Derek POV
It'd been too long since I held my wife in my arms. Far far too long since I'd been able to suck in a deep breath from her strawberry scented hair, I'd spent the last two years traveling across the many states helping my father locate any lost teenagers with supernatural abilities. The kids we'd helped ranged from sorcerers, half-demons and even a few shape changers here and there.
"Are you happy to be headed back home?" Gwen asked from the front seat beside my father. She was the same age as Chloe 23 years old only a few months younger then my mate. She was a shape changer we'd helped out around a year ago and two of us had bonded over the mutual need to return to the one we love the most, the difference was that my mate knew what I was, loved me more for it and even married me. Gwen's mate was someone she had to leave behind in her small town, something I knew killed her on the inside because it killed me the day I told Chloe I had to leave.
"You have no idea." I replied staring out the window of the car, "I can't wait to hold her in my arms." I had no idea what exactly I was in-store for when I returned home.
I'm so tired of being here
Suppressed by all my childish fears
And if you have to leave
I wish that you would just leave
'Cause your presence still lingers here
And it won't leave me alone
Chloe POV
Derek was returning home today or maybe it was tomorrow, I guess it depended on who was driving and how the weather was. I knew I should be ecstatic to have this news to be able to see the man I loved after two years of being apart and talking occasionally on the phone, however a part of me dreaded his return. It meant I would have to explain the toddler wandering around the house her eyes looking at everything with those sharp green eyes I used to stare into every night.
"So have you thought about what you're going to say?" Tori asked as she sat beside me on the floor just outside the play pen that my daughter was stumbling around in.
"Totally." I lied and she pulled me in to lean on her. She'd been my biggest support since I gave birth to my little girl, "I was thinking about being honest I guess. You know they always say all relationships are based on honesty."
"Oh right sure, how about Derek when you left I was pregnant and I was going to tell you when I passed the first trimester." Tori offered and I grimaced,
"Cause it's been a two year long first trimester?" I joked and she shrugged,
"Guess that doesn't work." We laughed together causing my daughter to jump and fall beginning the tears and wailing I'd become accustomed to in the past few years.
"Honestly Tori I don't know what to tell him." I reached into the play area lifting my little girl into my arms making sure I kept the I.V attached to her arm at the same time, "I never know how long I have with her." I finished kissing the top of her shiny little head. She looked up at me with emerald green eyes her tiny cherry blonde curls hanging around her face contrasting against the dark skin she got from her father.
"It's too late to tell him anything." Simon's voice said from behind me, he'd kept my secret for me but he hadn't agreed to it. We hadn't gotten along since the moment he found out I was pregnant and wasn't telling Derek. "You've already betrayed him and you've made us all go along with it." He scowled at me his eyes softening slightly when he looked at the little one in my arms.
"Simon just get out." Tori muttered not looking up from where she was neatly rearranging all the toys and stuffed animals in the baby proofed play zone set up in the small living room. Kissing my little girls head again I set her back down in the area excusing myself to use the rest room letting Tori watch over her.
"It's ok," Tori shushed her as she began to cry, "Auntie Tori is here see." I watched as Tori made funny faces bringing my babies lips into a cute curly smile.
These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase
I heard them arrive before I even saw them. I heard the car pull into the driveway the thumping of car doors and whirring of the hatchback lifting up to allow them to grab their bags. A big part of me wanted to run at the door, rush out and fling myself into his waiting arms. I knew that was what he wanted as well, at least it will be until he finds out what I've hidden from him.
"To guilty to go out and greet him hey." Simon's voice dripped with anger as he passed me in the hallway heading for the door I was trying to avoid.
"Your right Simon, I do feel guilty." I snapped at him, "a guilt that has eaten me away since the day I made that decision but that decision was mine. I got to decide what to do not you and you can't fault me for it. I did what I thought was right, it wasn't like he could come rushing back home so yes I saved him from feeling the pain I feel every day and instead I get to feel both." I felt a sense of relief as his face dropped the smug act he'd had on for the past two years and took on this shocked look that I'd just bitched him out but he deserved it. We were in the middle of staring each other down when the front door swung open and my name was called into the house vibrating through the rooms.
"Derek." His voice slid off my lips like honey and I felt my lips tug up into a smile. I tried to ignore the pissed off look on Simon's face as he turned around to face his brother.
"Hey bro." He said reaching in for a hug which was gladly accepted by my husband all the while he was staring at me over Simon's shoulder.
"Hey." He replied pulling out of the hug and dropping his bag on the floor, "are you going to hang back there or come over here?" He asked giving me a grin that two years ago would've had me removing all my clothing for him.
