Vicarious

A/N: Purple-Cat-Princess's prize from my Subtle Holix contest at Providence Playground. She asked for a Caliday break-up fic. Probably not what she was expecting, but oh well.
Disclaimer: Generator Rex belongs to Man of Action.
At Providence, it was next to impossible to have much privacy. Those who lived on base had the most trouble. It was a simple fact of life that having so many people in a secluded area literally three hours by car from anywhere made it difficult for two people to get together and have some time alone.
This was why they always met in The Hole.
It all started when she'd been going to visit her sister again, this particular time finding someone else had come to see her sibling as well. To be honest, it shouldn't have come as a surprise. Back when she'd been a lowly assistant, her sister had come to visit her fairly frequently. During one of these visits, the younger Holiday sister had met a mercenary man by the name of Callan. Holiday herself had disapproved—she hadn't known what a good man Callan really was back then—but had done little to stop the relationship aside from a chat with the blond. Callan, however, had only been amused when the doctor told him in no uncertain terms that should he hurt her sister, she'd perform a molecular dissection to study deactivated nanites using him as the guinea pig.
Life, as it always did, moved on. They found Rex, she replaced Fell as the head of Providence's scientists, and he moved up in the ranks to become a captain. Her sister came over more and more often, usually to see Callan since Holiday had been kept busy with Rex who, at that time, had been top secret. When he had spare time, Callan would leave base to visit the younger sibling and take her places. Despite her early dislike of the blond, Holiday had willingly given him her blessing when he'd told her he was planning to ask the younger sibling to marry him.
Things didn't go as planned. The younger Holiday had gone EVO in the middle of the date he'd planned to pop the question. It was her sister that gave him the scar over his eye.
Up until that chance meeting, Holiday hadn't even imagined that she wasn't her sister's only visitor. She felt touched that her almost brother-in-law still cared about her sibling, and she welcomed him on these visits of hers. It seemed to help her sister, but it was probably just wishful thinking on her part.
No one ever found out about the relationship they started literally in the middle of headquarters.
Though it was riskier, they always stayed within the outer chamber of The Hole when they'd kiss, touch, and on very rare occasions have sex. After all, neither wanted her sister to see and think that Callan was cheating on her because, in reality, he wasn't. He didn't see the older Holiday sibling just as Holiday didn't see him during these moments of passion. Both needed to either continue (in Callan's case) or create (in Holiday's) the relationship they truly desired.
So when they finally broke up, it was as mutual a decision as the start.
After all, they'd never been seeing each other anyway.
