Chapter 32: Libraries in the Jungle

After returning Mel and Dan home Davis, Jun, and Takuya changed into some new clothes, and rejoined the others at Gennai's place. It had taken a while to convince the worried parents to let Davis go, but they understood the urgency of the matter. Neither liked it, but consented after learning that the entire group was going, including Joe, who had promised to keep an eye on Davis and Takuya's conditions.

When everyone was gathered once more, (including Mimi and Michael, who had been spending the weekend with Sora and so that they could be there with the group for Davis,) they gate jumped to the Mazatlan Jungle and met up with Jaime and the South American DigiDestined again. Gennai came with them this time to help with the language barriers that came up when all they could communicate in was English, which was a secondary language for both groups. Introductions were made again for all of those who hadn't come to the jungle before and then they all headed to the sacred ground Ken and Jaime's group had searched last time.

Everyone was in awe of the temple. When they came to the shrine, JP confirmed Mokuseimon's claim that power was emitting from the shrine - its altar specifically. While most pondered what this could mean, asking the native digital guide and DigiDestined about the shrine's significance in their culture, Yolei and Cody seemed drawn to the altar. The ground trembled slightly at their approach, though neither felt anything, but it sure caught everyone else's attention.

Then a light shone from within the shrine's altar and Davis felt himself being drawn closer as well. Ken soon followed. Something was calling out to them.

"What's going on?!" Kari cried as she watched her friends stand around the altar of the shrine, one on each side.

Davis took on a vacant expression that the Warrior DigiDestined had become more than familiar with since their reinstatement as DigiDestined. He was in a trance, pulling out a small square chip that the Odaiba DigiDestined recognized as a crest. All eyes were on the youngest Motomiya as he placed the crest in the middle of the alter. For a moment nothing happened, but then the crest sank into the altar and the glowing stopped, light fading, but revealed that the plain stone altar was now gold. The ground began to tremble again, harder this time, but none of the four surrounding the altar within the shrine moved until they appeared to sink through the floor. Only they weren't going through the floor, the floor itself was descending like an elevator. Kari and TK moved then, racing towards their friends, the others not far behind, staring in awe as stairs began for form for them to follow, spiraling down along the edges of the hole where the altar had sunk straight down.

When they reached the bottom of the steps, Davis, Ken, Yolei and Cody were no longer standing around the altar, but heading down a long passageway that had appeared. The others followed until the long corridor ended in a large open cavern with a flat wall opposite them. The four DigiDestined in a trance took out and lifted their digivices up and beams of colored light hit the wall. Davis' golden light hit a section of wall that illuminated with his Crest of Miracles. Ken's purple light lit up his Crest of Kindness on the wall. Yolei's digivice was emitting a bright orangish-pink colored light on a symbol that looked like a swirl of fire. Cody's white light was shining on a six pointed star within a circle.

Kari had the sudden urge to join them and stepped forward with TK to also point their digivices at the wall, beams of pink and yellow-green light hitting their Crests of Hope and Light. One by one the other Odaiba DigiDestined stepped forward to point their digivices at the walls until orange Courage, blue Friendship, red Love, green Sincerity, purple Knowledge, and gray Reliability were shining brightly with the other six crests. 12 Crests of Virtue shone brightly until they appeared to peel off the wall and drift down the the DigiDestined they connected to, changing the color of their Digivices until it matched their crest.

"Well that was cool," Takuya muttered from where he was leaning against the wall next to the entrance to the chamber. He was tired and taking the chance to rest. He was sure that Davis was feeling the strain as well. They weren't nearly recovered enough to be out and about, but both knew that they had no time to spare if they were going to prepare for Millenniummon's return.

It seemed that after the light show, the four that had been entranced were back to normal again, all staring down at their digivices that were lit up with the symbol of their crest.

"Determination," Yolei muttered. "This is the Crest of Determination."

"And mine is Honor," said Cody.

"Those are perfect for you two," Kari said, smiling brightly. "Congratulations on finding your crests."

"Thank the powers that be that they were all here," Tai laughed.

"Seems a little too convenient, don't you think?" Matt asked.

