Chapter 4

Hermione's explanation was cut off as she turned on the light and discovered that her room, her room that had always been so wonderfully private, was filled with Hogwarts students.

"SURPRISE!" they all yelled.

Hermione wondered exactly how many times she'd been struck speechless in the past few hours. Probably more times than in the whole rest of her life combined.

"Surprise!" The red-headed wizard she'd met earlier in the day bounced up to Hermione. "Hi, I'm Ron Weasley and I threw this party just for you! Were you surprised? Huh?"

He bounced again.

"Very surprised," Hermione said. "Libraries are supposed to be quiet."

"A library?" Ron asked, looking confused. "This is a library? I thought it was your bedroom! Isn't that your bed?"

"I get one private room, and I'd rather have a library than a bedroom," she told him.

"What? But if this is your only room, and it has a bed, it has to be your bedroom!"

"No, it doesn't. It's a library that I happen to sleep in every night. And both things require quiet."

"Wow," said Ron, "that's really interesting! But I mean, what sort of party would this be if it were quiet? Boo-oring!"

"And why exactly is there a party in my library?" Hermione demanded, as she tried to push through the crowd of students to find the books she needed.

"Remember this morning when you said, 'Hello,' and I was all, UHHHHHHHHH!? I know everywizard, and I mean everywizard at Hogwarts, and I know that you're Hermione and you aren't in any House. I've seen you around but you never say hello to anywizard, ever, except since Dumbledore is your teacher I assume you say hello to him but I've never seen you say it.

"So I thought," Ron went on, as Hermione wondered how he had enough air to keep going like this. "If you were saying hello, then you might want to get to know other students and become friends! But you since you never said hello before, you must want friends, but not have any of them, so you must be lonely and that made me so sad."

Now she was starting to get a headache from the nonstop jabbering, so Hermione abandoned the books and walked over to the drink table. Ron was still talking.

"So then I had an idea, and it was such a good idea that I went UHHHHHH!, I'll just throw a big huge party and invite all the wizards and witches at Hogwarts, and we'll have so much fun. See? And now you have lots and lots of friends!"

As Ron was speaking, Hermione took a large gulp of her drink, only to discover it was Butterbeer. But that had alcohol in it! She couldn't get drunk while she was supposed to be stopping the Dark Lord from returning!

"Are you alright?" asked Neville, who had just joined them.

Tears in her eyes, Hermione ran to her bathroom to spit out her drink

"Aww, that's so sweet!" Ron chirped. "She's so happy she's crying!"

"How did you get into my room?" she demanded. "It's enchanted with a lock that only my wand or a teacher's can break!"

"Well, I asked Dumbledore if we could have a party for you, and he said yes, definitely. But I tried the Room of Requirement and somebody else is already using it and has been all evening. So when I told Dumbledore, he said you wouldn't mind if we had the party in your room, so he let us all in!"

"Oh, he did, did he?" Hermione asked grimly. Then she blinked. "Wait, if Dumbledore let all of you in, why is there alcohol?"

Ron blinked at her. "You mean the... butterbeer? I think he brought it. But anyway, we left your door open so plenty of people brought refreshments."

"Anyone... could have... you left my door open?" Hermione sputtered. "What if someone stole my books?"

"Aw, don't worry about that," said Harry. "Nobody's going to steal anything."

"I'm sure Dumbledore put up some sort of spells to protect your things," Neville said comfortingly.

"Come on, Hermione!" Ron broke in excitedly. "We're playing all sorts of fun games!"

Hermione groaned.

Several hours later, the party was still going strong in Hermione's library. She sat in the bathroom, trying desperately to look up information about Lord Voldemort and the Horcruxes of Harmony, but Dumbledore must have done something to her locking spells because they didn't hold. Every time someone had to use the restroom, she was forced to leave and go out to the party. It made any kind of research next to impossible.

"Hello?" called Dobby's voice, as he knocked gently on the door.

"Yes?" Hermione asked, annoyed.

He opened the door and came in. "Miss Hermione should join the party," he told her. "It's a lot of fun, and all of the students are wanting to be friends with Miss, just like the Headmaster said!"

"No!" Hermione said angrily. "All the students at this school are cah-RAZY! Do you know what time it is?"

"But Miss Hermione, tomorrow there will be no lessons, and the End of Term Feast is not until the evening. There is no need to sleep early," Dobby said earnestly.

"I don't want to sleep, I want to study!" She balled her fist and made a noise of frustration. "Here I thought I'd have time to research the Horcruxes of Harmony, but all this ridiculous friend making has kept me from it!"

A student knocked on the bathroom door then, so Hermione was once more forced to leave her sanctuary and join the party.

"Oh, look, Miss Hermione!" Dobby said in a dreamy tone. "Master Draco has arrived!"

"That's great, Dobby," she said glumly. Then she brightened. "Actually, that is great!"

"I know, he's amazing," the house elf sighed.

"No, not that. Hey, Ron!"

