Chapter 13

xxxxx

"Fight!" said Kakashi to Hinata and Naruto.

The two charged and threw down smoke bombs at the same time. Hinata fought a couple of Naruto's Shadow Clones as the smoke cleared. Kakashi walked over to the Hanabi, pulled out his book and began reading.

"Hey," he said to Hanabi.

"Aren't you supposed to be the ref or something?" asked Hanabi.

"It'll be fine," said Kakashi.

The fight went on for five minutes. Hinata began panting and sweating at the fourth minute from continuously fighting Naruto's clones. She was not moving as fluid as she normally did.

"Something is wrong with sis," said Hanabi.

"You got those funky eyes," said Kakashi, turning a page in his book.

Hanabi activated her Byakugan. She squinted looking at her sister's chakra pathways.

"Why is she doing that? Scratch that! How is she doing that and still be moving?" gasped Hanabi.

"The why you'll see in a minute or two. As for the how. . .she's your sister," said Kakashi.

Hinata flipped a clone of Naruto into the air. She grabbed it as if fell and with a twist threw it into the second clone dispelling both. Hinata wiped the sweat from her face. She did not want to fight like she did during her second attempt at the Chunin Exams. She did figure out Naruto's strategy within the first minute. He used his smokescreen to dive underground. No boulders to hide behind or transform into. There he created clones to attack her while he remained safe to wear her out while he remained relatively safe. Better to have his clones wear her down than risk getting caught up in some Gentle Fist technique.

'Good, it is getting longer between each time he creates his clones and I cannot keep this up much longer without revealing my own plan. . .thank you Neji for teaching me that technique. Another thirty seconds should do it,' thought Hinata.

If Neji discovered one thing about his defeat at the first Chunin Exam and near death experience during the Sasuke Retrieval Mission was that he had to learn to adapt. He silently declared he would no longer be caught off guard by attacks that were difficult for the Hyuuga to counter. He first developed the Air Palm technique as a way attack ranged fighters which he and Hiashi are expanding into a duo attack called Air Wall. He also developed another attack that dealt with underground threats which Hinata now chose to use. Hinata focused chakra into her left arm and crouched down after thirty seconds.

"Gentle Fist: Earth Ripple Strike!" she yelled in a soft tone and striking the ground with her open palm.

The ground rippled and rose a foot in the air just as water doing the same as a stone is thrown into it. Hinata managed two ripples which was enough to knock Naruto up into the air. He landed on the ground in a heap and on his back.

"Ow," he moaned, slowly getting up.

Hinata clenched her right arm. She can do the technique but it hurt every time she used it. It felt like her whole arm was just getting its circulation back after being in a tourniquet for too long. She did what she always did and moved forward. Naruto shook the cobwebs and stars from his head and like Hinata refused to let the pain slow him down.

"Hinata, are you alright?" asked Naruto.

"How much chakra have you used?" panted Hinata, trying to get the feeling back into her arm.

"I dunno, probably about half which is more than enough," said Naruto, rubbing his lower back.

"Which mean your reserves are now like the rest of us. I only used ten to fifteen percent. Less if I had not used that move to get you out of the ground," said Hinata.

"But your Byakugan and Gentle Fist. That uses chakra," said Naruto.

The area around Hinata's eyes puffed with smoke. The smoke cleared showed the bulging veins and subtle shift of the active Byakguan in her eyes were gone. She rolled back her sleeves. Kunai strapped to her wrists. The blades sticking out far enough to be useful in a fight. Hinata's chakra became as steam exiting her chakra pathways as she slowly let her chakra flow normally throughout her body. She stopped sweating as her heartbeat and breathing became normal. Her skin turning back to its healthy pale white.

"You faked the whole thing and the memories of the pain my clones felt after being struck felt wrong. I thought it was a different type of Gentle Fist," said Naruto.

