Chapter One: The Eterna Festival

Linnet rang the door bell of Dawn's house a week after the whole swimming incident. The aqua blue haired girl waited patiently as a shadow approached the door on the other side. She was bubbling with excitement. Since going swimming last week, Linnet couldn't remember the last time she had had that much fun (despite her cousin almost drowning and having to be saved by her old friend). Linnet wanted to do more things with her cousin and her two best friends. Everything Linnet thought about the three girls was totally wrong. They were cool and fun to be around. So here stood Linnet on Dawn's front door step, waiting for someone to let her in. Eventually, it was Misty who answered the door.

"Hi, Linnet," Misty greeted, "Come in."

"I just had to tell you about this," Linnet said giddily. She had a leaflet in her hand. She rushed through the house until she found Dawn and May in the kitchen.

"Hi, Linnet," Dawn said happily.

"Look at this," Linnet said, showing the three girls the leaflet in her hands. The girls stared at the leaflet for a few seconds until the information sunk in.

"You want to go to a forest?" Misty asked, unconvinced. Linnet nodded quickly.

"I know it's not something I'd usually do but there's the Moss Rock trail," Linnet explained, "I would love to see it!"

May took the leaflet out of Linnet's hands and looked over the information.

"I suppose we could go," May said. Misty took the leaflet from May in a snatching movement. Misty read more of the information.

"Wow, there's a festival at the same time," Misty gasped, "With rides and stalls and a lantern send off at the end of the festival."

"We should go," Dawn said, already sold on the idea. The other girls nodded.

"So have you guys seen the leaflets for the Eterna Forest Festival?" Gary asked his three friends while they were sat at his house. Currently Ash, Drew and Gary were playing a video game while Paul was sat reading a graphic novel. Paul glanced over his book at Gary.

"That lame thing?" Paul snapped.

"I like it," Ash said simply.

"Only because the food is cheap and oily," Drew added. Ash stuck out his tongue as he concentrated on the game. He let out a cheer as Drew's character was whacked off screen. "Hey!"

Paul rolled his eyes at his friends playing Super Smash Brawl. Really? Could they be more pathetic? Ash was playing as Pikachu (he'd always had an unhealthy obsession with that character), Drew was Yoshi (it was green like him) and Gary was Bowser (he liked turtles).

"Take that you stupid yellow mouse!" Drew roared at the screen.

"Pikachu, nooooo!" Ash wailed. Gary glanced over at Paul. Paul understood that look and smirked.

"Well, it's either sit here all day listening to these kill each other on this game or go to this stupid festival thing," Gary told Paul. Paul closed his book.

"I'll get my coat," was all he said as he got up and left the room.

"We're going out?" Ash asked dumbly.

"Sweet!" Drew cheered.

The girls approached the forest festival about six pm that evening. There was a large red gateway leading into the forest with lanterns lighting the way. The lanterns were strung up on electrical wires. They looked pretty with each one being a different colour from the one next to it.

Dawn was wearing a white kimono with pink flowers crawling from the bottom of the skirt. Her golden yellow obi was tied tightly round her middle. She had her hair up in a bun with a few slides and clips to keep it up and tidy.

May was wearing a red kimono with orange leaves scattered around and an orange obi round her middle. May's hair was up in its usual style but she had added a nice red flower ornament to her hair.

Misty was walking ahead of the girls. She had a plain pale blue kimono on with a teal obi. Her hair hung loose around her face which looked slightly odd for the usually tomboyish girl.

Lastly Linnet was wearing a white kimono which faded into a violet colour at the bottom of the skirt. Around her waist was a violet obi. She had a few white ornaments in her hair.

"So what do you want to do first?" Misty asked.

"Ramen!" May cheered. Linnet and Dawn glanced at May like they were expecting this answer. They let out a sigh. May skipped over to the nearest food cart and ordered a carton of ramen. The other girls waited for her a little distance away from the cart.

"It's pretty here," Dawn said.

