After being given some privacy, they sat silently for almost two hours, not knowing what to say or do. Ilana's face was red and puffy and Lance's eyes kept tearing up before he'd turn away from the princess and casually rub at them. He didn't want to make this any worse for her.
"...L-Lance..." she spoke up, finally, not sure what to say. "What...what are we going to do?"
Lance frowned and glared at the floor. It was true; not only had they lost their closest companion, but now they were defenseless against the mutraddi. At the rate they were going, Ilana and Lance were going to die along with Octus. "I-I'm not sure. But we'll figure it out! We always figure it out..." He tried to smile at the girl, who suddenly burst into another fit of tears.
"No! No we didn't...Octus did!" she sobbed. Trying not to make any loud noises, she brought her knees up to her chest and put her head down, body wracking from the crying and sobbing.
Lance stood up and walked over to her, biting his lip at how much he wanted to join her. But he didn't cry - especially not around the one he's supposed to protect. It's his job to be the strong one; both physically and emotionally. He sat down and wrapped his arms around her shoulders, at which point she temporarily stopped sobbing and relaxed. The thought of a comforting pair of arms, however, brought back more memories of how well Octus took care of them throughout the past year, and she started crying again.
Lance held her tighter, not sure what else to do in that situation. He wished Octus were around to give him advice like usual.
But he wasn't. And from the looks of it, he never would be again. If only he'd been stronger! If only he'd been able to keep Octus away! That one slip-up of his and Octus' life is taken away. It was his fault. His fault Octus is dead and Ilana is in danger. His fault-
"Lance...I-I know what you're thinking, and it's not," she managed to say through her sobs. Without realizing it, Lance had let go of Ilana and put a hand to his forehead menacingly. "It's not...your fault. Don't blame yourself, Lance..p-please don't..."
Lance stared back at her. Even with tears streaming down her red face she was still being rational. He respected that. "Ilana, we're going to need help." He said suddenly, trying to avoid the primary subject and move on to the next most important: Ilana's safety.
"From who?" she asked quietly. "Solomon and G3?"
Lance grimaced, then nodded. "It's our only hope to survive..."
"Maybe..." she looked down at the floor. "Just maybe they have the technology to...to get us home. Instead of trying to help us fight more mutraddi and hurt innocent people and risk...getting hurt..., we could just go home!"
Lance gave her the most pitiful look in the world for a few seconds, before turning away and standing up. He brushed off his pants and sighed. "Yeah...we should. We should go home."