"I fought a kunoichi during my second attempt at the Chunin Exam finals. She bragged she possessed the same chakra reserves as a jonin or kage. I came up with this plan recalling your fight with Neji and how you relied on your massive reserves to wear down Neji. Right now you and I should be about equal with chakra," said Hinata.

"I get it. Did she have anything else in common with me?" asked Naruto, wanting to know if the kunoichi was a Bijuu Host.

"No. Just a lot of chakra for someone the same age as us," said Hinata.

"I guess the obvious tricks won't work with you," said Naruto

He looked around. There was nowhere to hide to resume the clone attack. Then he came up with a sudden idea and his trademark cunning smile crossed his face. He held out an arm palm up. Chakra in the air became visible and started to form in his open hand.

"Kakashi said no Rasenshuriken. He didn't say anything about the base form," said Naruto as the chaotic sphere of chakra formed his hand.

Hinata did not complain. If Naruto bent the rules then so would she. Hinata decided on Gentle Step Stage Duo commonly as Protective Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms. She removed the kunai strapped to her wrists and let them fall to the ground. She stood straight as a board and raised her right arm straight up. A beam of solid chakra extended from her wrist. Then Hinata moved her upper body at a such a fast rate she created afterimages. A solid blue dome formed within seconds.

"Here I come!" yelled Naruto.

"Stop them!" yelled Hanabi, afraid of what would happen if the two techniques collided.

"Stay put," sighed Kakashi, putting his book away. He created four Shadow Clones and gave them instructions. The clones vanished in a swirl of leaves.

Naruto dodged the chakra needles created by Hinata. Because Hinata's arm still hurt she was not as accurate as normal. Naruto was not fast because of his lower back. He gradually got closer to the dome. Ten inches Naruto saw an opening. Five inches Hinata willed herself to pick up speed to reinforce the dome's strength. Three inches, two, one inch from Rasengan touching Hinata's dome.

Arms erupted from the ground grabbing Naruto and Hinata by their legs and pulled them straight into the earth up to their necks The dome faded away and the Rasengan bounced along the ground and fell apart. Hinata and Naruto looked one another with shock.

"What happened?" asked Hinata.

"I have a good idea," growled Naruto knowing the one Leaf-nin who uses that jutsu.

"Yo," said Kakashi, crouching down between them.

"The fight was getting good!" yelled Naruto.

"You did realize I was kidding about maiming or killing each other. . .what can I say, I prefer my students and Hokages to have all their limbs intact," said Kakashi and whatever complaints Village Hero and Hokage had were dashed.

"Oops. Guess we kind of went overboard," chuckled Naruto.

"Sorry," muttered Hinata with embarrassment.

Kakashi smacked Naruto in the back of the head.

"Ow! What was that for?" demanded Naruto.

"You and Sasuke on the hospital roof or did you forget the tongue lashing you were given for being stupid," said Kakashi.

"To not go overboard while sparing against my fellow Leaf-nin," sighed Naruto.

Kakashi smacked Naruto again.

"Hey, I said I got it!" yelled Naruto.

"That was meant for Hinata. I can't hit her. She's the Hokage. 'sides, her father and cousin would kill me provided Kurenai doesn't lock me into one of her nastier genjutsus first," said Kakashi, getting up.

"At least get us out of here," said Naruto.

"Consider it a test from a verified Jonin Sensei. If a Village Hero and Hokage can't get out of a hole by their own power then they don't deserve the position or recognition they have," said Kakashi.

"Also your revenge against me for making you the Jonin Commander," said Hinata.

"And all the immature stuff I put you through," said Naruto.

"If you say so," said Kakashi not bothering to hide his eye smile.

Hanabi ran over to them. "You two alright?" she asked.

"Embarrassed," muttered Hinata.

"Have fun you two," said Kakashi.

"Wait. I need you to witness something," said Hanabi, grabbing Kakashi's shirt.

"Oh no," said Hinata seeing the wide smile on Hanabi's face.

"I'd be remiss in my duties as class clown and practical joker if I passed up an opportunity. Nobody will believe me when I tell them I got the Hokage and a legendary practical joker without a witness," said Hanabi, taking a magic marker from her pocket.

