Just a small idea that came about when I was driving home from Seattle yesterday. It's been floating around for a while but last night it finally sort of materialized in my mind so I'm putting it on paper. Or rather, online - for you lot. (:

Jack could see it in Esther Drummond's eyes. As soon as she would wake up in the early hours of the morning, until she nearly collapsed from exhaustion in the late evening. The way she was always intently focused on her work at hand and would stare at the many computer screens, retaining information until her head would ache from overworking. Just like Rex and Gwen, she was never set on finishing her work and sleeping. Instead, Esther's determination would drive her forward and she would stay working until daybreak if it meant it helped crack the case of Miracle Day.

Despite the way she was constantly self-conscious about her skills, and how Rex would put her down for the most miniscule of problems, Jack saw it. Esther was brilliant. She was smart, and intuitive. She was able to sift through files for hours on end and be capable of finding small facts or documents that pushed Torchwood's investigation forward, and would never ask for a 'thank you' for her hard work. Jack would often find himself wondering if Esther realized how selfless and caring she was… probably not. With the way she loved Rex, and how he would shun her did nothing for her confidence. It was a shame, really. Someone with so much talent and intelligence shouldn't have had to bottle it all up like Esther did. But it didn't matter. Jack saw it.

And oh, how did it remind him of the old days. Of the old Hub, where his previous team of freedom fighters would laugh, fight, and cry… look at where they were now. Torchwood was in hiding from the world because they were no longer known as a helping cause. But now, him and Gwen acquired Rex and Esther. Just as much as they were replacements, they were their own characters. But Esther… she had an extra shine.

Just like she did. Oh, she had that shine too. That level of aptitude and ability. Not to mention her tendency to follow after love. Despite the hurt, despite the rejection… she was still there. With that innocent smile that masked a true fire deep within, she was there. And within Esther, Jack would catch glimpses of what used to be.

Jack saw her.

Jack saw a Torchwood member.

Jack saw Toshiko Sato.

A/N: So is it just me, or do others see the resemblance between Tosh and Esther, and Owen and Rex? I just couldn't get that thought out of my mind, but here it is! I miss the old team… but I really do like Esther. Not too fond of Rex, though. But really – is anyone?
