She was leaving him.

She said Hardison made her happy and she hoped he understood.

He didn't understand.
He loved her to death and there she was walking away, but as she turned around waving good bye with a bright smile he plastered on one of his own and lied some more. "I wish you and Hardison the best."

Eliot may have missed her like hell already but he would gladly lie again and again if it meant he would continue to get to see her smile.
