Last Night.
Chapter Eight.
[This Chapter takes place Five days after the events of Chapter Seven]
-Raven's POV-
Down Town Jump City
Or what was left of Down Town. It all seems so much bigger some how. Maybe the fact that there were no more dark shadows looming everywhere. More than half the buildings had been cleared away, all the debris and melted metal taken away for 'further analysis'. All the rubble, but the pile Beast Boy had last been seen on. The titans had made sure this one had still remained.
Raven had spent the last few days hidden in her room, hiding from the team. Mostly hiding from Robin if she really thought about it. She had realised he had only been obsessing over Red X because he was concerned about Starfire, hell she blew up the medical bay because of how much she 'cared' about Beast Boy. She shouldn't have raised her voice at her leader, and she certainly shouldn't have threatened him that way.
He didn't trust her, not anymore, not when it came to Beast Boy it would seem. One of them must have said something.
Traitors.
'These claw marks are so deep, no wonder why the team came back in the condition they did.'
She started walking up the path the creature had taken, following the deep slashes in the cement, steel, plaster and furniture all the way to the top. Once she was on the top she looked down over the other side of the pile and noticed two small impact points going down towards the ground. As she looked down towards her feet she noticed blood splatter mixed in among the mess.
She tried to ignore the roiling in her stomach.
She lifted herself off the unstable ground and floated towards the impact site closest to her. More blood and claw marks. The debris also showed that Beast Boy had tried to fight off whatever was attacking him. Though at the second impact site she noticed a large portion of his uniform had torn off onto a bloodied metal pole.
'Beast Boy...'
She looked down at the bottom; where the street started to become visible once more. She could make out small markings in what looked like black ink. As she drew closer, she noticed that it was actually demon blood.
There was three types of symbols visible, one looked like a harsh square with three lines through the bottom right corner. The second looked almost like an upside F, though it had two extra lines on the right side, and the third was four dash-like marks in the shape of a triangle with the 4th dash in the centre.
The three patterns were set in a recurring order in a circular formation. She gasped, "It's a Portal!"
-Starfire's POV-
It was almost a glorious day, the sun outside was shining down bright over the harbour. The water shimmering in response, birds called to each other in the distance somewhere. She would have liked to go outside, maybe to the beach or even to get pizza and mustard with her team.
But that was why the day wasn't as beautiful as it could be. She was stuck, inside with Robin and his footage. He had already gone over all the footage from the original attack. There was nothing more he could learn from those tapes. Nothing more anyone could learn.
The attacks seemed to stop.
Robin and Raven didn't seem to think so. That was why she was currently out, and he was currently in. Cyborg was off working on his car, it had sustained immense damage and was still full of blood. 'No, don't think about that night.' She looked down at Silkie. He was currently asleep on his back, his little legs twitching, drool leaking from his mouth. She started to rub his tummy and stared at Robin.
His posture was so stiff, even his movements to change to the next camera screen were stiff. He had very dark circles coming from beneath his mask. 'He's not sleeping again.'
Of course no one really had, it was hard. Knowing one of your team members were out there.
Alone.
Was he still alive?
'He is still Alive, how could I think such a thing about friend Beast Boy.' She picked up Silke and hugged him close to her. He tried to fight her off, trying to get back to his spot on the couch. But resistance was futile. 'Poor friend Raven. The two of them would have been perfect!' She thought excitedly. 'We must find him immediately and the two of them can touch the lips and hold the hands. I could not even begin to imagine how she must be feeling, her one true love is missing, and she is... well she is doing the different kind of missing.'
She looked at the screen, Robin was watching himself getting knocked out of the way over and over again, analysing his mistakes. Trying to plan out ways to take down the creature. The smell of all the smoke came back to her. The feeling of being choked, not being able to see properly...
flashback
Through the smoke all she could see was Cyborg in front of her, his large bulky frame blocking out the red glow from the crater. But it wasn't Cyborg. She had already seen the creature swing one of its long arms up at him, flinging him away like he was just a match stick.
It was the creature, it was right in front of her. Frozen she did nothing as it lunged at her, knocking her back into the bushes. Her hand felt like it was on fire.
'I'm going to die...'
It was on top of her, she could feel the weight bearing down on her ribs, she felt them shatter under its feet. The oxygen refusing to come back to her lungs.
It slashed at her, pulled her arm trying to pick her up, not realising that the creature itself was the reason she would not come. She felt it tear from its socket, she tried to wail in pain, but couldn't. Nothing, not a noise came from her.
Claws digging into her flesh, tearing, ripping. The smell of rot.
"... Starfire?" Robin raised his eyebrow at her, now he was standing in front of her looking down. "Raven is here come on."
-Narrator's POV-
Raven had entered from the elevator, Cyborg followed her; she'd obviously interrupted him. He was covered in car grease and had a ratchet in one hand while another had a hand towel, trying to wipe the mess off himself. Raven also didn't enter empty handed, she was carrying a large tome in her hands. Though its leather spine had fallen off from old age, the name was still visible, Toro Musk.
