"Come on, Lin! Momma said that this place has a zombie that we could hunt! Wouldn't that be great if we could help papa get rid of it for him?" a blonde, little girl said happily as she ran through the courtyard of the Kokuba Academy.
"I'm coming! I'm coming, Rin!" a blonde, little boy, Lin said to his twin sister, trying to catch up to her, "Do you have to go so fast?"
"Hai!" Rin said, "I don't want some stupid head, zombie hunter from Z-loan going and getting our target before us!"
"But can't we at least take a break?!" Lin asked, panting. "I mean, even the zombie hunters of Z-loan can take a break while hunting zombies!"
Rin stopped in her tracks and turned to face her identical twin brother. Lin managed to run up to her and stop to catch his breath. It was a little ironic for a little four-year-old girl and boy to be running around the courtyard of a high school that they don't even go to. Let alone even know what a high school is to begin with.
"Are you done catching your breath yet?" Rin asked, rather annoyed with the fact that her brother had to stop to catch his breath.
Lin shook his head and continued gasping for air. Rin rolled her eyes and turned around to stare at the headstones marking the school's cemetery.
"What do you think happens to people when they die?" Rin asked after a long moment of silence between the two.
"Huh?" Lin said, finally caught his breath and looked up at his sister, "What do you mean by that, Rin?"
"I mean, where do people go when they are taken away by papa?" Rin said, looking towards Lin. "Do they go to some big waiting room like at the doctor's in the sky? Or do they go straight to wherever they are supposed to go? It's a question that I've always wanted to ask but never seem to get the chance to ask papa about. So, I'm asking you for your opinion and compare it to mine."
"I don't really know." Lin said, backing a bit away from Rin. "I've never really thought about that before. All I know is that papa takes them to some place and that's the end of it."
Rin put her hands on her hips and turned to look at the headstones again. Lin let out a sigh of relief when he saw that his twin sister wasn't going to yell or chase him around the courtyard, trying to kill him. Out of the two, Rin was the more violent one than Lin while he was the more gentler one. Lin thought it was strange that he was chosen to train with the Grim Reaper first instead of his sister, given how she was.
"Well, since you've had a long enough break," Rin started, raising her fist into the air, "it's time that we got started hunting down that zombie!"
Lin had completely forgotten that the two of them were zombie hunting at this creepy looking school.
"C-c-can't we have five more minutes of break time?" Lin asked nervously.
"No!" Rin exclaimed. "What if those stupid head zombie hunters of Z-loan get to our target first?! Huh?!" She puffed out her cheeks and pouted. "Besides, there's no way I'm letting them get my plushy money!"
She spun on her heels and began to run down the path again. Lin quickly followed after her.
"Ah! Rin! Wait!" Lin yelled, "Don't leave me here!"
"Ah, come on! Don't be scared of the dark, baby!" Rin said playfully.
"I am not a baby!" Lin exclaimed.
"Yes, you are!" Rin said, looking back at her brother.
"No, I'm not!" Lin said angrily.
"Yes, you ar-" Rin started to say but was cut off by Lin.
"Rin! Look out!" he exclaimed.
"Huh?" Rin said, looking back at the path ahead.
But it was a little too late for that. She had accidentally ran into someone who was going in the opposite direction of them, making her fall back and land on her bum.
"Ow! Oh, I'm sorry! Are you alright?" the person asked, kneeling down in front of Rin to make sure she was fine.
Tears sprang to Rin's eyes, indicating to the person and her brother that she had fallen on the ground hard.
"Lin~!" she cried, "I want to go home~! Forget the zombie~! I want to go home to Momma~!"
"I-I-It's okay, it's okay! O-o-onee-chan is here! Please don't cry!" the stranger said, trying her best to comfort Rin.
The stranger had dull, pink hair and olive green colored eyes. She wore glasses and a school uniform that represented the school they were all currently at. Rin soon stopped her crying and looked at the older girl, sniffling. Lin knelt down beside Rin as well and looked toward the stranger too.
"Oh! Onee-chan forgot to introduce herself!" the girl said, "Onee-chan's name is Kita Michiru."
She got to her feet as Lin helped Rin get to hers. They both looked up at her again and smiled.
"Our names are…" Rin began.
"Lin," Lin said.
"Rin!" Rin said happily.
"Hintari!" they said in unison.
"Nice to meet you," Michiru said, smiling at them.
"Nice to meet you too, onee-chan." the twins said.
Michiru got down to where she was at eye level with them and asked. "Are you two lost? I can probably walk you home, if you want."
"No, we're fine." Rin said, "Momma knows where we are and will come get us when it's about midnight!"
"Midnight?!" Michiru exclaimed, "But you should be getting your rest right now…"
"Don't worry! We take lots of naps during the day so we won't be too tired at night!" Rin said, spinning around a bit.
"Well, not at least till bedtime." Lin said.
"Oh, yeah," Rin said, pouting a bit before perking again. "Well, we better get going! There's something that we gotta do before Momma comes. Come on, Lin!"
Rin ran past Michiru and down the path toward the school building.
"It really was nice meeting you, Kita-san!" Lin said, bowing before running after his sister.
Michiru watched them disappear into the dark before going on her way again.
"Oi, Rin," Lin said as he and his sister peeked over the headstones they were hiding behind. "Why are we hiding behind these headstones?"
"I sense that there's a zombie coming this way." Rin said, looking towards Lin. "It's a minor one but we still could get some money for it."
"Why can't we ever call it quits when we can't find the targeted zombie?" Lin thought, letting out a sigh.
"Well, if you want to go home, then by my guest!" Rin said, looking ahead. "But as for me, I'm staying until I make some plushy money!"
"And leave you here and get hurt? No thanks!" Lin said, turning his head from her in annoyance. "Momma would think that I left you on purpose so you can get hurt."
"Whatever, do what you want. I'm just concern about getting my plushy money!" Rin said.
Lin didn't hear what Rin had said. He was busy trying to figure out what seemed like two teenage boys were talking to someone on the ground about. One of the boys appeared to be holding a weapon of some sort at the person in front of them. Lin couldn't hear what they were saying before Rin grabbed his attention.
"There's the zombie!" she exclaimed.
Lin looked toward where Rin was pointing at and saw a normal looking dog coming out from the trees. But just like what Rin said before, it was a zombie but it wasn't the one that they were looking for.
"Are you really sure that you want to go after this one, Rin?" Lin asked. "Judging by the appearance, it doesn't look like the pay would be enough to buy even one of your plushies."
"You're right," Rin said, folding her arms on top of the headstone and laid her head down on them, "looks like this night was all for nothing."
Lin nodded his head in agreement as they watched the two boys kill the zombie dog and give guidance to it. Rin yawned and started to nod off when someone tapped her shoulder. Both twins perked at this and turned around to see a woman riding on a broomstick. She looked down at them with a smile on her face while the moon shined on her light plum colored hair. The twins immediately knew who the woman was and smiled brightly at her.
"Momma!" they exclaimed, jumping into her arms.
"I see you two had a boring night," she said, holding her children.
"We sure did, Momma!" Rin said, "We couldn't find the zombie target that you told us about and the only zombie we found was a puny one! It had gots to be the most boringest night of my life!"
"Then I guess someone's ready for bed," their mother said, holding them closer before flying off.
Rin didn't say anything more. Instead, she and her brother were sound asleep within their mother's arms. Their mother, Youji looked at them with a smile.
"Sleep tight, my little zombie hunters." she said, holding them even closer.
