The lieutenant had become his new favorite toy. She had a delightfully well-honed sense of paranoia, and enough influence over the Flame Alchemist to make things difficult for the Fullmetal Pipsqueak and his tincan brother if she so chose. Or so felt the need.
Envy made sure she felt the need.
Phone calls, notes, 'gifts' left on her doorstep, little things to make sure she knew she was being watched, being followed. And all things that would make it look like it was Ed, or someone connected to the brat. Oh, sure, she knew it was ludicrous. That wasn't in Ed's character to do, after all.
But the fear was still becoming associated with the brat. That's all Envy needed.
"Lieutenant Hawkeye?"
She turned, papers tucked neatly under her arm, and Envy could see the barely-concealed wariness, the borderline fear in her eyes as she met his intense golden eyes. Edward's eyes. Envy smiled. "Hey, can you take this to the Colonel? I don't wanna go talk to that bastard right now. Too much work to do, and Al's waiting for me." Smooth as silk, the stolen voice, inflections, everything were easy to steal, easy to mimic. They were old and familiar to him, an easy old skin to slip back into.
Hawkeye's expression didn't relax, and her smile was as warm as carved marble. A mask she was used to holding, but one that was slipping. Envy could read people too well to be fooled by that. She held out her hand for it. "You know you'll have to report in to his office eventually, Edward."
"Yeah, well..." Envy trailed off, stepping over to her, then as quick as a serpent striking a man's heel, he moved up into her space, too close for her to breathe, to move away, to do anything but exactly what he wanted her to do. He was too tall, something that she was bound to realize far later, the shifting heights as smooth as his movements had been. He refused to look up at her for this. "Didn't I warn you to never trust gold eyes like the hawk's eyes, Lieutenant?"
Her eyes widened and she tried to step back, nearly lost her grip on the papers under her arm, one hand starting to reach for her gun. "E-edward, wh-"
Before she could finish the question, his lips brushed against hers, feather-light and mockingly-cruel, and he smiled, teeth bared as he stepped back. "See you around, Lieutenant," he whispered before stepping back around a corner and out of sight.
"Edward!" By the time she got around the corner to try to stop 'Edward', Envy had already shifted forms, another soldier heading down the halls of East HQ.