"Perhaps," Izzi agreed, "but we haven't been able to communicate with the Sovereign in a long time. Perhaps this was the only way they could intervene on our behalf. They were the ones that held the power of our crests, after we gave them up to help seal the protective barrier between our worlds."

"Maybe," Joe said. "Seems a bit strange to me though, that they'd put the crests in a sector of the Digital World that we wouldn't normally access, however. We wouldn't have come here if we weren't seeking clues to find Wisemon. And it was Mokuseimon who suggested we return here because of the power emitting from the shrine altar here."

"True," Mimi said. "If it weren't for our new Shibuya friends we would have just passed this location by because there wasn't anything indicating that the powers of all of our crests were kept here."

"But that would mean that the Sovereign know more about what's going on," Takuya interjected. "I don't know about Koji, Koichi, Zoe, Tommy or JP, but I've always found it a bit odd that you guys have always had Gennai, his people and the Sovereign, when back in our day, we had the spirits of the Legendary Warriors, Lady Ophanimon, and Lords Seraphimon and Cherubimon to watch over the Digital World. At what point in the Digital World's history did the switch happen?"

"What are you getting at, Taky?" JP asked.

"Ophanimon, Seraphimon and Cherubimon were all still around in spite of our fight against Millenniummon and the end of the Digital World," Takuya reasoned. "They had to have been alive to restore life to the Digital World after our final battle, otherwise the Digital World wouldn't be here. Only they had the power to rebuild the Digital World."

"But rebuilding the Digital World takes a lot of time and energy," Koji mused.

"An enormous amount of power that would be taxing even for the three of them," Koichi added. "So much, I dare say, that they'd have had to exhaust themselves to the point of regeneration."

"But they would have known that and created deities to rule in their stead to watch over the progression of the new Digital World while they waited to be reborn," Takuya picked up.

"The Sovereign," Tommy said, eyes wide.

"Who created Gennai and his people, much like Lady Ophanimon and Lords Seraphimon and Cherubimon who appointed the ten Legendary Warriors as protectors," Zoe piped up.

"But that still doesn't connect to what you were saying about the Sovereign knowing about what's happening now even though they're not around," JP pointed out, looking at Takuya.

"How does anybody learn about the past?" Takuya asked.

"History books," Tommy said.

"Records and documentations," Yutaka added.

"Oral Traditions," Jun suggested.

"And who do we figure could possibly possess this information, undoubtedly entrusted to them by Ophanimon, Seraphimon and Cherubimon?" Takuya prodded.

"The Wisemon," Izzi sighed. "The question is, how do we find them?"

"If I may," Catalina spoke up, looking a touch unsure as she spoke in her heavy accented English. Gennai and Jaime were nodding encouragingly at her to continue. Takuya figured that the digital men had been translating for her and the other South American DigiDestined the whole time the Japanese DigiDestined were talking. "You look for Wisemon, yes? We search temples and sacred areas in Mazatlan, but no find what you look for."

"What are you suggesting?" Izzi asked.

"Wisemon are like… como se dice… how you say… librarian? Why not look in library?"

"Why not?" Ken mused, after translating for those in his group who didn't speak English. Then he switched back to English. "Catalina is right. If sacred ancient sites haven't panned out, why not try a library? Are there any here in Mazatlan Jungle?"

Mateo and Catalina nodded, confirming that there were two. Pedro and Edwardo also suggested checking a Digimon city on the edge of the jungle where there was apparently a large city hall type building where all sorts of records were kept. The two Brazilian boys had been there before helping a Datamon transfer his files.

The DigiDestined then split into three groups once more. Sora, Jun, Kari, Mimi, Yolei, Zoe, Catalina, Isabella, Maria and Sofía left to investigate an old library Catalina was familiar with in the north eastern part of the jungle. Gennai, Joe, Izzi, TK, Cody, Michael, JP, Tommy, Yutaka, Mateo, Jorge and Diego went to the second library in a tree house village in the southern part of the jungle. That left Tai, Matt, Ken, Jaime, Takuya, Koji, Koichi, Mokuseimon, Pedro, Marcos, and Eduardo to depart for the city on the western most edge of the Mazatlan jungle.

