Drabble – Wake

Strong arms surrounded him from behind as he stood in front desk staring at the mounds of work needing to be done. He laid his head back again the firm shoulder.

"Come away from this for a while with me, it will be here when you get back." The soft words were whispered in his ear.

"I wish I could." Alexander said, turning to look into Hephaestion's eyes.

"Just a while, you need this, I need this."

Alexander smiled as he placed his hands on either side of Hephaestion's face.

"Later."

"When?"

"Soon, I promise."

The day was hectic; the weeks worse and all the 'soons' became part of history.

There was never enough time in the day to get everything accomplished and the nights became endless parties, orgies and drunken blurs.

He saw Hephaestion all the time but never really looked, not seeing the disappointment and sadness. But maybe he did notice it, but didn't do anything to stop it.

Till he heard him say goodbye and ride away.

Alexander woke with a start. He turned to see Bagoas beside him in the bed. He untangled himself from the young man and stood beside the bed, looking around the room as if in a daze.

A nightmare, only a nightmare…

He threw on a robe and dashed from the room praying silently to anyone who would listen that Hephaestion would be in his room, where he should be, and not riding off in the distance.

Silently he entered the room, relief shuttering through his body as he watched the beautiful man sleeping in the bed.

He slipped put of his robe and watched as the blue eyes open sleepily. Hephaestion smiled at him and his heart lurched at the sight.

I'm wide-awake now, Hephaestion, and I finally see you.
