The excitement in the air of the Enterprise was almost as palpable on the bridge as it was in the rest of the ship as the crew tried to remain professional despite their eager anticipation for the night's events. It was New Years on the Earth calendar and a huge party had been planned for all of the crew that wasn't absolutely needed to man the ship.
Jim was the edgiest of all as he watched the clock on the wall count down the time till the next shift was going to arrive to relieve them. Only Spock seemed to be immune to the excitement in the air and didn't jump up the moment the Beta shift came.
Chekhov even let out a loud whoop of happiness and literally jumped from his seat the instant their shift ended. All eyes turned to him instantly and the young Russian blushed a bright red in an embarrassment.
"Zorry Keptain." He stuttered shyly, keeping his eyes down.
Jim Kirk beamed at the young navigator and threw an arm around his shoulders.
"Don't worry about it Pavel, we're all excited. This is the first year we haven't had to cancel the party yet due to attack."
Chekhov's grin widened a little as his flush faded under the Captain's reassurance. Jim was quick to release his grip on the Russian's shoulders as Sulu's eyes glared daggers at every place his skin touched Pavel's. He knew of the Botanist's intentions for the Russian and respected his interest towards the younger man. He was happy for the soon to be couple and wished them only the best.
"See you all at the party. That's an order." Jim teased playfully. The Captain entered the turbolift quickly to avoid the rush of the rest of the crew, but the doors didn't close quick enough to stop Commander Spock from slipping in.
"Spock." Jim greeted him calmly, nodding his head at his first officer.
Spock nodded in return and cleared his throat lightly.
"Captain, I wish to inquire about your last order to the crew in accordance with tonight's attendance. Surely you were not implying it was mandatory?"
Jim's smirk became teasing at Spock's reluctance to attend the party.
"Why Commander Spock, surely you wouldn't want to miss a chance to view us illogical humans in our natural setting. Partying happens to be my greatest skill next to captaining."
Spock gave the Vulcan equivalent of a sigh and nodded his head lightly.
"Very well Captain, if my presence is required than I shall not disobey your orders…"
His lips twitched slightly in the Vulcan equivalent of a smile.
"I look foreword to seeing your 'partying' skills tonight."
Jim smiled at the slightly mocking tone in Spock's voice and stepped out of the lift without replying.
The doors were just about to close when the Captain turned on his heels to face him.
"Oh and Mr. Spock….I expect you to be dressed accordingly for the nights festivities. No Science blue."
Kirk wasn't entirely sure if he imagined the Vulcan's shocked expression before the door closed or not, but that didn't stop him from smiling in triumph.
Spock was at a loss as to what the Captain would deem appropriate garments for the gathering as he searched his closet later that evening. An illogical part of his mind wanted the Captain to find his appearance aesthetically pleasing tonight. Despite the fact that the Captain saw him every day this dismissal of the dress code seemed to be a prime chance to….Flaunt his appearance and attract the desired reaction from his target in question.
His target of course being Jim Kirk.
Somehow over the course of their 2 years in space he'd become infatuated with the youngest captain in Starfleet history. The blonde's blue eyes haunted his dreams and his bright smiles made Spock's heart flutter against his side whenever it was directed at him.
His subtle attempts at courting the younger man had thus far been unsuccessful in attracting his Captain's interest, but his mother had often said to grasp the moment. His moment would be the striking of midnight, the instant he intended to steal a kiss from his Captain.
It was the only logical time where tradition would excuses his actions since the Captain had banned mistletoe last Christmas.
(After nurse Chapel had rigged a bunch of the stuff all over sickbay, gotten drunk, and tried molesting him under it when he went in for his bimonthly checkup.)
Unfamiliar nervousness stirred behind his neutral apperence as he lifted an outfit from the back of his closet. It had been a gift from his mother shortly after he received his teaching position and she had told him he looked quite flattering in it. With a decisive nod he placed the garment on his bed and made his way to his bathroom for a quick shower. He had every intention of looking his best for the night ahead.
"Damn it Jim! You look fine! Stop worrying like some teenage girl before her first date!"
Jim ran a hand through his hair anxiously as he paced the length of his corridors.
"I can't help it Bones! He still makes me feel like a first year academy student every time I even think of making a move! I'm James T. Kirk, I used to be able seduce any women in the quadrant with just a smile and a shot of tequila! Now I can barely be in the same room as my first officer without feeling like a babbling virgin. He's a Vulcan! He shouldn't make me feel this way!... How can he make me feel so much when he denies feeling at all Bones?"
Jim sat down on his bed with a noticeable wilt to his posture as he subconsciously tore out more of his hair. Bones sat at his best friend's side and wrapped a comforting arm around his shoulder.
"I hate to break it to you Jim, but no one ever said loving a Vulcan would be easy. Personally I think you'd have better luck loving a rock, but what do I know? If anyone in the galaxy can manage to make that green blooded hobgoblin feel anything it would have to be you wouldn't it?"
Jim gave no response and instead fell backwards onto his bed slowly. He laid their motionless for a long moment before rising with new determination.
"I'm going to do it Bones….I'm going to get a kiss from Spock at midnight if it kills me."
Bones shook his head lightly and moved to stand in the doorway of Jim's corridors for a moment longer.
"I'll be sure to be on standby in case the Hobgoblin does decide to try and kill you Jim. Or molest you. Lord knows you're bound to induce one or the other, if not both."
"Bones!" Jim called after his best friend, his screams being heard all the way down the hall.
I've been meaning to do a New Years fic for ages, but I couldn't pick a pairing I wanted to write it about, but my reason bout with Spirk made me write this. I'm so into this pairing right now it's not even funny! I hope you all like chapter 1 and will review a bit before I post the next chapter!
Yours truly,
