Wow I reread this first chapter and I have no idea why any of you read it, let alone commented. The writing on the original is just so bad. I thought of deleting the whole thing, but maybe some of you like it for nostalgia, so I may just go through and fix errors or plot holes instead. Edited May 23, 2020.
I slumped down against a tree, exhausted from my relentless searching. I've been searching for any clues on Naraku's location, moving almost non stop but unfortunately there have been no signs of the bastard anywhere. A nap may do me some good, since I'm so tired I wouldn't be able to fight even if the half demon were right in front of me. It didn't take long at all for my eyes lids to feel heavy but before falling asleep I picked up on some familiar scents. 'Inuyasha's group...They may have heard something.' The thought pushed me to move on despite not resting long, and that I'd be safer sleeping in their camp then on my own. Unfortunately, a breeze blew in the smell of Koga, Ginta, and Hakkaku coming closer, which also meant they were moving closer to the group, or more specifically Koga was moving toward Kagome. The thought of listening to the two argue with one another is nearly enough to turn me away from the lot of them. Honestly, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that Kagome doesn't like it when they fight, and that she has a crush on Inuyasha. Seeing how obliviously Koga pines over Kagome and how uncomfortable she gets makes me uncomfortable. I don't know how Sango and Miroku deal with watching that mess as often as they surely do.
I traveled by the river, moving against the current and deeper into the forest. As I got closer I distinctly detected a hint of unfamiliar human and an imp. Strangely the scent of wolves was close by, except for Koga. What could those wolf demons possibly want with a human girl? I'm pretty sure they don't eat humans anymore, since it would upset Kagome. Once I caught up I growled involuntarily, that girl is terrified and trying to hide behind the imp that's smaller than her. If it didn't anger me so much it might have been funny. "Ginta, Hakkaku, don't you two have anything better to do then scare a little girl?" I chided the two, utterly disappointed in them.
Despite my words the imp seemed even more unsettled than before, however that didn't stop him from yelling, "You there, wolves! Leave this area immediantly!" I mean he clearly isn't paying attention to what I'm saying, but he is just trying to protect that child so I can't say it bothers me too much.
"Why should we?" Ginta countered. "Besides, who do you think you're talking to?"
Of course the two couldn't resist gloating. "We're the right and left hand men of Koga, the young leader of the wolf demon tribe! I'm Hakkaku, the shrewd one!" Hakkaku blurted out smuggly.
"I'm Ginta, I've got dimples!" ...Really? Just...wow, that was stupid.
"Hahahaha, you must have heard of us!" They shouted together.
"Nope, never heard of you." The imp deadpanned, deflating the wolf boy's egos.
"What!?" Then the two proceeded to dramatically drop to the ground. The theatrics they put on are a bit much for me.
"Cower in fear, mangy wolves! It has been centuries since I began serving Lord Sesshomaru! Crossed through three thousand worlds have I! His most loyal follower, I answer to the name Jaken!" The imp screeched, probably more annoyingly than either Ginta or Hakkaku. An impressive feat to say the least.
"Oh boy, what a bragger." Hakkaku criticized.
'You were just doing the same thing, you hypocrite.' I thought. 'This is getting irritating. I'm most certainly going to put an end to this whole affair if it is not resolved soon.' Okay, I admit that I don't have the most patience in the world, and my lack of rest is certainly not helping.
"We've never heard of you or this 'Sesshomaru'!" Ginta continued.
"How dare you insult my lord!" Jaken yelled, and once again his too high voice hurt my sensitive ears, while raising his staff over his head.
"We'll take you on if it's a fight you're looking for!" Hakkaku yelled, preparing himself. A man walked out of the forest next to Jaken. I almost shuddered from the demonic power this demon had, even without trying. Clearly we were no much for a guy like this, but something about him seemed so familiar. Then it clicked for me, he not only looked somewhat Inuyasha, he also smelled similar. I haven't heard much about Inuyasha's family, but I do know his father is dead, so either a sibling, uncle, or cousin. That isn't very comforting, since Inuyasha is really strong and he's only half demon.
I need to deescalate this now before it turns into a fight. Plus that girl still looks scared, who would be afraid of wolves with someone that powerful protecting her? Something bad must have happened to the poor thing. Mind made up, I pushed through the wolves, straight up to the boys and grabbed them by the ears. "I don't know why the hell you two are picking fights with defenseless kids and little imps, but you'd better stop before I actually rip your ears off!" I released the pair and watched, unimpressed, as they started running off. This felt somehow very awkward, being left alone with this trio, so I started to leave as well when the girl came out from behind her guardian.
"Thank you for scaring away the wolves miss." She gave me this huge smile and I swear I practically melted at how adorable she is.
I smiled as hard my cheeks hurt a little. Hopefully it didn't scare her, but I just cant help myself. How anyone could look at such a cute kid and be angry is beyond me. "Aww, you're welcome."
"Rin, weren't you going to get some fish?" The demon asked. I'm not sure what to make of this guy. Clearly he cared enough about Rin to keep her safe from the wolves, but he sounds so...cold when speaking to her. Whatever, this really isn't any of my concern. I turn to leave, again, but I don't get much further than before when Rin stops me.
"Wait!" Rin stood there, looking down at her feet as she spoke. "Um, I'm not that good at catching fish. Can you help?"
"Um, I don't know about that," I looked at the dog demon and found him looking at me. If I thought his tone had been cold before, his face is practically frigid now. Yeah, that's terrifying, yet weirdly cute that he'd get upset that I refused Rin. "I'm trying to catch up with some friends."
"Oh," God if that sad expression of hers didn't about do me in. Why do I have a have such a soft spot for kids?
"You know what, sure. They aren't far, I'm sure I can catch them after they make camp for the night." I grinned at how quickly she bounced back, laughing as she rolled up her kimono and ran into the river. I chuckle and don't bother taking off my boots. Kagome had brought them to me from her time, for something she called Christmas, and they were made of some special material that didn't let the water in. I didn't really understand the background of it all when she tried to explain, but I appreciate the gift none the less.
Together Rin and I caught about five fish, more than enough for her dinner. While I enjoyed her company, I admit I could't fully relax. The mysterious demon left my sight not long before we started fishing, but he stayed close by in the trees somewhere. He is very hard to smell or sense and if I hadn't been close by I would never have known he was here. Whenever I finally find Inuyasha I'll ask him about his mysterious relative.
Jaken looked between his lord and Rin with concern. Sesshomaru didn't look as pleased about a stranger so close to Rin, but allowed the unknown woman to fish iin the river with Rin while he waited in the shadows. "My Lord," Jaken started, already stuttering due to nerves at the beating he may receive for being so disrespectful. "Are you certain it was wise to let that woman so close to Rin?"
The lord huffed irritably and answered, but not before putting his foot on Jaken's head, grinding his face into the dirt. "Do not question my choices again, Jaken, or I'll kill you."
"Yes, my lord. Thank you my Lord!" The imp bowed to his master once the foot was removed from his head. He should have known better than to question Sesshomaru's decision, even if he didn't understand his lord's reasoning.
