A/N: Hello! This is the first fanfic I have written in YEARS and my first Soul Eater one to boot. It's a short presented in Soul's POV during the first fight with Ragnarok and Crona in the church when he saved Maka. It's based on the manga, not the anime. It just came to me at 6am and I unfortunately don't have a beta, so please forgive any mistakes.
Disclaimer: I do not own Soul Eater

Her back was against the door. There was nowhere to go. "Maka! Block!" I shouted. The sword called Ragnarok was slicing through the air towards my meister and in a split second it would connect with her soft flesh.
"But if I do you'll…!" she replied. Her strong hands uncharacteristically trembled on my handle. I could feel her fear and hesitation and knew it was too late. Stupid girl. Fear for my meister drove me and in the next moment I was transforming to my human form, arms spread wide. It all happened so slow, yet incredibly fast. I wasn't even fully transformed when I felt the blade burn down my chest. There wasn't any pain, just a numb, frozen feeling that spread all the way to my fingertips.
I seemed to float to the ground. Time was unmoving. A profound sense of satisfaction wormed its way into my soul. Now she could get away, she could run and be safe. I had saved my meister, my Maka. My duty as her weapon is done. The stasis of the serene moment was broken by Maka screaming my name. The pain started to bloom as I was thrust back into reality. It made it hard to think as it began to claw at my chest. Why is she still here? Her tiny voice interrupted my thoughts as her hand touched my shoulder. "No… Soul…"
"Idiot… Hurry up and run…" Stupid girl! I tried to move my arm to push her away, but I was unable to control my body. I felt like my limbs were weights and it was getting hard to breathe through the burning ache. The fear for her returned and I wished for my strength to come back, but it seemed to be seeping out of me with my blood. She had me on my back and the pain made it so hard to think. "Soul…" she whispered. "I'm sorry… It's all my fault…" Her hair was caressing my cheek. It felt nice compared the pain. But no matter how nice it felt to be this close to her, the fear was still there and I couldn't speak. Run Maka! Leave me behind! The words just wouldn't come out.
My mind registered a shocked silence that seemed to stretch into eternity. A sudden crash shattered the silence. "Doctor Stein!" Maka yelled. He was here? Then she was safe. She mentioned something about a blade but I couldn't quite understand her anymore. All that mattered was I protected her long enough for her to be saved. Doctor Stein would defeat the sword and Maka could go home.
Peace settled over me. With that peace darkness came that began to seep around the edges. I didn't feel the pain anymore. It was like I was detached from my body. I could still smell Maka though, and feel the ghost whisper of her hair on my cheek. Weird. She was murmuring things in my ears. I couldn't make out the words, but I thought her voice sounded like a song. A sweet soothing song and I could hear each note perfectly in her voice. It seemed to resonate into my soul, washing away all my sorrow.
Suddenly, she wasn't whispering in my ear anymore, but talking to someone else. Her voice seemed distant and the song shattered, the shrill notes of pain returning and bringing the darkness closer. It was closing in on me and swallowing me whole. Fear pounded in my body as the darkness overwhelmed. All I wanted was… Maka.
And everything was black.