"Yeah," Misty agreed, "I forgot how nice it can be here."

"See you should be thanking me for suggesting this place," Linnet said. The other two nodded happily.

"Yo, Ash! Get back over here!"

The girls froze as they saw Ash Ketchum run up to the food cart next to May and order some ramen. Gary and Drew raced after him, grabbing hold of him and trying to pull him away from the food cart. The girls sweat dropped.

"You're such idiots," Paul said as he calmly walked towards them. He had his hands in his pockets and a seriously annoyed look on his face. Drew and Gary paid no attention to him because they were still trying to pull Ash away from the cart. Paul let out a sigh.

"Hey Paul!" Linnet waved. Paul glanced over at her. His eyes travelled over Linnet, Misty then Dawn. His eyes widened slightly as he saw what she was wearing. He rolled his eyes and walked over to them. "What are you doing here? Stalking us again?"

"I had to take the animals for a walk," Paul replied, nodding his head in the direction of the other boys.

"Really?" Linnet asked, raising an eyebrow at him, "So you didn't come to check out any pretty girls?"

"There aren't any here," Paul said. Dawn and Misty glared at Paul for a few seconds until they heard Linnet was laughing.

"You're so mean!" she laughed, "Seriously. We four girls are the cutest, most beautiful girls here."

"Well if you're the top bar, I'd hate to see what the low bar is," Paul deadpanned.

"Thanks for the complement," Linnet said with a smirk.

"I didn't mean it as one," Paul told her, "You girls look like freaks wearing those awful clothes."

"Tut, tut, tut," Linnet said, waving her finger, "You clearly don't understand fashion, my dear prune head."

"Please, Linnet, 'prune head' is so first grade," Paul said.

"That's true," she agreed, "I need a new nickname for you."

"I've got one but I don't think it'll be allowed," Misty growled.

"Sir Rudeness," Dawn said out of the blue. Linnet clapped her hands.

"Brilliant, Dawn," Linnet said. She turned to Paul and pulled out her fan from her obi. She placed it on his shoulder and then tapped it on the other one. "I dub thee Sir Rudeness. Lord of darkness and sarcastic remarks."

"I'm so pleased," Paul dead panned. This made Dawn giggle slightly. Paul glanced at her, not as annoyed as he thought he should be. However, before he could say anything to shut the girl up there was a loud commotion at the food cart.

"GO AWAY!" the cart vendor yelled making Ash and the other two leg it over to Paul. They panted for a few seconds until they saw who Paul was stood with.

"Wow," Gary muttered, "You guys look awesome."

"Truly," Drew agreed. Linnet looked at Paul with a superior smirk on her face. Paul ignored her. May wondered over to the group, throwing Ash a carton of ramen.

"You owe me, mister," she told him. Ash smiled widely before he tucked into the food. May did the same.

"Wow," Drew commented as they watched Ash and May eat at the same speed as each other, "It's like they're twins."

The eating teens ignored the others while they ate. Gary turned to Linnet.

"What are you guys going to do?" he asked.

"We were going to go on the Moss Rock trail," Linnet replied coldly.

"Hey, so were we," Gary said with a shrug. Drew and Paul glanced at Gary weirdly for a few seconds. Since when were they going on a stupid trail? "We should go together."

"That's an excellent idea," Linnet agreed.

"It is?" Drew asked.

"Yes," Linnet replied, "And I have the perfect idea to sort out who goes with who!"

"Well, this is going to end badly, isn't it?" Drew asked Paul. Paul nodded slowly.

Ten minutes later Paul and Dawn were walking along the darkened Moss Rock trail. Paul walked with his hands in his pockets. Dawn was eating some candy floss they had got from the festival. Neither of them were talking to the other. Dawn glanced over at Paul's attire. She wasn't surprised that he wore a black turtle neck with grey jeans and a teal jacket. Although she was surprised that he wore Converse. Stylish Converse. Converse she had wanted for years.

