want to betray everything he has given me. That's why I follow his rules like they're sacred or somethin'…he's done everything for me." He gestured to his own uniform and the 'R' that had been imprinted on his left breast.

Wally gaped in complete shock. He was speechless as to what he was supposed to say. What was there to say? There were a million things on his mind, but he couldn't choose just one. Here it was finally, it was exactly what he had been waiting on for years now. The truth. However, some things were more important, such as their friendship. "I shouldn't have–I…"

Before Wally could even get a chance to apologize, Robin shushed him for the third time that night placing a finger on his lips this time. He wore a smile, and it was relaxed. It was as though Atlas had shrugged his shoulders, "No, it's ok. You were right."

The speedster scratched his head sheepishly keeping his gaze to the ground trying not to show how happy this really made him. "I'm sorry I forced it out of you,"he apologized.

Robin shook his head placing his hand on Wally's shoulder giving it an affectionate squeeze, "No, you're right. You deserve to know who your best friend is, and I do trust you."

Wally brought his stare up, and now even he was sure he could see right through that domino mask.

They lingered on at a loss for words fidgeting and tugging at arms until Wally broke the ice, "So…is Superman still your favorite superhero?"

"Tch, duh." Robin responded without skipping a beat, grinning. "You've always known, haven't you?"

Wally smiled knowingly for some odd reason shaking his head, "I didn't figure it out just for the sake of knowing your secret identity."

"Then why? Why would you go look that up?"

"It wasn't those old news headlines that told me everything–" Wally took a step closer towards Robin, closing the gap between them. His breath tickled the top of Robin's forehead. " –it was you."

With a soft whisper Robin wondered, "What do you mean?"

"I didn't want to get my hopes up the second time. At the time it was like I figured it out, but I was scared to be wrong." There was a strange glint in Wally's eyes, and that scared Robin a bit. He wasn't quite sure why though.

"Why?"

The other boy chuckled, "I've spent forever being inspired by the boy who taught me to jump head first into danger." Robin felt the curve of the corners of his own lips as he smiled back looking up at him. Wally could swear that if they weren't flying as they free fell from that building, when he carried the boy in his arms as he was light off his feet…well…they certainly must be now, because he couldn't possibly describe how he felt as nothing else but walking on cloud nine. This was a moment he knew he would never forget for the rest of his life, but every moment with Robin he never did.

"I never forgot either y'know?" Robin confessed, his cheeks warming up, but it was too dark for Kid Flash to be able to tell.

"Really?"

Robin took a step back from bashfully, as he explained, "I never had many friends my own age in the circus. But you were a kid actually my age, or close to it at least."

"I was your first friend?" Wally asked with disbelief.

"Yeah, you were."

Placing a hand on his hip and rubbing his chin with the other, Wally went into a mock sense of confusion. "That why you kept tabs on me and not Kaldur?" hepondered with a dramatic effect.

Robin huffed at him giving the speedster a swift punch to the arm. "Hey, you were important. You knocked me off my feet too."

"How? You could actually do stuff like plunge into death. I was just a country boy that stayed home all day." Wally exasperated, waving his arms in large circles.

"You were willing to come up to me and talk to me. I know it sounds stupid, but I was kind of…well…I was shy." Robin grinned, and Wally was sure he had to be lying. No way would someone as cocky and confident as Robin ever be a wallflower. This was his best friend, the guy who wasn't afraid to make conversation with a bunch of bad guys, for goodness sakes, in the heat of battle!

"You? Shy? You performed in front of thousands of people!" exclaimed Wally, making Robin laugh at his reaction.

"Doesn't mean I had to talk to them. It takes real charisma to approach someone that way," Robin pointed out, gesturing to Wally with his hands. The most bold boy, or person for that matter, he's ever known. He's never known a lot of people who could go up to just anyone with so much ease. Maybe it was those easy toreadgreen orbs, or that personality. Whatever it was, it was magic to Robin.

Wally felt his own face warm up, "That doesn't mean much."

"Sure it does, if I never met you I'd probably never have the guts to just go up to people. To make friends. You're the reason I take chances with people."

"You're the reason I take chances with myself."

They smiled at each other for the longest time. Their hearts were racing faster and faster than the speed sound, light, or Superman. There was an air of familiarity, and nostalgia as they simply stood there staring back at each other beneath the sparkling sky. Finally, with careful hands, Robin dipped his nails beneath the edge of his domino mask tearing at the spirit glue. Wally was breathless, and he felt his own reflexes move to stop him, but he didn't. With absolutely no hesitance or nervousness, Robin ripped off his mask and let it hang between his fingers. What was not the first time ever, Wally felt at awe as he waswonderstruck.

Blue Eyes whispered, "Have We Met?"

Green Eyes whispered back, "Yes."

"Well…I'm Wally. Wally West."

"Richard Grayson. People usually call me Dick."

"Bet you get a lot of jokes for that name."

"You don't even know the half of it."

Who knew he would find him years later, only to be clueless to who had become his best friend? Later he would also realize the reason his best friend already knew everything about him before they met on that roof top; the reason they clicked so quickly even though they fought; the reason he trusted him so much to reveal his biggest kept secret without worry. Since the beginning, what all he's ever wanted to say was–

.*.*.*. I was enchanted to meet you too .*.*.*.