"That really depends on the next few minutes." I replied quietly knowing that he'd pick up every word I said with his super hearing. He raised an eyebrow at me as I looked to my left to see Tori gently lifting my daughter out of her play pen. I watched as she struggled to get the machine that basically ran my life out of the netting it was stuck in, "Tori I'll help." I called to her sending a small smile to my husband before walking into the living room.
"No, you and Derek catch up I'll watch the little one. She's being an angel today, aren't you sweetheart." Tori cooed down at her and she giggled reaching up towards me, "see what you've done. I always manage to make her like me and then you show up and it's all about Mama." I reached down moving the wires gently out of the threading keeping her enclosed in the play pen handing then one by one to Tori to hold.
"It's easier to do it one at a time, plus usually your here to help or Rae. I doubt I could get her in and out by myself." I told her reaching in to lift her out of the pen after we'd managed to remove the fluid and wires that kept the blood running through my daughters body. "We couldn't do this by ourselves could we honey." I whispered into my daughters ear kissing the top of her silky hair as she reached out gripping mine in her hands.
When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me
Derek POV
I watched as Chloe left the room to assist Tori and looked over at Simon who was avoiding eye contact with me.
"What was that!" I exclaimed looking from my brother to where my wife was standing moments before, "I walk in and the two of you are fighting and she won't even give me a hug to welcome me home?" I moved around the corner of the stairs heading for the doorway to the livingroom where my wife just disappeared into. I was about to turn the corner when Simon caught my arm pulling me back.
"Don't." He whispered looking down at the floor, "don't be mad 'kay?" He said again and I felt the fuel of anger rise in my stomach. If he even tried to utter the words that I most didn't want to hear I would kick his ass brother or not.
"Did you sleep with my wife?" I growled out trying to hold back the disgust, anger and rage that was building inside of me. Wanting to tear it's way out much like my own inner wolf,
"What! No! Really Derek just no!" Simon exclaimed pulling his hands back and holding them up, "I'd never do that! In fact I'm pissed with Chloe right now okay we haven't been on good terms since you left!"
"That was two years ago." I replied and he nodded,
"We're not friends." He replied, "because she made a decision that I think should have involved you and I didn't agree with what she decided but she made me promise not to tell you."
"Did she...did she try to divorce me?" I asked the words coming up like vinegar in my throat and he shook his head,
"What no!"
"Then what is it!" I demanded and he pulled me around the corner of the room. There standing on the other side of the room was my sister Tori staring up at my wife or more directly the little baby in my wifes arms. "She adopted a kid?" I whispered looking at the child in my wifes arms I realized that it wasn't so bad, did I want to be a father. Not really but if Chloe wanted to be a mother then I would support her and our child.
"The babies not adopted." Simon replied and I moved into the room causing both Chloe and Tori to look at me. Their eyes were as big as saucers and the small child turned around to look up at me, staring back at me with the same eyes I see everyday in the mirror. It was my child.
"What?" I muttered, "how?" I said again looking from the child to my wife. The baby didn't look any older then eight months the child was small, skinny almost frail to the touch. She had my eyes and as I looked closer she seemed to have a darker tint to her skin like my own but there sitting on top of her head was the strawberry blonde curls of my wife.
"Did you want to hold her?" Chloe asked and I looked from the child to Chloe.
"How?" I asked again and she sighed looking at Tori and Simon who seemed to get a clue and left the room.
"Two years ago." She replied, "remember the night before you left?" She asked and I couldn't help but grin.
"Who could forget." I teased her and she blushed a deep red, "but the kids so small for two years old." After I spoke I noticed what I had missed before. The small wires that made their way up under the little girls shirt, the small tube that exited from her left arm up into a bag held about a foot above her mothers head.
"She's got a heart condition." Chloe replied her voice soft, "they didn't think she'd make it past one." Her eyes glazed over with tears as she stared down at the little girl in her arms.
"What's her name?" I asked reaching out to brush some of the curls out of my daughters hair. My daughter. That felt so exhilarating to think about, but also confusing when I thought about it, I hadn't expected to return home to a daughter.
"Cherry." Chloe whispered looking up at me, "you once told me you really liked cherries so when she was born her hair reminded me of cherries." She told me the story and I felt my heart rip in two. In the few minutes I had met my child I knew that she had gripped my heart completely with her little hands, but I also felt that with so little time to get to know her I had been robbed of the life she'd already had.