The redhead bounced over. "Yes Hermione?"

"Draco's at the party," she said, "so that means that the Room of Requirement is free!"

"How do you know Malfoy was the one in the Room of Requirement?" Ron asked.

"Never mind that! We can move the party in there now!"

"Oh, no, it's too late for that now!" Ron shook his head vigorously. "We set up the party here and made all the preparations here and besides, there are so many students all partying here, you can't just pick up and have hundreds of students all go through the hallways to change where the party is, trust me, I know parties, and it just wouldn't work!"

Darn, thought Hermione.

She went over to her study desk, and picked up Predictions and Prophecies of the 10th Century and again read the passage she couldn't stop worrying about.

On the longest day of the thirteenth year of his banishment, the stars will align, and a rat will aid in his escape, and he will return to conquer Magical Britain once more.

"I sure hope the Headmaster is right," she said quietly, "and it really is just an old witch's tale."

When Hermione woke the next morning, the sun was streaming through her window at a strange angle. It looked more like late afternoon than it did like morning...

She sat up swiftly and looked at her clock- it was almost four!

"Dobby! Why didn't my alarm spell go off? Why didn't you wake me up when it didn't?" She demanded.

Dobby Apparated into her room. "Miss Hermione did not go to sleep until very late last night," he told her. "Dobby thought that he should let her sleep, since there are no lessons today."

"I didn't go to sleep until very late because Dumbledore let a bunch of students into my library to have a party!" she protested. "And there may not be lessons, but Lord Voldemort might be rising again today!"

She leapt out of bed and threw on some robes.

"I can't believe how much time I've wasted! The End of Term feast is in just a couple of hours!"

"Miss Hermione," Dobby said nervously, "Headmaster Dumbledore is a great wizard. Dobby is sure that if the Dark Lord were rising today, that the Headmaster would know it. If he has said not to worry, Miss should not worry."

"I know he's a great wizard," she said, "but he's not infallible! Oh, why did he choose now to insist that I make friends?"

But she didn't have very much luck that afternoon. Before long, she admitted that she had to just go to the Feast and hope for the best.

"Hermione! There you are!" Ron bounded over to her, though he seemed a bit subdued compared to the night before. Harry followed behind. "Hey, have you seen my rat, Scabbers? He ran away sometime last night, and I've been looking for him everywhere, but he's nowhere to be found!"

"Your... rat?" she repeated, starting to feel uneasy. A rat will aid in his escape...

As the three students entered the Great Hall, they were joined by Neville and Luna.

"Do any of you know where Professor Dumbledore is?" Neville asked.

"He's not in the Great Hall?" said Harry.

Neville shook his head. "No. I was hoping that maybe Hermione had seen him, being his private student and all."

"No, I didn't have any classes today," she said. "I haven't seen him since the day before yesterday."

"I thought that maybe he's preparing for his attack on the Ministry," Luna said, "but if Hermione's here, then it can't be that, can it?"

Everyone looked at Luna blankly.

"What is she talking about?" Harry asked.

"Don't look at me," said Hermione. Then she spotted familiar blonde hair. "Oh, no! That's Draco. Don't let him see me!"

She dove behind Neville.

"Uh, not that I'm Malfoy's biggest fan or anything," said Harry, "but why are you hiding from him?"

"I was supposed to see him today for a makeover!" she hissed. "He designed dress robes for me, and I was supposed to wear them tonight!"

To her annoyance, Harry once again burst out laughing, and several of the others followed suit.

"I'm glad you always find my problems so funny," she snapped at him.

"Hermione! There you are!"

"Oh, crap, he's spotted me," she muttered. Then, with a sigh, she turned to face Draco.

"Hi," she said.

"Where were you today, darling? And my goodness, what are you wearing? I made simply the most divine robes for you, but I couldn't find you anywhere! I tried knocking on your door, and I went to the library, and-"

"I overslept because of the party," Hermione said quickly. "Sorry about that. By the time I woke up, it was too late to prepare."

Draco looked very disappointed. "Couldn't you at least have worn something a little nicer?" he asked. Then he brightened. "I know, why don't we just nip down to the Room of Requirement right now and get you into that marvelous robe? It'll only take half an hour, and hour tops."

"The Feast starts in a few minutes!" she protested.

"Nonsense, Dumbledore isn't even here yet, we have plenty of time."

Hermione looked back at the other students pleadingly, but they were still laughing at her misfortune. Draco had grabbed her arm and was tugging her towards the door when they heard a student scream.

"Oh my God!" he cried. "What's that?"

The student pointed up towards the ceiling, which Hermione noted was completely clea.

Then her eyes focused on something to the side of the ceiling, a patch of sky probably right above the Forbidden Forest, that she kind of wished had been blocked by the clouds.

Because hanging there in the sky, more ominous and terrifying than she could have imagined, was the Dark Mark.

"He's back," Hermione whispered. "Voldemort's returned."
