Why He Smiles
She's the reason why he smiles.
Don't get me wrong, August Anderson's lips were often turned upwards on his face a lot, but it was usually in the form of a smirk – not a real, genuine smile. That all had changed on the day that he guided Annie Walker down the hallways on her first day at the job.
He had decided ever since she asked him about his headphones instead of his blindness that he would look out for her, be her best friend. That might have been on of the best decisions that he has made in his life. Why? He was a lot happier when she was around. He likes going on little off-the-record missions with her (going a morgue or one or two of Danielle's Thursday dinners). He lives to hear her laugh when he would tease Jai Wilcox after he would over flirt with Annie or any other women in their department, to hear her heels that both Annie and Auggie loved – letting him know that she was coming into his office, or just to hear her voice during an op that probably will or already has gone wrong.
Whenever Annie was in the field, Auggie worried nonstop about her, thinking about the op and ways in which it could go awry. There weren't that many ways that any of the missions could go bad, but Annie always found out a way to turn it from going smoothly to going badly. And as a shame to being an Eagle Scout, he was never prepared when something bad came around and seemed to make a beeline for Annie.
When ever this happened he made sure that he was in her ear, telling her where the exits were or to follow her instinct on what to do, even when he was caught off guard by this repetition of trouble always finding her. He also made sure that he saw her – no pun intended – when she got back. Then they would take a load off and head to Allen's for a few drinks. As they drank they would talk about work and about Annie's family and the drama that ensued with them. And he listened to every word that she would say.
But at the end of the day he knew she was the best thing that has probably ever happened to him – and not just because she often forgot that he was blind
