"You're real….like…you exist…" Brittany said in a hushed voice, staring between her own reflection and Sugar's in the bathroom mirror. Sugar looked up from washing her hands and panicked.
"What do you mean?" She squeaked out, turning off the water and taking a step backwards. Brittany turned to face her with a bright smile and wide eyes.
"You look like what me and Santana would look like if we got mixed through the lady-baby blender. And you remind me of ….of us. I don't know how, but you do." She paused, "did my time machine work?"
"Oh my God, MOM, don't tell anybody! Figures you'd be weird enough to figure this whole thing out!" She rambled rapidly, wringing her hands together and bouncing on the balls of her feet.
"Say that again" Brittany commanded, her eyes immediately softening and her excitement tapering off into a serene sort of peace.
"What, that you're CRAZY as ever?" Sugar whined, slipping into the character she was back at home, "I seriously CAN'T BELIEVE –
"No," Brittany interrupted in wonder, "Call me that again."
"Oh." Sugar's eyes were sharp with realization as she said in a voice that suddenly matched the blonde's in awe, "Mom. I called you…mom."
Brittany's eyes misted over as she leapt forward to crush the girl in a hug. Sugar hugged back, laughing and trying not to cry all at once, thankful that her mom was special enough to embrace things that didn't always seem real. She was truly amazing. They pulled apart, unable to break eye contact.
"What do you call…I mean…" she trailed off, afraid to voice her assumption in case it was somehow wrong.
"What do I call Santana" Sugar prompted softly, causing Brittany to breathe out an excited "yeah", her mouth rising into a large grin.
"I call her Mama." She supplied with a loving smile, and Brittany squealed and giggled through her now abundant tears.
"Oh I love you already!" She gushed, wrapping her daughter up in her arms once more, "You're so pretty! And I can't wait to have you, and Santana and - and I can't wait to see you grow to be this all over again!"
"I love you too, Mom," Sugar choked out, wiping a stray tear before becoming focused again. "But really…only ONE more question, and then we have to pretend this NEVER happened, got it?" She explained sternly, still grinning despite her seriousness.
"Got it!" Brittany cheered, pulling away and doing a little twirl as she chanted "what to ask what to ask what to aaask!" Suddenly she froze on the spot, facing the girl, the look in her eyes full of wonder once more.
"I know," she said softly, "who proposes, in the end?"
Sugar pictured the scene her parents had described to her a million times before – the date they had the night after graduation, after they both found out they got into the same college; Santana for History, Brittany for dance. She pictures the McKinley High football field in perfect clarity for the first time, now that she's actually really seen it, and imagines what it must have been like, Santana driving them over here after a night out at Breadsticks, tugging on Brittany's hand until they were standing right at center field, whispering, "I fell in love with you here, 4 years ago. The first time I saw you in that uniform, that's when I guess I just knew, on some level, that you were everything to me. I just didn't know what that meant yet. You looked so carefree, and you were so good Britt, so good at what you do. And you're only going to get better…I want to be there to see you shine."
She pictured her Mama dropping to her knee, pulling a small red box out of her Cheerio's jacket, whispering I love you while Brittany laughed and cried, much like she had been doing only minutes before.
Sugar pictured all this, but all she did was smile.
"You'll find out soon enough, Mom. Sooner than you think…"