The girls arrived at their destination with no problem. The library was located in a structure that reminded Mimi of the Temple of the Digivice back on File Island, but instead of a maze inside, it was full of aisles upon aisles of bookshelves. The head librarian was a small rooster Digimon called Sinduramon. Several Swanmon also worked there as librarians and were more than happy to help the girls with their search.

They spent the next several hours looking up texts for any mention of Wisemon, though there was very little information that they didn't already know to work with. Maria was the one that found a helpful text with information on the ancient citadel that the Wisemon were supposed to live in. Catalina was able to get Sinduramon to agree to their request for a copy of the text to be made for the Japanese DigiDestined to take back with them to translate.

Gennai and Izzi's group had about the same luck. The treehouse village they'd arrived at was nestled up in the tops of the kapok trees that grew thick and numerous in the southern parts of the jungle. Izzi had been the one to identify the trees and talked about how unlikely they were likely to grow so close together in their world, but that was the Digital World for you. Mateo joked that this part of Mazatlan was probably formed by all the National Geographic and Save the Rainforest webpages on the internet.

Unsurprisingly, most of the village's population was avian Digimon. There were flocks of Biyomon, Hawkmon, and other bird Digimon about, but the village library was run by a Holy Angemon, who looked a lot like MagnaAngemon if MagnaAngemon dressed in all white and silver and looked more like a priest instead of an angelic knight. He also only had one pair of large angel wings instead of the eight smaller wings MagnaAngemon had. There were several other angel Digimon that ran the library, though JP and Tommy were understandably wary of a couple of Lucemon they saw flying around with an Angewomon and Angemon.

After searching for hours they had found no mention of Wisemon, though Gennai claimed to have found several texts full of information he'd found enlightening, but wasn't willing to share his finds until he'd done more research first.

Davis and his group were in the City Hall building that Pedro and Eduardo had recommended. The building was huge and run by another Holy Angemon, like the one in Kapok Tree Village. Only this Holy Angemon worked alone with the records kept in City Hall. Security was maintained by patrols of Valkyrimon led by Slash Angemon, Holy Angemon's twin brother. Together, the twin angel brothers not only ran and protected City Hall, but the entire city as well.

Slash Angemon had wanted to turn the DigiDestined out, despite Jaime doing a great job trying to get accross the necessity of finding information on the Wisemon, but it was Holy Angemon that had convinced his brother to allow the DigiDestined to search their records, on the condition that Holy Angemon would personally supervise what records the DigiDestined went through. Slash Angemon agreed upon the condition that they take a pair of Valkyrimon with them.

With Holy Angemon's help, the DigiDestined found record of a Wisemon who'd once been the head records keeper in the area before the city they were in today formed. Jaime was allowed to make copies of those records and thanked the angel Digimon for his help.

When everyone had exhausted every plausible resource they could search that afternoon, the Japanese DigiDestined thanked their new South American friends for their help and gate jumped back to Gennai's place in File Island's Factory to compare notes. Mimi and Michael had to leave and return home to America, however, so they weren't part of the discussion of trying to figure out where to search next.

"We didn't really find anything in our library," Izzi admitted. "There was no record of Wisemon there, though there were some mentions of a Holy Land of some sort. The Holy Angemon in charge wasn't very forthcoming on information related to that, however."

"Well we had better luck," Sora reported. "Maria found mention of Wisemon in an old text. According to Catalina, there were several Wisemon that lived in Mazatlan, but a dark power came from the south and began a vicious war of some kind. The Wisemon began to disappear around then."

"Maybe that's why we couldn't find mention of the Wisemon," JP mused. "If the south was struck first, then it's only natural that the Wisemon would move out of that area, and take their records with them. I'm betting that the Kapok Tree Village is a relatively new settlement in comparison to the other two areas."

"Sounds plausible What about you, Tai? What did your group find?" Izzi asked.

"We found records of the Wisemon that lived in that area, actually," Tai said, grinning. "The Holy Angemon and Slash Angemon brothers that protect the city are also keepers of the records there. We were lucky that Holy Angemon was a really nice guy, because even with Jaime, I don't think we would have gotten into the record rooms at all if we were only dealing with Slash Angemon."

