She Runs

The way he behaves sometimes scares her. He has the ability to transform from a normal looking guy into a monster with a bumpy forehead and sharp teeth - within seconds. It's not normal. It's not human. That may be obvious, but when you're staring that kind of thing in the face, it seems like a very important bit of information.

She has told him that several times and has been rewarded by more concern and apologetic words than he should really be giving her given that she is pointing out something so blatantly obvious. He is a vampire. For him, the change from man to demonic being is normal. It's second nature. There is no reason for him to be so understanding and so quietly supportive of however she may react to him.

But still, even knowing he is a vampire and that he is a good one that won't rip out her throat, she feels a sense of anticipation every time they cross paths, and she wonders, willheturnintoavampiretonight?. She can't help it. Call it human instinct. A part of her doesn't trust him.

To trust what he is would be idiotic, but she has learned to trust her senses about people in general and she does feel safe around him. Other than the fact that he has not killed her and on a few occasions he has saved her life, she has no reason to, but she has the belief that he will be there for her if need be. He won't harm her. He is there to protect. His actions rather than his words make her believe it.

It's ridiculous to think it, knowing that he is a vampire. Vampires drink blood. Vampires hunt humans. Vampires and humans are mortal enemies. Do the math. However you phrase the question, the answer will always be bloody and final. To think that maybe he is an exception, maybe he won't try to drain the blood from her body, is odd and difficult to wrap her mind around. There is also the possibility of being caught in one of his dangerous cases and ending up in the crossfire.

Even disregarding the vampire thing, she can't think of any reason why she should trust him. He's a private investigator. He works by himself more or less, with just a few employees who don't quite seem like employee material hanging about. She has looked his files up and there's nothing that jumps out enough to set a firm opinion of him in her mind. Maybe that's merely because he was able to get someone to tamper his files for him, to keep his more prominent secret from being accidentally found out.

When it comes down to it, she doesn't know what to think about him. Her reading of him includes a mixture of contradictions and danger and a level of intimacy she's not sure she is ready to commit to, for a relationship of any sort with him means knowing things most people don't know exists and keeping secrets and fighting for the lives of you and your friends.

She isn't sure that it's worth it and so she runs.
