Just a little something, in honor of Severus and Lily (a pairing I don't normally like to ship, but I just couldn't help myself this time!).

Flicker

By silver-nightstorm

Summary: As he poured more of the amber liquid into the crystalline goblet, his vision blurred and he sank into memories – memories of a girl with auburn hair and lively green eyes.

The wineglass was very beautiful. It was crystal – a gift from Professor Dumbledore celebrating ten years in service – and perfectly faceted to reflect as much light as possible. The mulled amber liquid that was being gently swirled in the glass was also reflecting the meager light provided by the dimly flickering fire. The owner of the glass (and the liquid within said glass) sat morosely in a luxurious velvet loveseat, staring into the depths of the flames under the mantle, the orange blaze reflecting in his black eyes.

The man – early thirties, gaunt, sallow – shook his head so more of his thin strands of hair fell into his eyes. Swirling the amber liquid around once more, he tilted his head back and drank the contents of the glass in one gulp. Holding back a choking cough, he cleared his throat roughly and reached for the green-glass bottle on the ivory table in front of him.

His profile stood out starkly before the red glow of the fire; high cheekbones, aristocratic lips, aquiline nose; he could have been handsome. But the wear of the years shone deeply upon this man. He had seen too much. He was hardly a young man, per se, but he still was young. He was still much too young to witness the horrors he had seen.

As he poured more of the amber liquid into the crystalline goblet, his vision blurred and he sank into memories – memories of a girl with auburn hair and lively green eyes.

The clock struck twelve.

Dong!

He stared morosely into his goblet.

Dong!

Red hair.

Dong!

Green eyes.

Dong!

Her smile.

Dong!

Her frown.

Dong!

Her laugh.

Dong!

Her friendship.

Dong!

Her joy.

Dong!

Her.

Dong!

He downed the glass.

Dong!

"Happy Halloween."

Dong!

The flames continued to flicker.

Well, I haven't written in a while so I thought I should write something. Sadly said "something" was less-than-stellar. I'm going to be gone this month for NaNoWriMo, but I'll be back after, I promise! :)
