Almost eight months have passed since the Battle of Hogwarts, and still there has been no sign of either Voldemort or Aizen, although battles with their followers have been many. The wizards of the Order of the Phoenix and the shinigami of the Soul Society have continued their alliance to defeat both enemy leaders, although the wizards' Ministry of Magic continues to suppress those who support the late Albus Dumbledore, so corrupted are they by Voldemort's Death Eaters.

Within that time, many things have changed in both the wizarding world and the world of the shinigami.

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry has temporarily closed, and the students moved elsewhere to continue their education. The ancient castle now stands as headquarters for the Allied forces, protected by new barriers to allow the shinigami to come to and from the Soul Society.

Harry, Ron, and Hermione remain hidden, having broken off all contact with their friends and family. It is assumed they are working on Dumbledore's last orders.

In the Soul Society, three new taicho have appeared. Abarai Renji was made taicho of the Fifth Division. Kuchiki Rukia has taken his place as fukutaicho of the Sixth Division. Hinamori Momo has been forcibly retired by Unohana Retsu for an indefinite amount of time; she has been replaced by the third seat of her Division. Many decades of training finally paid off for Kira Izuru, who attained Bankai soon after the Battle of Hogwarts, and was promoted to taicho of the Third Division. Madarame Ikkaku, as his Bankai was revealed during the Battle of Hogwarts, has been made temporary taicho of the Ninth Division. He claims he will return to the Eleventh Division as soon as a better candidate is found.

As for the four Marauders of the Soul Society, they, too, have risen in the ranks. Moguru Satoki and Bokor Oszlár have become the third and fourth seats, respectively, of the Sixth Division. Ureftu Lefu was made head of the Department of Wizardly Research in the Twelfth Division. Black Sirius, after proving himself a capable warrior in battle, was made the fukutaicho of the Thirteenth Division.

All four of them have thrown themselves into the war against Aizen and Voldemort, but Sirius is soon recalled from the front lines. The Soul Society has encountered a problem that could destroy everything Sirius has worked for, and affect even those in the mortal world…
