Her name was mentioned once before he knew. It had been a casual statement, said as if Shawn was just informing his father he was out of milk, but Henry knew it was more.
"I'm off to tell Jules and Lassie-face of this groundbreaking discovery!" he had exclaimed.
Henry had responded in his usual tone, acting as if their world wasn't about to change in the most important of ways.
"Yes, you know the paperboy wasn't the murderer. The apocalypse is here."
Of course, it had turned out it was the paperboy, who had been having an affair with the wife of the wealthy and dead businessman. How that one came about, he would never know.
But—unlike the homicidal paperboy—Shawn Spencer had ways of hiding things. He knew all the tricks—how even the slightest quiver in his voice could give him away, the tiniest fraction of a smile. He could lie with ease, smile when he wanted to cry, and if all else failed, he ran. His son knew it all. But he knew his son. And he knew the look he got in his eyes when he mentioned her name offhand.
Confrontation wasn't necessary. Eventually, Juliet would notice the difference, as well. She was a cop, too, after all—a good one at that. Yes, eventually, she would notice that his flirting was less playful and suggestive, and more loving and cryptic. Eventually, she would see the way his eyes drooped when she put him down and the way they lit up when she entered a room smiling.
Eventually, everyone would know that Shawn Spencer was in love with Juliet O'Hara, and it wasn't about to change.
