For Rinnala. You know why.
His head was fuzzy as he lifted it off the floor. How had he gotten on the floor? He blinked his eyes open and looked around. Faces swam into view. Howard, Raj, Amy, Leonard. Emotions ranged across their features. Worry and concern on Amy and Leonard. Confusion on Raj. And Howard looked angry. It was probably to do with the Amy refusing to do 'whatever she did to Sheldon to give him the power of the Gods'.
Sheldon pulled himself to his feet.
"Are you okay?" Amy asked, holding onto his arm to keep him steady. Leonard stood in front of him, arms crossed across his chest.
"Sheldon? You look like you're going to be sick. How do you feel?"
Sheldon took a deep breath, trying to shut out Raj and Howard arguing, and Amy and Leonards concerned voices. He focused on Amy, looking at her for a long time.
"Sheldon." Amy finally said. "I just told you that I really liked watching Captain Kirk defeat the Ewoks in Battlestar Gllactica last night with my mind." Sheldon pulled his arm from her with a frown.
"Amy Farrah Fowler, everyone knows that Captain Kirk is from the original era Star Trek, while Ewoks are from Star Wars, neither of which have-" He stopped suddenly.
"There it is." Leonard said with a sigh.
"I didn't hear you. I didn't hear you in my mind!" Sheldon grabbed Amy's arms and looked into her face. "Try it again, say something to me." Amy focused on Sheldon.
"Anything?" She asked. Sheldon shook his head back and forth vigorously.
"You cured me!" He cried, throwing his arms around Amy in an awkward hug.
"Ugh. This is the most disappointing thing that has ever happened to me. Of all the people..." Howard threw his hands up in the air in disgust as Sheldon let go of Amy.
"I need to see Penny, I need to go now."
"Sheldon, are you sure? Are you positive? Because having a relationship with a girl is different from other relationships." Leonard said, pushing his glasses up his nose.
"If you are referring to the physical-"
"No, I'm not talking about that, although, now that you mention - no, I'm not going there." He shook his head, "I'm talking about being there for someone, Sheldon. I'm talking about the little things that make a good boyfriend."
"Like you would know." Raj muttered. Howard laughed as Leonard glared at them.
"Leonard, I believe your figurative heart to be in the right place, but I alkso know two things to be true. One, that my recent experience has given me the ability and knowledge to make Penny happy and two, that I don't have you explain my feelings to you. So grab your keys, I have to save my relationship with Penny."
Work that day had been especially irritating. Penny dropped her apron on the counter as she pulled a bottle of wine from the fridge and grabbed a glass from the counter that she thought was probably clean. She sighed, dropping onto her sofa and poured herself a glass.
She took a sip and layed her head against the back of the couch.
What had happened? She had fallen for Sheldon! Sheldon of all people! She shook her head and took another sip.
He was so nice to her, kind and understanding and always knowing what to say. She scoffed.
Of course he knew what to say, he was READING HER MIND. How could she have been so stupid?
But then... there were times when she was sure he couldn't have known when he did something that made her happy. Like the flowers? She had mentioned once about flowers, but she hadn't actively thought about it since that one time months ago.
Was it all a lie? She took another sip and was about to pour some more when a tell tale knock sounded through the apartment.
Knock knock knock. "Penny?" Sheldon spoke quietly.
Knock Knock Knock. "Penny?" He sounded upset.
Knock knock knock. "Penny?" She stood up and pulled the door open.
Sheldon stood there, hands clasped in front of him in that way he did when he was nervous. His eyes grew wide, like he was surprised she had opened up to him.
"Um... hello Penny." He said, looking down at his shoes.
"What Sheldon?" She asked. He looked up at her, nervously meeting her eyes.
"I'm... I'm sorry Penny. I'm sorry for hurting you. I never meant to. When this happened I thought I would conduct an experiment-"
"Is that all I was Sheldon? An experiment?" She cried, tears threatening to fall now, even though she was so angry. Sheldon's eyes grew wider.
"No, no, oh no." He shook his hands in front of him, "That's how it started. I thought I would learn as much as possible, because unlike Howard, I did not see this as a blessing, more an opportunity."
Penny crossed her arms, anger a little deflated with his answer, "Well I guess the world can be thankful it was you and not Howard who wound up with it." Sheldon stepped closer.
"Penny, I did not see it as a blessing at first... but now I do. Because it helped me to see who you really were. And it helped me to learn what I needed to do to make you happy."
Penny looked up at Sheldon with teary eyes. She started to say something and he cut her off.
"No, just..." He seemed to fight within himself for the right thing to say, "I didn't mean to hurt you. I can see now how it happened, but at the time, I didn't realize. I'm sorry. My feelings for you were not borne of my ability to read your mind. That helped, but it is not the only reason, and I don't know how to convince you of that, but I will do whatever you think necessary to try and show you how much I feel for you."
Penny stood there for a moment, staring up at him. Sheldon was getting worried, when after two minutes she still hadn't said anything, just stared at him.
"Well?" Penny asked. Sheldon frowned.
"Well what? Penny you haven't said anything."
Then realization dawned on Penny's features.
"You can't read my mind." She whispered, eyes still glued to his. He shook his head.
"I had Amy Farrah Fowler take them away." He said. Penny nodded, looking down as she grabbed his hand.
"Well that would explain why you didn't kiss me when I asked you to." She said, looking up at him again with a smile. Sheldon's eyebrows lifted before he leaned down a little stiffly, placing his lips on hers. His eyes were open, looking at her as their lips met. She smiled, and then closed her eyes, drawing him closer.
Before he knew it, it was over and she was dropping his hand and stepping away from him. It felt like a goodbye kiss and he couldn't help but be disappointed. He didn't know if he could feel the way he felt about Penny for anyone else.
"I want you to know that I am still very upset that you would do this and not tell me." She said, crossing her arms in front of her. Sheldon nodded.
"I understand," He said, grasping the strap on his satchel and nodding. This was it. He was going to have to tell his mother. Oh sweet Jesus.
"But-" She said causing Sheldon to look up at her, "I am also willing for you to make it up to me, Moonpie." Sheldon nodded.
"-only Meemaw calls-." He started and then stopped, hardly believing what he was hearing. "Wait. Does that mean you're not..."
She smiled and grabbed his hand, pulling him into her apartment and shutting the door behind them.
Sheldon could count the things he loved on one hand. It didn't happen often. But when he did fall in love with something, or someone, he loved loyally and forever.
And Penny didn't have to read his mind to know that.
