Story of Iris (NegaiShipping)

"How did this happen…"

It wasn't really stated as a question, given that she knew exactly how this had happened. She hoped that maybe by voicing this out loud, she could actually make some sense out of the previously failure of common sense. But considering the other person with her, common sense should have been thrown out a long time ago.

"I'm sorry!" the culprit behind the incident apologized, knowing that he had messed up big time.

Iris and Ash were currently trapped alongside the face of a mountain. Surely they could get down by themselves under normal circumstances, but a blizzard appeared that stopped them in their tracks.

They could have avoided this if Ash hadn't have been so hardheaded. Word on the street was that a herd of Pawniard rested on the mountain. Hoping to catch one, Ash raced up the mountain without bothering to wait for Cilan or Iris. Cilan warned him about the dark clouds looming in the distance, but Ash said that he could capture one before the precipitation showed up.

Iris told Cilan to stay behind while she charged after him, making sure to drag him back down before the storm.

And that definitely did not work out in their favor.

"Cilan is probably freaking out," she said, huffing a sigh. She was on the ground with her knees up, arms wrapped tightly around them. Axew had taken shelter in her hair. "Smart move, kid."

"I said I was sorry," Ash apologized for about the hundred time. Pikachu stared at him sadly. "If you heard that a bunch of, I dunno, Deino or something were up here, wouldn't you charge after them, too?"

"Um, not if I knew that a blizzard was barreling toward us!" Iris yelled.

Ash pouted. "Fine, you're much smarter than I am."

"That's not what I meant!" Iris's poofy hair bounced as she turned to face him. "Don't be like that!"

Ash didn't say anything further as he set his knapsack down and began rummaging through it. Iris went back to resting her head on her knees, trying to ignore the loud howling of the wind from the entrance of the cave. The chill air seeped in, causing Iris to shiver.

"I would suggest just hopping on my Dragonite and Flying down the mountain," Iris said, "but with him being weak against Ice and snow, that would only hurt him. So we'll just have to wait it out, unless Cilan can find help."

Ash didn't find anything useful in his knapsack. Most of the emergency kits and such were in Cilan's bag.

"We're not that far from the ground," Ash remarked. "As soon as the snow lets up, we should charge out of here and look for Cilan."

As he glanced over at her, he noticed she was shivering pretty harshly. Iris hated the cold and she usually kept a thick coat in her bag if she had to use it. But she must have handed off her bag to Cilan to catch up to him quicker.

As the definite guilty party of putting her in this situation, he took it upon himself to comfort her.

Iris sprung up from burying her face in her knees at the feeling of warmth upon her back. Ash placed his jacket on her and stepped away, crossing his arms.

"Sorry," he said, choosing not to face her. She figured he was probably embarrassed that he had screwed up and didn't want to admit it, even though he did apologize twenty million times.

"I charged after you because I wanted to make sure you were safe," she said. "Sure, you're ambitious, but you have to learn to show restraint sometimes, all right?"

Iris watched as he uncrossed his arms and put his gloved hands over his bare arms for warmth. That T-shirt was not going to do him any good.

"Come here, kid," she reached out her arm, a slight blush staining her cheeks. The look on her face was one of seeming annoyance, but she wasn't about to let him know how she really felt.

Ash stood in confusion for a moment at her gesture before she told him to pick up the pace. He rushed over to her as she placed her arm around him. The jacket wasn't big enough to lay over both of them, so this was the best she could do.

"I would just give you your jacket back and bear it," she smirked, "but this is your fault."

"I-I know that!" Ash huffed. Pikachu hopped in his lap and curled up. "That's why I gave it to you. You shouldn't have to suffer for my mistake."

She stared off. "It's not really suffering if you're here with me, at least," she said in a low tone.

"What was that?"

"I said, of course I'm suffering because you're here with me!" she shouted. "At least Cilan could have started a fire or something!"

"Now I feel like I regret giving you my jacket!"

"Too late now!" Iris threw her arms in the sleeves. "What are you gonna do now, yank it off of me? That would be pretty rude!"

Iris and Ash continued their silly banter until finally the blizzard turned into a light snowfall. Even then, they sat in the cave for just a bit longer, enjoying their time together—although enjoying could be a bit of a stretch considering how arguments between the two of them go.

But only they themselves knew that they cherished the other's company, even in a situation such as this.

…Whether they wanted to admit that openly or not was up to them.
