It's been a long night.
Too long, Artemis thinks to herself, trying not to fall asleep on her feet. She's next to Green Arrow, resisting the temptation to lean on him and nod off in hopes he'll just take her home. The League is discussing something or other—she catches things like "Red Tornado," "the kids," and "disbanding," but nothing really registers through the haze that is her mind.
Someone taps her shoulder, and she looks to see Robin standing there, looking for all the world like nearly drowning didn't faze him at all (really, would it kill him to at least pretend he's as tired as she is). He gestures silently with his head to where the team has gathered, observing the adults' conversation.
She spares only a second to make sure Green Arrow's attention on her before she follows Robin.
"… do you think they're talking about?"
"One of them suggested disbanding the team," Conner says, and every wide-eyed gaze snaps to him. He finishes hurriedly: "But they shot that down quickly."
There's a momentary sigh of relief.
"They do still need to decide what they're doing with us," Wally says.
"And they no doubt must determine how to handle the..." Kaldur attempts to find the right word, "situation of Red Tornado.
Artemis catches his tone, tentative and concerned, and frowns. There's something else on his mind. With his brow furrowed, she realizes Robin is thinking the same thing, and he meets her eyes and offers a barely-perceptible nod of understanding.
But it's something they'll have to leave for later. For now, she just wants to sleep. They're all alive, and that's what matters in the end. She's about to break away with a "goodnight," but M'gann speaks first.
"Before we get too worried," she starts slowly, "can we just take a moment to appreciate that we're all… okay? Or, at least, we will be?"
Artemis nods her agreement, and is about to echo her, but again someone cuts her off.
It's Robin this time: "Definitely. And it calls for a group hug!"
He would be the hugger. He stretches his arms out, and in a blur Wally is there, nearly knocking Robin off his feet (Artemis wonders how long he's been holding that back). M'gann is the first one to float over, gladly accepting the embrace—she even manages to tug Conner along, who looks awkward but somehow… pleased.
"Kal?" Smiling and shaking his head, Kaldur uncrosses his arm and moves to join them. Artemis is about to make a grand escape before they notice she isn't involved, but Robin (who is really too observant for his own good) catches onto her.
"C'mon, Artemis," he encourages from in the middle.
"Ah," she begins, trying not to look as awkward as she feels, "sorry, but no. I don't do group hugs."
"Hey," Wally begins, "being part of the group means being part of the group hugs."
"No, I really—"
"Artemis," M'gann cuts her off, somehow gentle and firm at the same time, "just try it."
You said it yourself, her subconscious reminds her, they're your family.
Fighting back a broad smile at their insistence (because it means that they do in fact accept her), she feigns a loud sigh and joins them. She can see the smiles of approval from them, and it warms her from head to toes.
"I see that smile," Wally teases. "You like it."
"Oh stuff it, Flash Boy."
