Catherine slowly began to pile the small items from her desk into the box. She opened the drawer and a small smile fell on her lips as she lifted out an old photograph of her old CSI team. Warrick, Nicky, Greg with his spiky hair, Sara and of course Grissom.
She missed the old team. She remembered the day Sara arrived and he quickly befriended her. She remembered the team splitting because of Ecklie. She remembered Warrick dying and she remembered Grissom leaving. It all seemed to fall apart as fast as the Graveyard shift of the Las Vegas Crime Lab was built.
Now it was her turn. She sighed and tossed the picture in the box before the hot tear rolled down her cheeks.
She heard a knock on the door, but didn't look up. "I told you to stop checking on me Nicky im fine."
"Well, its good to know he's looking after you, but I agree; you're a big girl."
Catherine's head shot up as she recognized the voice. "Gil..." the barely audible name fell from her lips.
"In the flesh."
"What... what are you doing here?" She asked too stunned to give him a welcoming hug that she always imagined.
"I heard you were leaving CSI, so I decided to come see you."
"Why?" She asked
"I know we haven't talked a lot since I left, but you were there for me for so many years. You're one of the closest friends I have... maybe the only. Plus... I love you."
He watched as her bottom lip quivered. She bit it to hold back her tears.
"I've known you for a long time and believe it or not I know when something is wrong with you," he said kneeling beside her.
"I know, because you'd turn the other way and lock yourself in your office if you could," she replied with a sniff. "I just can't do this anymore Gil. Everyone has grown so much, there's nothing else to teach them. I have a daughter whose life I've missed so much of and any day could be the last time I see her. I'm just... not you."
"Cath," he said placing his hand on hers. "You had everything I didn't: family, and most importantly you. How do you think I did it?"
"With a book of quotes and being a workaholic," she replied smiling through her tears.
"That helped. Plus you and my team."
"Speaking of which, they're out on a case," she said wiping her face.
"I know... I spoke to Sara," he sighed.
"Uh oh, you didn't say that with too much confidence."
"I also came to Vegas to tell Sara that i know longer wanted to be with her."
"What? Why? You two were so happy."
"No, happy is being together not 60,000 miles away from each other. I also realized I was in love with someone else whom which it killed me more to be so far away from."
"Who?" She asked so full of questions. Without saying a word he placed a soft kiss on the palm of her hand only to have her jerk it away.
"No, no! I can't handle this! Im leaving my job which is emotional as it is, then you pop out of nowhere and you tell me you love me! Sara is my friend. What am I supposed to tell her?"
"I know, I know. I should have put you in this position so soon."
"Or at all," she shook her head.
"Just please tell me that you love me too," he pleaded, "please and ill do whatever you want even if its to leave you alone. Cath, I just need to know."
Catherine pressed her lips together and closed her tear soaked eyes. Everything in her began to shake as she answered.
