Marilyn stared at the monitor for a moment after the call with Bridger had ended. Bridger. Nathan Bridger. He had been her idol in the academy. The officer she had wanted to one day become. The man she had wanted to love. She'd taken the captaincy of Seaquest simply because it brought her closer to him. It would hurt her to see him die, but she was past the point of caring. Long gone was the naïve young girl in love with her instructor and in her place stood a cold-hearted woman. A killer. She knew now that they would never be together. When she'd heard about his wife she had allowed herself a momentary hope that one day, someday they could be together. Those thoughts died with one conversation. She saw him now not as the powerful man she had loved but a weak old fool unworthy of her devotion. The stark contrast between the two men was gut-retching. She gave one last fleeting thought to her love for him and promptly returned to her quest to destroy his beloved ship.