"It suites her." I said reaching with my hands to gently lift her up into my arms, "my little Cherub." I whispered looking out of the corner of my eye I saw Chloe smile.
You used to captivate me by your resonating light
Now I'm bound by the life you left behind
Your face, it haunts my once pleasant dreams
Your voice, it chased away all the sanity in me
I was furious with Chloe, that much I knew but the small child in my arms prevented me from actually being angry with her. Those bright green eyes looked up into my won and she squealed with joy her tiny hand reaching up towards me.
"She recognizes his eyes." Tori said with a laugh, "I guess I show her the mirror to much." We were all sitting in the living room, at least most of us were. Simon lingered by the door glaring at me. At least I preferred it to be me and not the small child that hadn't gotten a single choice in the matter, it wasn't like she told Chloe not to tell me. It wasn't her fault she was born with CHD.
"She's a happy baby." My dad spoke up from beside me reaching his finger in to tickle her belly, "how much longer does she have to live?" He asked and I looked at Chloe whose face fell at the thought of losing our daughter.
"She wasn't supposed to make it past one. I think its the werewolf genes inside her trying to heal the problem but it's not like the genes can fix the way her heart is defective." She sighed, "but because she's been pulling through shes not priority on the transplant list." She reached out then running her hand over Cherry's hair.
"So you don't know." My dad asked and Chloe shook her head,
"Everyday someone watches her, just in case." Tori finished reaching her hand out to hold Chloe's giving while giving me a sad smile.
"She's tired, she's been fairly active all day." Chloe said before moving to clean up the living room, "we should take her to bed." She told me waving at me to follow her. I stood up pulling the wires up with me and Tori dived out to stop the machine from falling.
"Shit! Sorry." I said as Tori stood up handing the machine to Chloe who smiled at me,
"Don't worry we've all been there." She said as she check to make sure nothing got unplugged while leading me upstairs. We walked into our room where I saw the small crib was pulled up next to Chloe's side of the bed, a table was arranged nearby to hold the small handheld machine that kept my daughters heart pumping blood through her body. I waited patiently as Chloe set the machine down carefully winding the wires through the bars to where I placed our little girl. Once she was down I brushed my hand over her curls before leaning down to gently kiss her forehead.
"Don't get me wrong," I said as I walked over to the closet, "I'm furious with you." I told her reaching into the closet to pull out something to wear to bed.
"I know." She whispered her clothes creating a soft thump on the ground where she discarded them.
"I don't want to have this conversation tonight." I told her sighing as I laid down on the bed, "I'm too exhausted to be angry with you." She nodded at me gingerly crawling into bed beside me leaving a good foot between our bodies.
"I missed you." She said holding her hand out to me and I stared at it.
"Yeah." I said turning my back towards her, "yeah I did too." I finished staring at the blue walls of our bedroom, walls that had been purple before I'd left. So much had changed around here, my wife had a baby, our baby who was going to die any day now and I hadn't even gotten to know her. She had become close with my sister, a sister I had only found out about a year before I had to leave, the walls that we'd painted purple three years ago were now a light blue reminding me of her eyes. The eyes that shimmered like the sunset on an ocean the day of our wedding. I closed my eyes wanting to forget it all, wishing it had been a dream and that tomorrow I would arrive home to my wife. To purple walls, a short cute happy wife and continue into our life together, to make decisions about our kids together.
These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase
When I woke I was awoken by the sounds of a baby crying. I glanced over my shoulder to see Chloe stir awake sitting up and reaching out to comfort our child, it was then that I noticed the bags under her eyes and the dry lines of a tear stained face. She lifted our daughter into her arms shushing her and brushing her hands through her short strawberry curls,
"It's okay Cherry." She whispered kissing her forehead, "were going to be okay. Daddy's here." She finished leaning back against the bed, "he's here." She repeated and I turned my head back to face the wall.
"Chloe." I spoke up feeling bed move as she jumped at the sound of my voice, "I could've been here a long time ago."
"She might not have survived the first week." She whispered back and I turned around to face her pulling myself up to sit beside her moving my leg to gently brush hers.
"And gone through that pain alone?" I asked looking her dead in the eye, "when she died would you have called me then? Would you have told me she existed? Did you ever think how upset I would be if I had found out we had a child but then she died!" I exclaimed reaching out to run my fingers softly through her hair.
"I don't know." She whispered, "I knew what you were doing was important, I didn't think that coming back here to a dying child was as important because there is nothing you can do to help her."
"I know that!" I snapped taking a deep breath to calm my anger, "it's not about helping her Chloe. It's about you. I want to be there for you, through sickness and health." I replied pulling her closer to my side.