Hanabi tried writing on Naruto's face. He moved around too much.

"We can do this is the easy way or the hard way. Easy way is not moving at all. The hard way is that I numb your head so you can 't move," said Hanabi, activating her Byakugan to make the point.

"Can she do that?" Naruto asked Hinata.

"Yes."

"Do you know the kind of the trouble you're getting into. Your sister is the Hokage and I'm the last person you want to prank," warned Naruto.

"The second rule of pranking is always be prepared to pay the consequences and I'm more than ready," smiled Hanabi, beginning to write on Naruto's face then moved onto Hinata.

"And there we go," said Hanabi, putting her marker away.

"Nasty. I think you just outdid Naruto when he tagged Mount Hokage. Hanabi, go stand over there. I need to talk to these unfortunate souls for a second," said Kakashii.

"Time to be serious," said Kakashi. "Out of concern for Naruto's condition and privacy we tiptoed around the truth in front of Hanabi."

Naruto flinched out of fear of being hated because he is a Bijuu Host.

"Better to hear it from Naruto than from other people now that the secret is out," said Hinata.

"And it's Naruto's decision no matter what," said Kakashi.

"Better from the source. Been on the wrong end of some nasty rumors. Still don't who started that one about me eating babies came from and if I ever find out they're going to regret it," said Naruto.

"That bad?" asked Hinata.

"Ever hear the rumors about mobs always chasing Naruto around the village trying to hurt or kill him?" asked Kakashi.

"Yes, although I never knew why until my team was told the truth," said Hinata.

"Anyone who tried to start to a mob were punished when you were newborns. It was a public message to the villagers to not be that stupid. It came down to Naruto being ignored, insulted, and of course being put through the Kohona Rumor Mill & Grapevine. Halfway through Naruto's second shot at the Academy is when the baby eating rumors began and a mob was formed. An undercover ANBU was placed into the group as they planned to attack Naruto at his apartment. They reached Naruto's apartment and were arrested the moment they broke down the front door. Instead of finding Naruto they came face to face with an apartment full of ANBU. You were spending the afternoon with the Hokage," said Kakashi.

"He protected me from real threats," said Naruto, having a sudden epiphany about randomly spending most of a day with Hiruzen

"From inside and outside the village. You know your parents had a lot of enemies. A few outsiders saw you while in the village on legitimate or not so legitimate reasons put two and two together when they randomly saw you. Things like that were the reason why every so often you spent most of a day with the Sandaime. . .and yes, I knew your parents and before either of you ask or make it an order I won't answer. Tsunade had to be told and demanded that Jiraiya and I tell you or she would. Things almost got physical if cooler heads in the room hadn't prevailed. Hinata, stop trying to figure it out cause I can see the gears in your head turning. The professional issues outweigh the personal and as much as I hate it more than you can imagine its potentially a bigger mess than Naruto being a Bijuu Host if word gets out. Hinata will be told if her position becomes permanent," said Kakashi.

Hinata just nodded. She had her own plan to find out the truth about Naruto's parents. Tenten and Lee found out who their parents were and what happened to them. The vast majority of orphans in Kohona are told the truth at some point. Hinata reasoned if she could not find out during her time as Hokage then Naruto will never find out unless he becomes Hokage and her natural political mind could not calculate when he will get the job.

"There's a small pond a quarter mile to the east. You can wash up there before telling her the truth," said Kakashi, disappearing in swirl of leaves.

It took three minutes for Hinata and Naruto to get out of the hole. Another five to resist the urge to kill Hanabi for laughing at them. They took Hanabi to the pond. She stood a healthy distance from the pond afraid Naruto would throw her in.

"There is a matter we need to talk about," said a now serious Hinata to Hanabi.

"Okay."

Naruto took a couple of deep breaths to calm down. He still felt guilty for not telling Team 8 and letting Kakashi do it. The fear and shame had been too much. Tsunade and Kakashi told him it was alright. Naruto knew it was not. He decided afterwards to never put the burden on anyone else.

