"Hi"
Maddy Shannon looks up from the fruit in her hand, a wide involuntary smile taking over her face before she can remind herself not to come off too eager. "Hi Sergeant Reynolds"
"Mark," He says with a smile, his pretty ice blue eyes crinkling at the corners.
She rolls the name in her head, it's strong like him. She likes it. She moves over on the bench she is sitting on, happy when he takes the hint and sits down next to her. She watches as he places his weapon down next to him. His feet crossed as he stretches out, he places his arm across the back of the bench and she's hyper aware that it's behind her now, as she sits back she can feel the warmth of his skin against her own.
She studies him from under her eyelashes, he's the picture of relaxation, but as she watches him scanning the area they are in, his eyes pausing on the market a few feet away she knows he's looking for any possible trouble. He's young most likely only a couple years older than her fifteen but he's a solider through and through, he reminds her of her father always on alert.
"How's it going on agricultural detail?"
She gives him a questioning glance surprised that he knows that she's been helping out with the crops and plant life. "How did you…?"
He lifts his hand from behind her, his fingertips brushing over her skin leaving goose bumps in their wake until he reaches her cheek. She's sure she is bright red as his thumb slides over her cheekbone.
"Dirt," He murmurs softly his eyes locking with hers as his hand lingers.
If she wasn't blushing before she knows she is now as she remembers she has spent all morning in the dirt and she probably looks it.
"I must look horrible," She tries to play off, her hands going to smooth out her hair.
"Horrible," Mark says pulling her hands down. "Is the last word I would use to describe the way you look Maddy."
She looks down at his hands holding on to her dirt-covered ones.
"I volunteered," She starts, going back to his original question her answer coming out in a rush. "They still needed someone to help out since my dad joined security with Commander Taylor , which is a good thing since he's not good with plants and I was free. I'm past the school levels here so I thought I'd put myself to good use. I've read about the plants they're growing here and…" She trails off to take a breath looking back at him, blushing again when she sees he's giving her the same amused little smile he did when she explained the eating habits of a brachiosaur. "I'm rambling, I ramble, I'm a rambler."
He nods letting out a chuckle. "Noticed"
She laughs too hers self-conscious unlike his amused one. "Sorry."
Mark shakes his head as he stands up. "Don't be I like it…I got to go, my break is over and I have to get back to my post."
"Oh," Maddy nods. "Okay, I'll see you later?"
"Definitely" He answers as he starts to walk away; but he stops short and turns back to her. "Maddy?"
She looks at him as he stands a few feet away. "Yes?"
"It's…" He says scratching over his eyebrow as he looks away for a moment and then back at her. "It's not the only thing I like."
His words cause an automatic flutter inside her causing her to smile nervously at him. "Oh?"
"Yeah, top on the list is the dirt under the fingernails and the great smile." He says with a small grin.
Maddy feel a larger smile breaking out at his words, her face warm.
"Yeah, that one," He winks. "I'll see you later."
Maddy nods once more. "Definitely."
