Fire War Epilogue

Three figures picked their way across a still-smouldering plain.

The first, a green-clad Rogue, missed her footing, slipped on a pile of dragon entrails, and fell flat. Picking herself up, she glared at her snickering companions. "It's not that funny, you know."

A pretty mage in pale-blue-trimmed charcoal robes looked totally unrepentant. "Yes it is. Besides, consider it payback for all the snide remarks about my burnt eyebrows. Avatre, stop that!"

The last part was addressed to the pale blue dragon at her side, which had spread her silver-grey wings in preparation to launch itself at the red-and-black dragon egg that the third, a warrior, carried. At the mage's command, the baby dragon subsided, looking decidedly sulky.

The warrior, Henna, at least tried to look sympathetic, though her attempts were spoiled by the sporadic giggling. "You're right, Nightflower, we shouldn't be laughing at the fact that you're covered in flame-grilled dragon. 'Ria, will you control that dragon of yours!"

The mage, Vaneria, caught her dragon mid-leap, giving it a swift rap on the snout. Nightflower stopped brushing herself off long enough to comment. "What is with Avatre right now, anyway? The little fiend is usually even harder to piss off than you are."

Vaneria ran her fingers lightly over the Primal Ice Markings on her dragon, sighing. "She heard Nifaria entrusting me with the egg and me worrying that I'd have to take care of it, too. Avatre's just jealous."

Henna giggled at the thought. "Older Sibling Syndrome?" She frowned and tilted her head, "Or should that be 'Older Dragonet Syndrome'?"

Vaneria rolled her eyes. "Who cares? Let's just find the nearest Portal, give it to Lady Celestina, and run before she can reach for the teapot. I just want to take a long bath and then sleep for a week."

Nightflower snickered as they approached a portal. "Good luck with that. We never last more than six days before something new comes up, and Aria wants to go exploring as soon as the forest stops smouldering."

The other two glared, then exchanged looks. Henna shoved the egg into Nightflower's arms, and Vaneria shoved them both through the portal to Sunbreeze Grove, before re-setting it to take her back to Falconreach.

A week might be too much to ask for, but she had at least a day, right? And it would probably take that long for her sisters to escape Lady Celestina's tea-room.