"You mad at me because I didn't call you to play the damsel in distress card!" She argued, "I'm not a damsel anymore Derek. I can take care of myself."
"I know that, but can't I also take care of you?" I asked and she looked up into my eyes, those blue eyes filled with guilt. "I want to be there for you Chlo." I whispered burying my face into her hair.
"I know." She replied, "I'm sorry I just didn't know what to do. I wanted to tell you but then you would've come home and sat here beside me watching and waiting for our daughter to die. I didn't want that for you." I closed my eyes picturing Chloe alone, going through this and I just wanted to die on the inside every part of my being telling me I'd failed my mate. That I hadn't been good enough.
"I feel like I've failed you." I whispered and she reached up running her hand through my hair resting it on my cheek.
"You didn't." She insisted and I smiled at her, "I wanted to protect you this time." She whispered and I nodded completely understood where she was coming from because every day we were on the run all I wanted to do was protect her.
"We need to stop protecting each other and try to work with each other." I told her reaching down to trace my daughters face.
When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me
I woke up the next morning looking beside me to see my beautiful wife who was passed out cold her chest rising and falling slightly with her breathing. She looked beautiful with her hair framing her petite face. I was consumed in staring at her when I heard a little gurgle of a laugh, I looked over to the baby cradle to see Cherry sitting upright. She was watching me her eyes a darker green then yesterdays flecks of gold circled in her iris and I smiled at her.
"Hey baby," I whispered reaching over to ruffle her hair stopping when she wrapped her hands around my own her little fingers grasping as tight as she could the muscles bulging as if they were working hard, "strong grip kiddo." I teased knowing that I could easily pull my hand out but my comment made her laugh and I couldn't help but laugh with her.
"Derek?" Chloe muttered my name reaching up to hold onto my arm pulling herself up into a sitting position, "oh good morning Cherry." She said when she noticed our daughter was awake.
"Morning." I said leaning over to kiss her cheek, "breakfast time?" I asked my girls, one seemed pleased at the idea the other nodded silently with a big yawn.
"Not eggs." Chloe said running her hands through Cherry's hair, "she doesn't do well with eggs." I nodded stepping out of bed and pulling some pants on before headed down to the kitchen.
I walked into the kitchen to find Simon sipping his coffee at the bar top reading a book on law.
"Law?" I asked and Simon looked up at me nodding,
"We're going to need a good lawyer in the group when these kids get arrested." He teased and I grinned
"They're a handful eh." I replied opening the fridge to pull out sausages, bacon and butter, "want some breakfast?"
"Yeah." He replied a thump following as he closed his book, "are you mad?"
"About Cherry?" I asked as I turned the element on, "angry is the wrong word. I'm upset, I wish she'd told me but I understand why she didn't."
"Are you mad at me?" He asked and I turned around to smile at him,
"No. You only did what she asked, apparently not very kindly." I added and he leaned back in his chair, "you were just supporting me from afar well respecting my wife's decision. Honestly Simon it's nice to know you always have my back."
"That's what brothers do." He replied and I nodded agreeing.
"Morning losers." Tori's voice called into the room, "glad you two have talked that over, maybe now you'll actually hold you niece." She gave Simon a venomous look and Simon shrugged.
"Not sure she likes me." He said and I pulled the plates out of the cupboard as they argued.
"Well you were glaring at her yesterday." I spoke up, "if I was a kid I don't think I'd like the person who glared at me all the time."
"I only glared at her for you." Simon argued and Tori rolled her eyes as I handed Simon a plate of food,
"The first moment he met her he held her, you just don't like kids." I loaded the other plates carrying them into the living room where I could here Chloe talking with Cherry.
"Food." I said holding it out to her and she smiled.
We were half way done our dinner when I heard it, the off putting sound of a dull thud. My werewolf hearing picked it up first as I only heard two hearts beating as one, and then the large noise of shrilling beep filled the room.
I was already at the play pen by the time Chloe reacted I pulled the pen off tossing it to my left out of the way. I pulled Cherry into my arms and heard Chloe call for Tori.
I've tried so hard to tell myself that you're gone
But though you're still with me
I've been alone all along
The day had gone by in a blur.