"You like Converse?" Dawn asked. Paul glanced at her then down at his feet.

"Obviously," he replied.

"How many pairs do you have?" Dawn asked.

"Five," Paul replied, "Although one pair are totally ruined."

"I have three pairs," Dawn said, "And I'm the same. I only wear two pairs. I've got pink ones with yellow stars on and purple ones with silver laces."

"How interesting," Paul stated although it was clear he couldn't care less.

"My first pair were Torterra Originals," Dawn went on.

"Torterra Originals?" Paul asked, "You mean the limited edition Torterra printed green converse?"

"With Turtwig laces," Dawn said.

"Turtwig laces?" Paul asked, glancing at her. "How much did that cost you?"

"A hundred and twenty dollars," Dawn announced proudly, "I saved up for them for over a year before I got them. And I've only worn them once."

"Once?" Paul asked.

"In the shop where I bought them," Dawn replied, "I keep them in a special box. Only I can look at them."

"Wow, that's pretty hard core for such a girly girl," Paul said.

"I am not a girly girl," Dawn snapped, "I just prefer the girly way of life, until it comes to Converse and I am totally tomboy!"

"I can't see it," Paul stated.

"So you ruined your first pair, I gather?" Dawn asked. Paul nodded.

"Wore them to death," Paul replied.

"Poor Converse," Dawn muttered.

"I kept them though," Paul continued, "They were just plain purple ones."

"Nice," Dawn commented, "I wear mine on holiday. They're like the ideal holiday shoes."

"I'm the same," Paul said, "Apart from these."

"Wow," Dawn said looking up at Paul with a mischievous grin on her face, "I would never think you were a 'shoe guy', Paul."

"Shoe guy?" Paul asked, eyes narrowing, "What do you mean by that?"

"You know what they say about guys who like shoes," Dawn said in a strangely mischievous tone.

"They don't like getting their feet dirty?" Paul asked, clueless to what she meant. Dawn giggled and walked away from him. Paul paused for a few seconds. Had she just… made fun of him without him realising? He smirked. He really liked this girl now.

"You know," Dawn said to him, "Just because we've been forced to hang out and you saved me in the pool doesn't mean we're friends."

"I wouldn't dream of it," Paul said. He shrugged it off as a stubborn statement from a bratty girly girl. But when he looked at her, she was smiling at him. He smirked back at her. "But maybe I could persuade you?"

"Are you flirting, Paul Shinji?" Dawn teased.

"I don't flirt," Paul replied, "I don't know how to. Not at all. Despite Gary's lessons in it."

"Gary gave you lessons?" Dawn asked.

"I was drunk," Paul replied airily, "Don't judge."

Dawn giggled loudly at Paul. Paul smirked at her. They came to the Moss Rock. It was a large green rock with bells tied round the middle. Dawn and Paul looked at the strange rock for a few minutes.

"They say if you make a wish on the Moss Rock, it will come true when you least expect it," Dawn told Paul. Paul nodded. "Make a wish Paul!"

Dawn closed her eyes and put her hands in a prayer position. Paul shrugged and did a similar thing.

"Did you wish for something good?" Dawn asked him when he slid his hands back into his pockets.

"I guess," Paul replied.

"I can't wait until what I wished for comes true," Dawn giggled, "It's going to be great!"

They walked back towards the festival ground where May and Drew were stood arguing.

"You arrogant grass head," May told Drew.

"I'm arrogant?" Drew asked, "Says the girl who doesn't chew before she swallows!"

"It was ramen!" May yelled. Paul and Dawn glanced at each other before they turned and walked in the opposite direction. This was thing neither of them wanted to be a part of.

Hehe. I love festivals. I think they're awesome. The nearest thing we have to festivals is Bonfire Night in November and I don't like going out on Bonfire Night because I don't like fireworks! T_T Make my ears hurt.

Anyway, hope this chapter was enjoyable. I'm hoping to update on Monday *thinks* so I'll see you all then! Please review!
