She let herself in. She could have knocked. Could have called his name and his phone and kept up until his head was pounding. It wouldn't have done her any good, though. Sometimes it was just easier to bypass his walls and slip inside before he had a chance to lock her out.
He was lying down on his couch, facing the back cushion. For a minute she just stared at him, the hurt rolling off of him in waves. She was the only one he could feel, but he didn't seem to understand that she could feel him, too. He moved inside of her in a way she couldn't understand - she wasn't even sure she wanted to. It was just enough that she icould/i
"You did a very brave thing today," she said quietly. "You saved that girl's life."
He shrugged, somehow not even surprised that she was there. "She deserves to have a her life."
"So do you."
He had nothing to say to that. Or maybe had so much that it choked him into silence. Either way, she slipped her shoes off and shed her jacket, laying it on the chair to her left. Then she stretched herself out next to him, body molding to his as one arm snaked around his waist.
"You amaze me," she whispered.
He deserved better. He deserved to have everything he wanted, everything he dreamed about in the silence of his mind. A little piece of her broke at the realization that she couldn't give him that.
But she could give him everything she had.
Her hand drifted to the hem of his t-shirt, slipping beneath it so that she could press her palm to his bare skin. He took in a sharp breath and she felt his stomach quiver. She let her fingers drift in lazy patterns, feeling the way his breathing shifted and his body shook. He wouldn't live his life without touch - she'd make sure of that.
His hand came up suddenly and pressed against hers, the fabric of his shirt soft between them.
"Audrey," he ground out, "you have to stop." He paused. "Or I'm not going to be able to."
Eight words and her heart stuttered.
"Because I'm the only one you can feel?" she asked.
"Because it's you."
Three words and her chest tightened, threatening to smother her.
Leaning forward, she kissed the spot just behind his ear, bending her fingers and scratching lightly against his chest. A shudder ran down the length of his body and then he was turning in her arms, never losing contact with her skin. He stared at her for a long time, wishing he knew how to say the right thing, how to make her understand. She met his gaze and he realized that she was right there with him, that he didn't have to make anything clearer to her. She already knew.
He leaned in and kissed her softly./lj-cut