"As you know the Kyubi attacked the village at around the time Hinata-sama and I were born," said Naruto.

"And we are taught the Fourth Hokage sacrificed his life and killed the Nine Tails," said Hanabi.

"Only part of that is true. The Nine Tails, or any Bijuu, can't be killed like other life. Their bodies are pure chakra and they'll reform sooner or later. The only choice was to ram the Nine-Tails into some poor slob," said Naruto.

"And you were the slob. I already know," said Hanabi.

"Who told you?" demanded Hinata. Even though the secret is now out it did not excuse past transgressions of openly talking about it or telling those who did not know.

"Calm down, sis. Nauto-kun kind of told me," said Hanabi.

"I never spoke to you about it," said Naruto.

"When you fought Neji. At some point he and all the Kohona adults in the arena had a giant freak out. Even I had one. I think that was the first time I've ever been scared for my life," said Hanabi.

"Naruto-san?" asked Hinata.

"The plan was to use burn through my normal chakra then use what I could draw from the Furball to use as a back up and to force open any chakra points Neji closed," said Naruto.

"That sounds. . .dangerous," said Hinata.

"Jiraiya-sensei did a small tweak to the seal on my stomach. It was a one time thing to help me. Still don't know how your sister figured it out," said Naruto.

"Hello! Three fourth genius here!" sighed Hanabi. "I didn't get it right away. It took me almost a year to figure out."

"And did you tell anyone else?" asked Hinata, in her do not lie to me voice.

Hanabi felt a whole different fear. Hinata did not play favorites and that includes family.

"Just father when I realized the truth and later the Hokage who warned me that my age will not protect me from breaking the laws. Anyway I started with the fight. I knew something was very wrong with Naruto-kun. Then I asked around and was given the cold shoulder. Then I shifted to what everyone knew about him. Found out the village hated him even though nobody would say why. Heard mutterings of monster or demon. Then I discovered his birthday and everything else clicked," said Hanabi.

"And what did you think?" asked Naruto now nervous.

"Surprised at first. It did explain why out of all of the village's practical jokers you were treated the worst for as easy as you went on everyone. I think the Red Haberino was treated better than you after what she did," said Hanabi.

"The who?" asked Hinata.

"The most legendary of practical jokers. What I did to Mount Hokage still doesn't compare to what she did. She somehow managed to paint all the buildings and Mount Hokage in the brightest neon pink you can imagine. Legend has it not even the Hokage's Tower was safe" said Naruto.

"I realized Naruto couldn't be this monster everyone said he was. He knocked some sense into Neji and made pops see how badly he goofed things up. So Naruto-chan is okay by me," said Hanabi, slapping Naruto on the back.

"Gee, thanks. . .I think," grunted Naruto still sore after he hurt his back from landing wrong.

"I better get going before dad sends out the clan to find me," said Hanabi, running off.

"She's not like any other Hyuga," said Naruto.

"Mother named her well," said Hinata.

"Explosive or something like that?" asked Naruto.

"Fireworks."

"Uh-huh. . .and what did that bundle of fireworks put on my back?" asked Naruto.

"A seal with the word paint on it. It's building up chakra and will go off in a few seconds," said Hinata, taking the seal off and throwing it away from them. It exploded in a color of bile and puke.

"She's digging that hole deeper and deeper," said Naruto.

"Promise you will go easy on her," said Hinata.

"The only promise I make about practical jokes is the promise to prank someone," said Naruto.

Hinaat sighed as they left the Hokage's Private Training Grounds and headed back to hole that used to be Kohona.

