Doctor Who: The Perfect Fit

by: domina tempore (formerly "jewel of athos")

Summary: It is said that some lives are linked across time. Connected. Martha Jones and Mickey Smith are two such lives.

Author's Note: Not *quite* sure where this came from. Ever since I saw End of Time, I've loved the thought of Martha and Mickey, and recently I've been looking for something to write about them. This piece randomly popped into my mind at about three in the morning. It's just a little piece, but I'd like to do more with these two sometime.

For Martha and Mickey, there was no question that they were meant to be.

It hadn't necessarily been a conscious recognition. There had been no great epiphany to lead them to that decision; it was hardly love at first sight. In fact, a good deal of their early friendship was spent arguing. But it was the good kind of arguing; comfortable, fun banter between friends who know that they don't need to hold back; friends who trust each other completely. They had no need to agree, because they knew that they would be accepted no matter the argument. It was the purest form of friendship.

And then banter became jokes, and jokes became discussion, and discussion became earnest. When honesty finally gave way to confession, there was no one in the world who understood one better than the other.

When Martha's fiancé broke their engagement suddenly, it was Mickey who was there for her. It wasn't to pity her or to give meaningless advice, but simply to be there. He understood what it was to be abandoned in that way; it was no as long ago as it felt to him that Rose had chosen the Doctor over him. He knew that the pain never really left, no matter how you tried to move on. In return, Martha was there for him when he longed for Pete's world and the family he had left behind there. He had long since moved past his love for Rose, but her family had become his; especially Jackie. It was hard for him to go back to living in a world without the one person who had always been there for him.

When they realized that they loved each other, it didn't come as a surprise to them; they just knew. They matched. Two lives irrevocably changed by the Doctor and punctuated by loss. For Martha it was the Doctor and her fiancé, and for Mickey, the Tyler family. They had both seen the stars and chosen to leave them, and they fit. A pair of unlikely lovers drawn through time and space to be together, all because of a madman and a blue box and a blonde child. They had both in some way been torn to shreds by Rose, and this too had strengthened the inevitable bond between them. There was no doubt about what would come next.

As they stood at the altar, and Mickey kissed his new bride's lips for the first time, he found to his surprise that he was grateful for his tragedy with Rose. After believing for so long that she would be his end, he had realized that this was never what she was meant to be. She was merely a stepping stone, paving the path for both he and Martha that had led them right here, to this moment. Yes, she had caused them pain; but without that pain he would have missed out on something beautiful. He couldn't regret the very thing that had led him to where he really belonged. He was hesitant to use the word 'destiny', but he was at a loss for a better description. How could this be anything less than fate?

For Martha and Mickey, who had seen the world and traveled the stars, there was no place that they could call home that was not with each other.

A/N: I'm still feeling them out; but I'm actually rather pleased with this. For myself, at least, I achieved the right mood. I hope you enjoyed! :D
