A/N. This is a sort-of post ep for S7E14 "Smooth Criminal." After Jo and Mac talk about Hawkes and his 'friend' what if Mac started to notice the same body language directed at him?

Mac sat at his desk, staring blankly out of the window. As nice as Jo was to be around, she was starting to get to him. Her little speech on people watching had opened his eyes to something he never thought he'd see; and Mac had no idea what to do about it.

Can't you see it? Evaluate the evidence.

Mac closed his eyes and thought over the last week. Jo's voice had been running through his head whenever he was close to him. Now, Mac was well aware he wasn't interacting with a woman, but apparently these things were universal.

She arches her back a little when she talks

Mac had almost missed it that first day. The way he arched towards Mac when he talked. He rocked back on his heels; pushing himself onto tippy toes for a just a second. Mac had always figured it was nervousness, but maybe it was something more. Sometimes he looked up through his lashes, and Mac could almost feel his heart stuttering.

Nervously touching her neckline

His hands were never still for long; this was known by everyone. But when he talked to Mac, those hands spent a lot of time at his neck. He touched his throat, as if it were a comfort. He scratched the back of his neck nervously when he was explaining something or asking a question. It seemed even scratching his beard was something he only did around Mac. It all spoke of unease, and Mac had always assumed it was because of Adam's history with authority figures. He'd never dreamed it could have a deeper meaning.

Shifting her hair behind her ear

His hair wasn't long enough to really put behind his ear, but Mac noticed he touched it a lot when they were close. He'd run his hand through the hair at his temple, mess up the back a little just to smooth it down again. Now that Mac really thought about it, he remembered the affect these things had on him. If Mac didn't know better, he'd say he was being seduced. The cute awkwardness always reared his protective instinct, and the subtle looks just made him wish circumstances were different. It was then that a thought hit him; things could be different. Mac could change the circumstances. Standing sharply, Mac walked to the door. He stopped there; really thinking this through. Could he go the distance? Mac knew this could never be a casual thing, and if he chose to take this step, the consequences were far reaching. Mac looked up, and saw Adam on his way to the office. That did it; there was no choice to make. As soon as Adam got to the door, Mac opened it and pulled him in. Adam looked shocked, maybe a little scared as Mac pulled the younger man closer. Their faces were mere inches apart, and Mac knew this would be the last chance he had to talk.

"Did I get it right?" He asked softly, smiling a little when Adam's eyes closed at his voice. "I followed the evidence. Am I wrong here?" Adam opened his eyes, offering Mac a soft smile.

"You're not wrong." That was all Adam had a chance to say, as Mac pressed into him and their lips met. The kiss was slow and searching, and by the end both men were short of breath for reasons other than the physical activity. With a gentle smile, Mac pulled away long enough to retrieve his coat. After shrugging it on, Mac offered Adam his hand. Adam took it with a smile, understanding completely. They were going home. Together.

The End.
