September 2nd, 2002.

Catherina Valentine walks to her new kindergarten, swinging her lunch box (the red one with the white polka dots,) the entire way. She's early, and only a few kids wait around on the play ground. Catherina stands near the swings when a boy with dark brown eyes and short black hair walks up to her. "Hey," He says, and she nods, her eyes wide.

"Hi!" She squeaks nervously, and then claps a hand to her mouth. The boy looks confused, and Catherina runs off embarrassed. She avoids looking at him for the rest of the day.

Cat admired the boy sitting across the table from her. He was deeply involved in a conversation with his brooding girlfriend Jade. Her eyebrows were knit together and her arms were crossed. "You put milk in it." She pouts, and Cat just watches as he tries to apologize. "You know I only like black," She snaps at his pleading figure.

Catherina Valentine sits in class, silently coloring her rhino orange. The boy she met last month, Beckett, she learned, sat down next to her. "Hi." He said holding out his hand. "I'm Beckett, but call me Beck."

Catherina looks from him, to his hand, back to him. She then squeaks embarrassedly, grabs her backpack and coloring book, and takes off to sit down at a table next to the snotty Tara, desperate to get away from the small boy.

Cat watches as Jade gets up from the table as soon as Tori sits down, and how Beck desperately follows her. He doesn't even look back at Cat as he hurries to keep up with his brooding girlfriend. Jade was Cat's best friend, but she couldn't help feeling that Jade was a bit… careless. With her friends, her school work, her boyfriend…

The boy named Beck sits next to Catherina and attempts to befriend her for the 6th time. This time, little Catherina doesn't run away. Instead she keeps intently coloring her gorilla, pressing so hard that the crayon snaps in half. This makes her squeal and Beck nabs this chance to talk to her. "Hey," He says breezily. "What's your name?"

Catherina looks up with wide eyes. "Catherina," She says, her voice barely a whisper.

"Caterpillar?"

She shakes her head. "Catherina." She says, slightly louder this time.

"Catherine?"

"Catherina!" She squeaks shrilly, and then her cheeks brighten.

"Catherina? That's too long."

From that moment on, Beck renames Catherina Cat. She just nods, and once he's finished, jumps up and runs to her cubby.

Cat thinks that Jade is awesome. But she doesn't see how Beck can put up with her. She may be a great friend, but maybe not the best girlfriend. Cat sits alone at the table, when Andre and Tori flounce up to the table. They sit down and Cat smiles. She can't help but notice how Andre's hand moves towards Tori, as they laugh together, and then grasp it. Tori makes no effort to move away.

Cat wishes she had someone like that.

Someone to love.