Author's Notes - Originally I planned this chapter to be like this. During the writing of this chapter, I watched on Toonami a post Pain attack/pre-fourth war filler episode where Kohonamaru challenged Temari for some stupid reason. I realized that Kohonamaru could challenge Hinata for the Hokage position so I rewrote the chapter. Kohonamaru makes the challenge during the scene with Tazuna and Inari. Hinata instantly agrees to the shock of everyone including Kohonamaru who was always distracted by Hiruzen with a 'shiny new toy' or given an impossible task first by Tsunade. Tsunade told the boy that before she would fight him, he had to squeeze a solid metal sphere hard enough to put a dent in it. The sphere is made out of the same material as Asuma's Trench Knives and Tsunade uses the sphere as a 'stress ball'.

Before this fight began Hinata asked Kakashi for the condition of victory being an unconditional surrender and the loser has to do what the winner says. The fight is the same as the one in this with a couple of differences. The first one is that when Hinata knocked Kohonmaru out of the ground, Kohonamaru tried to charged up a Rasengan. . .'tried' being the key word because Hinata didn't wait around and attacked him head on while suppressing her chakra like in this chapter. Kohonamaru threw down a bright flash bomb that greatly affects an active Byukugan like a bright light affects night vision goggles. Kohonmaru tried to punch Hinata only to have Hinata catch his fist. She tells Kohonamaru that at some point the Hyuga are trained to deal with those kind of tactics.

Kohonamaru tries to kick Hinata in the ribs but she refuses to let go although he did crack a couple of her ribs. Hinata stops suppressing her chakra and begins channeling her chakra into Kohonamaru warning him he better surrender. He believes she is bluffing but 'a shock or two' later he surrenders. Hinata tells him the condition for surrender is that he can never challenge another Hokage for the position except for Naruto when he becomes Hokage because they made a promise based on their shared Nindo. Hinata explains that people who directly challenge the Hokage tend not to be 'nice people' by any stretch of the imagination(Orochimaru challenging Minato and Madara challenging Hashirama). Kohonmaru realizes he has no choice but to agree because Hinata won't let up.

Kohonamaru believed Hinata would be easy pickings because he defeated one of the Pain Bodies and Hinata was almost killed by another. Hinata coldly reminds him the Body that nearly killed her did defeat Naruto and almost captured him. She also tells Kohonamaru that while he shares the Nindo with her and Naruto, he has very little else in common with them. Where as Kohonamaru had family that loved and cared for him, Hinata's immediate family loathed her and Naruto had none since the day he was born. Kohonamaru was given breaks because of his status as a Sarutobi and being Hiruzen's grandson. Hinata and Naruto had to work their butts off to earn everything. Hinata and Naruto had to prove to everyone they were not the monster(Naruto) and/or complete failure everyone said they were, everyone thought highly of Kohonamaru. . .and so on and so on.

So why didn't I use this fight? Because Hinata came off as (puts money into Swear Envelope) 'bitchy' toward Kohonamaru as she lectured him. It was completely an utterly OOC of her and even trying to justify such an attitude for a future part of the story still didn't make it seem right. If Hinata is going to be like then there has to be a good reason and having Kohonamaru thinking he had it just as bad as Hinata and Naruto or that he could easily defeat her didn't feel right. I changed my mind and once again rewrote the chapter and it became this one.

As for Hanabi, how can she not be a younger female version of Naruto? In a lot of anime/manga a character's name seems to come down to 'If the name fits. . .' which somehow reflects their attitude or circumstances. Hanabi means 'Fireworks' so why not make her a practical joker. But not any practical joker that tends to be a Dead Last/Low Grade student in the academy. According to the Data Books/Naruto Wiki dealing with this point of the overall saga she has potential to be a full prodigy/genius. As mentioned last chapter, "She has a brain and isn't afraid to use it."

Now for the Giant Summon in the Room called Hinata vs. Naruto. My choices were to make half the readers/Naruto fans angry if I let Hinata win. I also figured the opposite would be true. So me being me and not being afraid to piss off ALL the fans/readers for the sake of the story decided to force a draw. No one wins, no one loses and I was able to throw in some slapstick humor at their expense to boot.

Dang, this is the longest Author's Note that I ever wrote. . .

I'll shut up now.