She plopped it down on the counter and started to flick through the pages after calling Robin and Starfire over. Once the rest of the team was in the kitchen area she started to talk.
"I don't know why I didn't recognise the creature when it came out of the crater in Starfire's vision, but when I saw these markings near where Beast Boy was attacked I couldn't believe my eyes." she flipped through a few pages before opening up at the right one.
She pointed to the three markings she had seen at the site. She hadn't been certain, but she was now. Very certain.
"This book is just suppose to be legend. Nothing more than something scary you read to little kids when they have misbehaved." She folded her arms over her chest and raised her arm up to her lip.
"So why have you been reading it?"
"Well because," Raven paused for a moment, "funnily enough it reminds me of the dimension where I come from. But that's not the point, these markings shouldn't be here, in Jump City. Or our dimension. If this is really what I think it is, than its worse than my father. And this time I don't think Slade will have made any secret deals that could help us."
"If the story is true then you have a way to beat it right there in that book of yours?" Cyborg smiled sheepishly.
"Not exactly. This book doesn't have a happy ending. The reason why is because its a place where vicious flesh eating demons, or people like me that cant control themselves are sent. There isn't suppose to be a way out." She flipped through more pages.
Starfire started turning green at the thought of beast boy being trapped in a place like that, if he was still even alive. She was wondering how Raven could be so strong at a time like this.
"But?" Robin questioned, hoping there would be more. "There is obviously a way in there right?"
Everyone looked up eagerly at Raven. "Haven't you been listening? If we get in there's no way out!" Her eyes started to water, but NO! She wouldn't lose control again, last month she wouldn't have been this out of control, especially not because of Beast Boy.
"But friend Raven, if those things keep coming here, and then taking people back with them. Could we not just accidentally get caught by one of those things and then maybe get one to bring us back? After the kicking of butt?" Starfire asked, hopeful like robin had been.
"I suppose I didn't think about that. I'll have to do some research, I need to leave here for awhile. It might be a good idea to see if Titans East and North will come to our aid in the mean time." She closed the book and picked it up carefully. "Don't try and do anything stupid while I'm gone, I would like to come back to what is left of my team, no hero missions, you could get yourself killed or taken and trust me death will be easier."
-Raven's POV-
Once she made it back to her room, she walked straight to her book shelves. She searched for anything that might tell her about the other dimension and the things that were coming from it. Searched for anything that might have the symbols she saw in Down Town.
Searched for just anything.
"Nothing!" She threw the book she was currently holding to the floor. It knocked over some of her candles. She went to pick everything up, sighing at the mess she had made. As she picked up the candles and put them back in their place, Raven looked at the shelf where she placed the candles she noticed the bag of sand. She grabbed the sand and the candles once more and started placing them on the floor in a circle, then sat in the middle of the circle.
"Azarath Metrion Zinthos
Carazon Rakashas Enderez
Vaserix Endrien Azararth
Azarath
AZARATH!"
A barrier of light grew from the sand, reaching up towards the roof. A swirling vortex appeared and she was pulled in to it. A twisting sensation took over her body as she went through, coming out at the other end to a warm sand stoned themed city.
She wasn't surprised that there wasn't anyone there, though she had to admit she was surprised Azarath still stood. It had been threatening to destroy itself forever it seemed. She found her way to the Library tower easily enough, all she had to do was follow the winding stairways and passageways. Now her real search could begin.
-In another dimension-
A wide, red waste land expanded out as far as the eye could see, above it, black clouds. Thunder rumbled on, lightning strikes flashing across the thick smoggy clouds. A hooded figure moved from the red stained balcony and back into the tower room. The room just as dark as the sky, one small orb on a metal pedestal in the middle of the room, glowing a bright blue colour.
The hooded figure reached the orb and lifted his scaled, claw like hands up to it, muting some of the glow it cast in the room. His hands slowly moving around it in wide circles, as the figure stared deeply into the orb, his shadowed face showing only four small red eyes where two should be instead, the hooded figure cast the light from them down onto the orb.
'How filthy this world is, and its creatures are such a weak and mewling lot. How they sicken me.' The hooded figure rasped.
'Doesn't matter, they wont last long. Not once we figure out how to keep the portal to this world open long enough to get more of our kind through to it. The more we take, the more powerful we grow.' It let out a hoarse, monstrous laugh before continuing.
'Soon enough we will have what we need. Soon enough we will have more than enough of these ridiculous breed of beings.' He removed himself from the orb and looked down the staircase, there he could see someone hanging from chains right in the centre of the staircase spiral.
'Though they do have an impressive amount of life force. they don't even know how to use it, how to harness that force to their advantage. what a young and ridiculous type of creatures.' His eyes glowed as the figure below shifted slightly in the chains.
'Though i am rather impressed by one such creature. Yes, this one will be delicious.' The hooded creature smiled, revealing a row of sharpened teeth.
End Chapter 8.