I remember being on the phone with the ambulance gently using my two fingers to keep my daughters heart pumping blood through her body until the paramedics arrived a few minutes later. I remember Chloe crying but I was too concentrated on the little baby to hear her cries and was thankful when Tori pulled her into an embrace. I remember Simon moving in beside them and running his hand through her hair in hopes to calm her down. I remember the front door slamming open and the paramedics rushing into the room, I remember Simon and Tori dragging Chloe out of the room because they were in the way. I remember being loaded into the ambulance with a quieter wife, her face tear streaked but she seemed to have pulled herself together. I remember feeling relieved when the paramedics told me to sit down and wait the ride through.
Simon and Tori had run into the hospital fifteen minutes after we'd arrived the paramedics had rushed out daughter through trauma into pediatrics and she was now on her way to the E.R. Chloe was completely quiet her hand clenched in front of her, her face twisting in pain as she stared blankly and quietly ahead of her. She hadn't said a word since this morning.
Surgery was long, quiet and no information was shared with any of us. We sat in a line as more of our family showed up and joined us in waiting. We stood around blankly, sometimes we were handed coffee, Chloe had a collection of three, none of which had even been opened. I reached out and pulled her in to lean against me,
"It's been a stressful day." I whispered in her ear, "why don't you take a nap." I suggested and I felt her body relax in my arms.
"I can't." She whispered back, "I can't until I know she's okay." I nodded getting up and walking over to the counter I stood there for a few minutes before the woman at the desk looked up at me jumping in her seat.
"Hello Sir how can I help you?" She asked smiling up at me politely and I leaned down to speak with her,
"My daughter she was taking into emergency care, I want to know how she's doing my wife is freaking out." She nodded spinning around in her chair to grab onto a file,
"What's her name?"
"Cherry." I replied and she looked up at me waving her hand for a last name,
"Cherry Jennifer Souza." Tori's voice cut in and I smiled at her thankfully, "she's barely two years old."
"Okay I'll give the doctor a call and they will send someone down to let you know how she's doing."
We waited another twenty minutes before a doctor exited the elevator and started over to us pausing in front of Chloe who smiled politely up at him,
"Doctor Turner." Chloe greeted him,
"Ms. Souza, I wish I could say it was good to see you but under the circumstances," He paused and I reached my hand out to shake his, "you must be the father."
"Derek," I replied nodding my head at him and he moved to pull a chair up between us.
"Cherry's heart has been through a lot of trauma over the past few years, we never thought she would hold on this long," he informed us and Chloe reached out taking my hand, "but the time I've been preparing you for is here Chloe. It's time to say goodbye to your daughter." I pulled Chloe into my arms as she closed her eyes nodding her head tears sneaking out past her eyes.
"O-okay." She whispered and I kissed the top of her head, "when-when can I see her?"
"She's in this room." He said passing me a card, "you can go whenever you're ready." He nodded at me before leaving us to the swarms of our family asking every question in the book.
When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me
All of me... me... me...
"She looks so peaceful." Chloe commented running her hands through our daughters curls again. We'd entered the room together to say goodbye to our daughter alone, the chords around her kept her alive the tube down her throat obscuring her cute little face.
"Chloe, I want to be a father." I told her wrapping my arms around her waist, "it might be bad timing and I know that we are parents but I don't want this to stop us from having another child." I kissed the top of her head and she looked up at me.
"Will they be healthy?" She asked reaching out to take our daughters hand, "I don't think I can live through this again."
"We'll manage and if you really that scared we can always adopt."
"Yeah like that will make sense, welcome to running around the world because your parents are freaks." I laughed a little at that leaning down to kiss Cherry's head before pulling away and sitting in the chair. Chloe and I waited for over two hours as everyone came and left saying their goodbyes and giving us their remorse, maybe it was wrong but I sat there nodding my head. Looking at my little girl I knew that our next child would always grow up knowing about their older sister the fighter. Chloe would make the best mother, I would work my hardest to compare to the type of parent she was here today shaking everyone's hand and thanking them for coming and for supporting her.
When everyone had finally left she collapsed in my arms her eyes never leaving our baby,
"Goodbye." She whispered as the nurse reached out and took her off life support. We sat there with her for the next ten minutes before the sound of the machine began and was turned off quickly by the nurse who sent us her remorse before leaving the room.
"Blossom." Chloe whispered, "if we have another girl I want to name her Blossom."
A/N: Hey ya'll I know it's been a while so I wanted to say hi and I'm glad you're all supporting me and my writing currently. I hope you understood why this story was so sad. The song itself is sad and I didn't want to repeat a past One-Shot where Chloe or Derek are dying. I hope Cherry added an extra layer to this story and that you understood why Chloe choose the name Blossom for her next daughter. If not you can PM and I'll tell you.
Thanks for reading Raksha Souza