"Any clues as to where the Wisemon headed after leaving the area?" Izzi asked.

"Not really," Koji said. "Though we did find evidence of this war Sora mentioned. I think there was more in the records, but Holy Angemon wasn't volunteering the information. He knew more than what he was telling us."

"At least he was willing to give you some information," Yutaka said. "The Holy Angemon we met didn't really help us at all."

"Well, think about it from their perspective," Ken spoke up. "We're looking into what is undoubtably a very sensitive subject. Sure, our intentions are good, but the Holy Angemon have been entrusted with this information for who knows how long. It appears that they've taken it upon themselves to take up the Wisemon's jobs and what we're looking into is probably something they don't want widely known. Perhaps it is their way of protecting the Wisemon. The records we were allowed to look at, made it seem like Holy Angemon was once very close to the Wisemon that had lived in the area. I bet Slash Angemon ordered the Valkyrimon that accompanied us to keep an eye out for any suspicious behavior on our part."

"So they don't trust us," Takuya sighed. "Understandable. But perhaps we have enough information to at least start looking."

"Mokuseimon and I'll go through the information we've all brought back and will let you know if we find any leads," Gennai promised. "You all should go home and relax. Enjoy these quiet moments while they last."

Everyone agreed and one by one headed back home. Jun and Davis were a little hesitant to leave, though, because Takuya was staying behind.

"Are you sure?" Davis asked.

"Yeah," Takuya said, smiling tiredly. "It's not my home, it's yours. I'm a stranger to Mel and Dan, and I know that I might be "alive" again, so to speak, but my body is a digitally made one. Besides, I want to try and get to know Mokuseimon better. Maybe see if I can jog some of his memories as Shinya, you know?"

"Alright," Jun said, smiling. "Take care, Takuya. We'll see you soon."

They both hugged Takuya goodbye and headed back home.

Davis still felt strange as he lay in bed without Takuya's presence and voice in his head. It felt a little lonelier without his cousin, and without Flaremon running about with Tamamon and the DemiVeemon. Of course, it a little strange now that his parents knew what was going on and that the Digimon were allowed to have free reign of the apartment now that they weren't trying to hide and remain a secret. That was a little nice though. It had been hard keeping things secret from his parents. The whole day had felt surreal, but he knew that he'd get used to it. He'd have to. Life had changed once again for him and there was no going back to the way things once were.

Looks like the DigiDestined have run into a dead end, but the Odaiba DigiDestined have their crests now! What will Hawkmon and Armadillomon's Ultimate and Mega levels be like? I guess we'll just have to wait and find out next time on Digimon: Digital Monsters!

Aaand we had more filler. Wee! But at least something progressive happened, right? So what do you guys think of Yolei and Cody's crests: Determination and Honor? I thought really hard about this when I was figuring out virtues for Ultimate Gathering. I think it suits them, so I hope you do too. I'm not quite happy with this chapter, but I did basically just finish writing it within the last hour... I think this is my most rushed chapter, but I don't think I'd be any happier with it even if I'd given myself a week to write it. I have an idea of what I want to happen a few chapters from now, I just have been struggling to figure out how to get to that point, hence all the filler chapters thus far. I basically go into a chapter saying, I want them to get to this point by the end, but finding the crests only filled four pages so... library scavenger hunt!

Some of you might recognize Slash Angemon from Digimon Fusion/Xros Wars, but I doubt more than a few of you recognized Holy Angemon. Yes, technically Holy Angemon is MagnaAngemon's name in the Japanese version, but the way I described Holy Angemon is how he appears in the V-Tamer manga, which stars Tai Yagami. I happened to have read it back in February on a whim and found that I really liked the manga. I won't lie, it was partially what inspired me to write my new Tai-centric fic. That's what happens when I finish rewatching Xros Wars, Digimon Tri, and read V-Tamer all in the same month. I'm actually considering taking another shot at my Light in the Place of Courage fic, rewriting solo this time with V-Tamer in mind. What do you guys think? Should I?
