And Then There Were Three

"So it's just the three of us now," Marguerite commented, turning from the men.

"Until Veronica and Ned return," Roxton assured her. "And they will return."

She turned to face them. "Shouldn't we be out looking for her?"

Challenger placed Malone's note on the table. "She grew up here. She knows this place."

"It's been nearly a week. She should have been back by now."

The men agreed but said nothing.

Fighting back her tears, she walked to the elevator. "I'm going to… I don't know, do something."

"Marguerite!" Roxton called but she had already disappeared. He looked to Challenger who nodded for him to go after her.

****************

Roxton found Marguerite sitting beside an isolated stream.

"Are you alright?" he asked, sitting beside her.

"What if I were to lose you? Or Challenger?" Soft sniffles gave away her tears.

"You won't. I promise you I'm not going anywhere."

She looked at him with her gray-green eyes and smiled. "You can't promise that. None of us can."

Sliding his arm around her, he pulled her close, running his fingers through her hair. "At least this time we don't have to worry about Ned or Veronica being dead."

"Don't we?" she sniffed. "I don't know why we've been kidding ourselves about Veronica. We all saw her hanging from that balloon. Anything could have happened."

He kissed the top of her head. "But it didn't. I'm sure one day soon she'll come walking through the door yelling at us about redecorating her place or something."

Marguerite laughed. "And Ned? He's out there all alone."

"He's been here long enough. He knows how to take care of himself," Roxton assured her. "Everything will turn out alright in the end."

"If you say it, I'll believe it," she whispered.

They sat in silence, watching the water drift by them. Neither knew what would come their way but as long as the three of them stuck together they would survive until their friends returned.
